Toro did an excellent job helping to fill Boston’s massive first base void after starter Triston Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury in early May. The well-traveled 28-year-old recorded a respectable .659 OPS with seven homers, 27 RBI and two steals in 77 games for the Red Sox before being cut loose after the club called up top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia in late August. He should be able to find another opportunity this offseason with another club as emergency infield depth as one of the more prominent minor league free agents on the open market.

Toro went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from Boston’s active roster earlier this week. The 28-year-old will remain stationed at Triple-A Worcester as emergency depth, but has the option to elect free agency and pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The move is now official. Toro has been removed from Boston’s infield mix to allow the club to bring up speedy utility infielder David Hamilton from Triple-A. It also clears a 40-man roster spot for top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia. The 28-year-old infielder did a nice job helping fill the void at first base after Triston Casas went down for the season.

Toro played the hero for the Red Sox a couple of times back in May, but he had long since returned to classic form and he should have been off the roster weeks ago. He’s at .244/.294/.378 in 279 plate appearances for the season.

Hopefully, with Nathaniel Lowe on the roster, this is pretty much the end of Toro being Boston’s first baseman. He’s hitting .194/.261/.263 in 180 plate appearances since June 13, and it’s past time for the Red Sox to move on from him entirely.

Toro did make a fantastic play at first base to cut down a run at home on a squeeze bunt attempt in what ended up being a 1-0 win, so give him credit for that. Still, now that he’s back hitting like Abraham Toro hits, he doesn’t need to be playing this regularly, especially given the way Romy González has performed. Toro is batting .205/.287/.241 in his last 25 games, but he’s started and González has sat the last two days.

Toro also came up big on defense in the seventh. With two on and two outs, Matt Olson hit a smash up the middle that Trevor Story made a nice play on but then uncorked a wild throw that appeared to pull Toro off the bag, which would have given the Braves a run, narrowing Boston’s lead to one, and left runners at the corners for Austin Riley. On replay, though, it was determined that Toro held the bag while diving to his right, resulting in an inning-ending out. Toro is now hitting .294/.294/.549 in 51 plate appearances for the Red Sox.

The second homer came with the Red Sox down 2-0 in the ninth. It looked like Jorge Mateo had a bead on in in center field, but he ended up flipping over the short wall as the ball bounced off his glove. Fortunately, he was able to remain in afterwards. Toro is 9-for-34 for the Red Sox, but now that he has three homers, he might be in line for some additional time at first base.

With Romy Gonzalez nursing a back injury following a collision at first base on Wednesday, Toro will make his first start for Boston this season. It doesn’t seem like Gonzalez will be out for too long though.

Toro provides Boston with an experienced stopgap solution at first base in the wake of Triston Casas suffering a serious left knee injury during Friday’s game against the Twins. The 28-year-old journeyman has hit .323 with two homers in 27 games this season at the Triple-A level. He holds a lifetime .220/.285/.353 triple-slash line in 365 games in the big leagues since 2019.
