Urquidy had allowed two runs through 2 1/3 innings in his first two appearances back from Tommy John, and the Tigers decided he wasn’t ready to contribute just yet. The DFA in this case is technical, but it won’t result in him going on waivers; he’s being optioned and will immediately return to the 40-man roster, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.

That’s assuming that the 30-year-old hurler isn’t needed out of the bullpen first on Saturday afternoon. It’ll be Urquidy’s first time on a big league mound since September of 2023. He threw 19 2/3 innings over 10 appearances on his minor league rehab assignment, so he’ll probably be limited to just a few innings of work his first time out on Sunday. Look for Casey Mize, who had been slated to start on Sunday, to pitch on Tuesday against the Guardians.

The 30-year-old right-hander has made the long and arduous journey all the way back from Tommy John surgery. He appeared in 10 games (eight starts) during his minor league rehab assignment, posting a 3.20 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and a 16/5 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings of work. It’s unclear if he’ll be used out of the bullpen for the Tigers or if he’ll take over the rotation spot that was vacated by the injured Sawyer Gipson-Long.

Urquidy was making his first Triple-A start after allowing one run over five innings in four appearances for Low-A Lakeland. If the Tigers activate him next month, he’s expected to be used in relief. He averaged 92.0 mph with his fastball last night, down from 93.3 mph in his 63 innings before undergoing surgery last year.

The 30-year-old right-hander threw a perfect inning his first time out on Sunday so anticipate that he’ll probably work at least two innings in this one. If all goes well, he should move his rehab assignment up a level or two for next week’s start as he continues to build back up following Tommy John surgery.

The Tigers signed Urquidy in March and placed him on the 60-day IL. The 30-year-old is making his way back from Tommy John surgery and will “ramp up his workload in the coming days,” according to manager A.J. Hinch. He could be an option in Detroit in the final months of the season, but we would keep our expectations in check for fantasy purposes.
