Sweeney has now started three of the four games since he was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. With Matt Vierling on the injured list, it seems that the Tigers are going to play Wenceel Perez in right field and shift Javier Baez to center field to allow Sweeney to play regularly at shortstop. The 25-year-old is hitting .208/.277/.301 in 88 games for the Tigers this year and remains off the fantasy radar.

Sweeney returns to the majors for Sunday’s series finale against the Angels with Matt Vierling heading to the shelf with an oblique strain. The 25-year-old infielder is unlikely to play enough to make an impact for fantasy purposes, even in extremely deep AL-only formats.

Sweeney opened the year as Detroit’s starting shortstop, but eventually wound up ceding the role to veteran Javier Báez amid a resurgent campaign. The 25-year-old figures to be in the mix to return at some point later this year, but there isn’t much of a role for him with the Tigers at the moment.

The home run was Sweeney’s fifth of the season. The 25-year-old shortstop hit a go-ahead three-run home run in extra innings off Cade Smith. It was the first home run that came on a fastball in Sweeney’s big league career. Sweeney was recalled from the minor leagues when Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) hit the injured list, but he’s more of a bench option for the Tigers and waiver wire fodder for fantasy managers.

Sweeney is back less than a week after being optioned to Toledo to take the roster spot of Kerry Carpenter (hamstring). The former first-round pick struggled in his previous stint with the Tigers with a .221/.280/.314 slash, and fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a bench option.

The 25-year-old opened the season as the Tigers’ starting shortstop but since the return of Parker Meadows he has been phased out with Javier Baez drawing most of the starts at shortstop. Sweeney has slashed a disappointing .221/.280/.314 with just four homers, 23 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 225 plate appearances. He’ll see if he can get himself back on track in an everyday role at the Triple-A level.

The left-handed Sweeney was lifted today even though he had the platoon advantage against righty Sean Burke. Sweeney had a nice hot streak at the beginning of May, but he’s hit .121/.143/.121 over his last 20 games. The Tigers have both Javier Báez and Zach McKinstry capable of playing short, so Sweeney might not be long for the majors at this point.

Sweeney lined a single into right field off of Kyle Freeland in the second inning and came around to score as Zach McKinstry bounced into a fielder’s choice. He added another single the following frame and raced around to score on a single off the bat of Justyn-Henry Malloy. Sweeney has collected nine hits in his last three games, raising his batting average from .206 to .261 in the process.

Sweeney also drew a walk, so it was a five-reach game for the 25-year-old shortstop without getting out. The former first-round pick was able to double twice while also drawing a pair of singles on top of the free pass. The 25-year-old has picked up four hits in back-to-back games, and Sweeney’s slash has improved from .206/.292/.304 to .261/.344/.396 in the process.

Sweeney opened the scoring in the ballgame with an RBI single off of Jack Kochanowicz in the second inning, then scored on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run double. Sweeeney then crushed a 393-foot (100.4 mph EV) three-run homer off of Jose Fermin in the seventh inning that increased the Tigers’ lead to 11-0. He put the cherry on top of the victory with a two-run single in the ninth inning. The 25-year-old shortstop has been swinging a hot bat as of late and is now hitting .234/.317/.355 with three homers and 15 RBI on the season.
