After a rough first start to the season, Tolle has rebounded quickly with impressive Triple-A performances. He threw 63 percent of his pitches for strikes while registering a 25 percent whiff rate and 27 percent CSW. Most of his whiffs still come on his four-seam fastball, but he actually used his cutter more than any other pitch in this one and threw it over one mph harder than he had all season. That’s going to be an important pitch for him against righties, but he still needs to command it better than he has so far this year.

Tolle struck out six and gave up only four hard-hit balls, so it wasn’t so bad. Still, if he entered the spring on relatively even ground with Connelly Early, he’s well behind Early at the moment, and his odds of getting a quick recall to the majors don’t seem great.

The decision leaves Connelly Early and Johan Oviedo as the fifth and sixth options in Boston’s rotation mix. Tolle did almost everything possible to prove he belongs in the big leagues with a strong Grapefruit League showing that included a 2.53 ERA and 13/1 K/BB ratio across 10 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old top pitching prospect would’ve likely been ticketed for a long relief role at the start of the regular season so he’ll instead remain stretched out as a traditional starter on the doorstep of the majors until a more permanent opportunity arises. He’ll be worth rostering in all fantasy formats based on his strikeout upside once he gets a real chance.

Tolle walked none and threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 16 batters he faced today. With a 2.53 ERA and a 13/1 K/BB in 10 2/3 innings, the 23-year-old has had a very encouraging spring for Boston. Still, he’s likely going to head back to Triple-A unless someone ahead of him gets hurt.

Tolle topped 100 miles an hour on one pitch and averaged 98 with his four-seamer today while lowering his spring ERA to 4.05. It was a great performance under the circumstances, though it’s still unknown if Tolle has much of a chance to break camp with the Red Sox. He’d be pretty interesting if the Red Sox elected to go with him over Johan Oviedo, but the fact that he was pitching this deep into the game likely tells us he’d need to start stacking more of these performances in a hurry to make the club on Opening Day.

Tolle got burned by soft contact and the one hard-hit ball he allowed was a 95.3-mph flyball double that ought to have been caught. Still, he didn’t help himself by hitting a couple of batters, which played a role in him getting lifted before he could finish a second inning. Tolle has very little margin for error this spring if he hopes to open up as Boston’s fifth starter.

Tolle served up a two-out homer to Royce Lewis in the opening frame before responding with a flawless second inning to close out a strong spring debut. The 23-year-old top pitching prospect averaged a crisp 96.5 mph on his fastball in this one. He’s technically in the mix for the final spot in Boston’s season-opening rotation, but that spot seems likely to go to a veteran arm like Johan Oviedo or Kutter Crawford. Tolle offers enough strikeout potential that he should remain on fantasy manager’s radar screens as an in-season pickup.

This isn’t overly surprising, but it is worth noting with Lucas Giolito (elbow) out for this series. The Red Sox will likely turn to Early to start Game 3, if there is one, but both Harrison and Tolle remain options and could also provide bulk relief in Game 2 if Brayan Bello were to struggle.

Tolle topped out at 99.7 mph in his first inning of work, though his velocity in innings two and three was pretty close to where he was a starter. He wound up getting 12 whiffs on 30 swings in 50 pitches. Since it was an extended outing, he certainly won’t be available again before Sunday, if then.

Kyle Harrison will be inserted into Boston’s rotation mix this weekend against the Rays. The decision doesn’t come as a total surprise since the Red Sox are prioritizing limiting Tolle’s workload down the home stretch in an effort to keep him healthy for the future. The 22-year-old southpaw has already eclipsed 100 innings in his professional debut after throwing just a shade over 80 last year in his final collegiate campaign. The move puts a damper on his immediate fantasy appeal, but it’s probably the right move for his future.

Tolle is an option for Red Sox manager Alex Cora out of the bullpen for at least the first two games of the mid-week series against the Athletics. The 22-year-old top pitching prospect figures to take the ball at some point this weekend during a critical three-game series against the division-rival Rays, but that isn’t official yet.

The Red Sox said before the game that Tolle, pitching on four days’ rest of the first time, would go just once around the lineup today, and that’s what happened. Unfortunately, he gave up homers to Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz along the way. Tolle could make his next start Tuesday against the A’s, but Connelly Early might be Boston’s choice instead. Since the Red Sox have Thursday and Monday off, perhaps Tolle could make a relief appearance before starting again,

Cora added that Tolle won’t draw the starting assignment for Wednesday’s series finale. The 22-year-old top prospect figures to be part of the mix after surrendering five runs over three innings on Friday in a loss to the Diamondbacks. There’s plenty of strikeout upside here for fantasy purposes, but it sounds like Tolle is going to have some clear workload restrictions over the final three weeks.

Tolle had issues finding the strike zone, as he issued four walks and threw just 46-of-77 pitches for strikes. The command and control were both off, as he also allowed a pair of homers and didn’t get ahead of hitters for the overwhelming majority of the start. The 22-year-old looked solid against the Pirates; this was far less impressive. It happens. Tolle still offers some upside when he faces off against the A’s on Wednesday in Sacramento.
