Urías has started three of the last five games at second base and is now 18-for-60 in 21 games since coming to the Astros at the trade deadline. He has 10 home runs and 40 RBI on the season and could be an intriguing deep-league option if he can start to take some playing time away from Mauricio Dubon.

Urias hit a ground ball with runners on first and third, and Baltimore was unable to turn the double play, so Houston get the win. Some potentially sweet revenge for a player who was a member of the Orioles until the deadline. He also went 0-for-6 in the game with two strikeouts, so this was the only silver lining to the effort. Urias should remain in a utility role with Houston for the foreseeable future.

The homer off Jordan Hicks was Urías’s first through seven games with the Astros and ninth in 84 games overall this year. He’s strictly a part-timer in Houston, but he should be stealing away a bunch of Mauricio Dubón’s infield playing time.

With Isaac Paredes (hamstring) looking at a lengthy absence, the Astros wanted to bring in some extra insurance at third base. Urías can play anywhere on the infield and could be the starting third baseman until Paredes comes back, or could even slide to second base if the Astros acquire Carlos Correa today.

Urías makes a ton of sense for Houston as a temporary stopgap solution at the hot corner with Isaac Paredes (hamstring) appearing likely to miss the remainder of the regular season. The 31-year-old infielder is hitting .248/.300/.388 with eight homers, 34 RBI and two steals in 290 plate appearances over 77 games this season for the Orioles.

Back when it was still a close game, Urías had a misplay in the third that led to a run, though since it was ruled a single and an error, the run was still earned. He more than made up for it later, of course, homering in the sixth and seventh innings as the Orioles turned this one into a laugher. It was his second career two-homer game. The other came against the Rays in 2022.

Urías hit a classic Yankee Stadium home run in the eighth inning of this one off Luke Weaver that just barely stretched over the right field fence next to the foul pole. Despite all the young talent that’s come up through Baltimore over the last four years, Urías still has an everyday job and a spot in the heart of this order.

Urías will be out of action for at least a week with the strain, and the Orioles are bringing up top prospect Coby Mayo to take his place on the roster. There should be a more concrete timeline for when Urías can return in the coming days.

Urías isn’t on Baltimore’s lineup card, but he hasn’t been officially placed on the injured list yet. It’ll be Emmanuel Rivera at the hot corner on Saturday night against the Royals. The 30-year-old was scratched from Friday’s lineup with right hamstring tightness and top prospect Coby Mayo is set to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, according to multiple reports.

No word yet on the severity of the injury or how much time the 30-year-old infielder may stand to miss. Emmanuel Rivera will start in his place at the hot corner on Friday night and will bat ninth against Michael Wacha and the Royals.

Urías’ second inning home gave the Orioles an early lead that they would never relinquish despite some shaky moments from their bullpen. There’s been a constant public outcry from the fantasy baseball community against Urías’ playing time over some highly regarded prospects during the past years, but he’s been one of the most productive bats in Baltimore to this point in the season with a .757 OPS.

Maybe the Orioles’ second-best player to date, Urías is batting .340/.403/.434 in 62 plate appearances, and he’s stealing away Ryan Mountcastle’s playing time against righties. He probably doesn’t have any mixed-league value himself — he’s a zero in steals and he doesn’t typically hit for average — but he’s making an impact by cutting into the value of others.
