There’s a chance Volpe is activated to make his season debut during Friday’s series opener against the Orioles. Jasson Domínguez (elbow) requiring a trip to the injured list would be the easiest path to freeing up a roster spot. The 25-year-old’s biggest concern going forward is going to be holding off New York’s top prospect, George Lombard Jr., who was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier this week and could be ready for the majors later this summer.

Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reported over the weekend that Volpe would rejoin the Yankees this week. That could still happen, but he remains on a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset for at least the next couple days. It sounds like New York has yet to make a decision on his status for this weekend’s series against the Orioles. His return in the next couple days could come down to whether Giancarlo Stanton (calf) needs a trip to the injured list, which would open up a roster spot.

Volpe will head to Double-A Somerset to start the week because they are closer to New York, and will play three games in two days on Tuesday and Wednesday. That could mean Volpe returns to the Yankees on Thursday. If he pushes Jose Caballero off of shortstop, that could mean Caballero gets more at-bats in the outfield or third base, which might impact playing time for Ryan McMahon or Jasson Dominguez.

It was Volpe’s first game at Triple-A after going 4-for-11 with two steals at Double-A. This home run was actually the first extra-base hit of his rehab stint so far. The 24-year-old struggled both offensively and defensively in 2025, but it’s entirely possible that his shoulder played a large role in that. Jose Caballero has not played so well in Volpe’s absence that the Yankees will want to keep Volpe out of the lineup initially. However, his career .222/.283/.379 MLB slash line does mean that fantasy managers shouldn’t feel the need to rush out and add him if he’s on waiver wires. He does have the potential to be a 20/20 threat, so there is some fantasy upside; he’s just not a must-roster player.

Volpe had the unfortunate task of facing Phillies rehabbing ace Zack Wheeler in his first game action since last year’s shoulder procedure. The 24-year-old shortstop will need a couple weeks to get back up to speed before making his season debut.

The Yankees have promising top prospect George Lombard Jr. still working his way towards the big leagues which means that Volpe will be their shortstop of the present once he’s ready for his season debut. The 24-year-old will need a couple weeks of at-bats to get back up to speed but could be ready to return to New York by the end of April or early May.

Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Friday that the plan is for Volpe to serve as the team’s starting shortstop upon his return. He missed the entirety of spring training, so he’s going to need at least a few weeks’ worth of at-bats in the minor leagues before he’s an option to help out at the Major League level. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready at some point in early May.

Volpe has progressed to taking live at-bats in extended spring training at the Yankees facility in Florida. It’ll be a lengthy rehab assignment since he hasn’t played since last postseason before undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. The 24-year-old shortstop figures to be ready to make his season debut at some point in May. His fantasy stock has tumbled over the past two seasons, but he’s still young enough to turn things around.

It’s the first update on Volpe’s status from Yankees manager Aaron Boone since he hit the injured list at the conclusion of spring training. The 24-year-old shortstop continues working his way back from offseason shoulder surgery and figures to be ready to make his season debut at some point in late April or early May following a rehab assignment.

Just a procedural move with the Yankees taking the field in the season’s opening day on Wednesday night. Volpe is still expected to return sometime in late April or early May.

Volpe is making his way back from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. He began his hitting program about a month ago and has now progressed to facing velocity. From there, he will need to begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A, but it’s not out of the question for him to return to the Yankees at the end of April or early in May. That could move Jose Caballero to the bench.

It’s the first time that the 24-year-old shortstop has swung a bat since undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. The Yankees are already expecting to be without Volpe for all of April, so they’re going to let him take his time as he progresses through his recovery. Jose Caballero is expected to see the bulk of the action at shortstop while Volpe is shelved.

Volpe is sitting at exactly three years of service time after debuting at the beginning of the 2023 season. He’s avoided any Triple-A demotions since, though it’s possible that could happen this year if he’s not quickly up to speed once he makes his way back from shoulder surgery. He struggled to a .212/.272/.391 line in 153 games last season.

There is no timeline beyond that, so the shortstop’s return will depend on how his off-season recovery goes. The Yankees went from insisting Volpe wasn’t playing through an injury to likely being without their starting shortstop for at least the first month of the season. Jose Caballero figures to begin the year at short for the Yankees, unless they make a move in the off-season.

Volpe can start hitting in four months, but it’ll be six before he’s allowed to dive on defense, which probably means he’ll spend most of April on the injured list. Boone, who maintained that he didn’t think playing through a labrum tear had much of an effect on Volpe’s performance, also didn’t promise that Volpe would get his starting job back after returning. José Caballero can be penciled in as the Yankees’ Opening Day shortstop for now, though the team will add another utility option.

The Yankees have yet to comment, but Volpe apparently had the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder repaired. He was hurt diving for a groundball in May, but he played through it while receiving cortisone shots in June and September. While it’s possible the Yankees will look to move on from Volpe this winter, the fact that he was hurt during his disappointing season should give them pause about selling low.

Volpe came through with a run-scoring single off of Connelly Early in the fourth inning that extended the Yankees’ lead to 2-0. He would strike out in each of his other three plate appearances on the night. The next battle for the Yankees will be against the Blue Jays in Toronto in the ALDS beginning on Saturday.

Volpe’s opposite-field blast against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet had to feel good for the much-maligned shortstop after a tumultuous regular season where he tied for the American League with 19 errors and was the subject of constant criticism from Yankees fans. He also singled in the eighth inning to snap a streak of 17 consecutive batters retired by Crochet since the round-tripper. The Yankees will have their backs up against the wall in a win-or-go-home Game 2 showdown at Yankee Stadium.

Volpe makes his fourth consecutive start at shortstop with New York aiming to edge the Blue Jays and Red Sox for the AL East division crown. The 24-year-old has been abysmal from a defensive standpoint, but he offers a higher offensive ceiling than speedy utility specialist José Caballero heading into the postseason.

Volpe had Sunday off, but this will be four starts in the Yankees’ last five games for him. José Caballero is again out of the lineup; the Yankees haven’t started him anywhere other than shortstop since putting him at third base last Tuesday.

Volpe finds himself back at shortstop following a six-game absence due to a lingering left shoulder issue that required a cortisone injection. It recently came to light that he’s been playing through a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder since early May. The 24-year-old’s return comes after José Caballero made a couple prominent mistakes both defensively and on the basepaths during Monday’s shutout loss to the Twins. His long-term future is a bit of an open question, but the Yankees are going to need him for the rest of the season since they don’t have any superior in-house alternatives.

The José Caballero era continues for New York. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone told reporters Sunday that Volpe is available off the bench, but he remains out of the lineup as he continues to deal with a lingering left shoulder issue stemming from an early-May incident where he suffered a partially torn labrum.

Volpe remains stapled to New York’s bench as he continues to attempt to play through a torn labrum in his left shoulder that has apparently been bothering him since early May. It’ll be speedster José Caballero continuing to handle shortstop in his absence. There’s been no indication that the Yankees are considering sending him to the injured list after he received a cortisone injection earlier this week to address the lingering issue. He’s likely to sit out Sunday’s series finale as well.

Volpe has been playing for most of the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and received a cortisone injection on Wednesday. While Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone noted to reporters on Thursday that the injury isn’t the reason for Volpe’s struggles at the plate this season, it certainly hasn’t helped things. Jose Caballero will start in his place again and will bat eighth for the Bombers against Lucas Giolito and the Red Sox.

This is the same shoulder that, according to Sherman, Volpe heard “go pop” back in May. The Yankees reported no structural damage at the time, but Volpe has apparently been feeling “discomfort on occasion in the area since.” Aaron Boone has also repeatedly said that Volpe is healthy and today said, “I think it’s something that’s also improved over the course of the year. I feel like, even lately, it’s been in as good a place as it’s been.” The shot would seem to suggest otherwise, so it will be interesting to see if the Yankees decide to give Volpe extra days off in the coming weeks.

Volpe’s home run was his 19th of the year. The 24-year-old shortstop hit a two-run shot off Mike Vasil in the seventh inning. It was Volpe’s first home run since August 13 against the Twins. He was slugging .136 in his last 13 games entering play Friday. Volpe is hitting .209 with a .677 OPS and 69 RBI on the year.

That’s six straight hitless games. His first at-bat was a good one, as Volpe hit a 104-mph liner to third with the bases loaded in the first. The remaining four, though, produced no hard contact. At least Volpe did have a nice game defensively. He’ll likely be in the lineup again Thursday against the White Sox.

Volpe’s final at-bat produced a 396-foot fly that would have been a homer in 10 ballparks, according to Statcast, but Yankee Stadium wasn’t one of them. Fortunately, it was a clean night defensively, and the Yankees won, so the Volpe takes should be pretty mild tonight.
