Torrens absence places even more importance on Francisco Alvarez as New York’s starting backstop down the home stretch. It’ll be Hayden Senger returning to the big leagues as the club’s backup catcher.

Torres capped off a five-run uprising off of Sawyer Gipson-Long with an opposite-field, 353-foot (103.0 mph EV) three-run shot that clanged off of the foul pole. He also reached on a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning and swiped his first base of the season on the back end of a double steal with Jeff McNeil. For the season, the 29-year-old backstop is now hitting .229/.291/.354 with five dingers and 29 RBI.

Torrens put the game away with a three-run homer off Jordan Romano in the seventh. It’s his second career five-RBI game, with the other coming for the Mariners against the Blue Jays on Aug. 14, 2021. He got off to a nice start offensively this season, but he entered tonight with a .168/.206/.208 line, one homer and five RBI in total in 131 plate appearances since the beginning of June.

Torrens is back in the lineup after missing three straight games due to a left hand injury when he was struck on a catcher’s interference play earlier this week. The positive news is that he appears to have avoided serious injury. The Mets can’t really afford to lose him with Francisco Alvarez on the shelf with a UCL sprain in his right thumb.

Torrens was pulled from Sunday’s game at Citi Field in the top of the sixth inning after taking a foul tip to the groin area off the bat of Cubs star Kyle Tucker. He was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple before making an early exit. There should be an update on his status ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Pirates.

He just missed five straight games with a forearm bruise, but Torrens has excelled while filling in for Francisco Alvarez, batting .333/.375/.567 in 32 plate appearances. He’s still due to return to his reserve role once Alvarez is activated.
