Volpe can start hitting in four months, but it’ll be six before he’s allowed to dive on defense, which probably means he’ll spend most of April on the injured list. Boone, who maintained that he didn’t think playing through a labrum tear had much of an effect on Volpe’s performance, also didn’t promise that Volpe would get his starting job back after returning. José Caballero can be penciled in as the Yankees’ Opening Day shortstop for now, though the team will add another utility option.

The Yankees have yet to comment, but Volpe apparently had the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder repaired. He was hurt diving for a groundball in May, but he played through it while receiving cortisone shots in June and September. While it’s possible the Yankees will look to move on from Volpe this winter, the fact that he was hurt during his disappointing season should give them pause about selling low.

Volpe came through with a run-scoring single off of Connelly Early in the fourth inning that extended the Yankees’ lead to 2-0. He would strike out in each of his other three plate appearances on the night. The next battle for the Yankees will be against the Blue Jays in Toronto in the ALDS beginning on Saturday.

Volpe’s opposite-field blast against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet had to feel good for the much-maligned shortstop after a tumultuous regular season where he tied for the American League with 19 errors and was the subject of constant criticism from Yankees fans. He also singled in the eighth inning to snap a streak of 17 consecutive batters retired by Crochet since the round-tripper. The Yankees will have their backs up against the wall in a win-or-go-home Game 2 showdown at Yankee Stadium.

Volpe makes his fourth consecutive start at shortstop with New York aiming to edge the Blue Jays and Red Sox for the AL East division crown. The 24-year-old has been abysmal from a defensive standpoint, but he offers a higher offensive ceiling than speedy utility specialist José Caballero heading into the postseason.

Volpe had Sunday off, but this will be four starts in the Yankees’ last five games for him. José Caballero is again out of the lineup; the Yankees haven’t started him anywhere other than shortstop since putting him at third base last Tuesday.

Volpe finds himself back at shortstop following a six-game absence due to a lingering left shoulder issue that required a cortisone injection. It recently came to light that he’s been playing through a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder since early May. The 24-year-old’s return comes after José Caballero made a couple prominent mistakes both defensively and on the basepaths during Monday’s shutout loss to the Twins. His long-term future is a bit of an open question, but the Yankees are going to need him for the rest of the season since they don’t have any superior in-house alternatives.

The José Caballero era continues for New York. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone told reporters Sunday that Volpe is available off the bench, but he remains out of the lineup as he continues to deal with a lingering left shoulder issue stemming from an early-May incident where he suffered a partially torn labrum.

Volpe remains stapled to New York’s bench as he continues to attempt to play through a torn labrum in his left shoulder that has apparently been bothering him since early May. It’ll be speedster José Caballero continuing to handle shortstop in his absence. There’s been no indication that the Yankees are considering sending him to the injured list after he received a cortisone injection earlier this week to address the lingering issue. He’s likely to sit out Sunday’s series finale as well.

Volpe has been playing for most of the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and received a cortisone injection on Wednesday. While Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone noted to reporters on Thursday that the injury isn’t the reason for Volpe’s struggles at the plate this season, it certainly hasn’t helped things. Jose Caballero will start in his place again and will bat eighth for the Bombers against Lucas Giolito and the Red Sox.

This is the same shoulder that, according to Sherman, Volpe heard “go pop” back in May. The Yankees reported no structural damage at the time, but Volpe has apparently been feeling “discomfort on occasion in the area since.” Aaron Boone has also repeatedly said that Volpe is healthy and today said, “I think it’s something that’s also improved over the course of the year. I feel like, even lately, it’s been in as good a place as it’s been.” The shot would seem to suggest otherwise, so it will be interesting to see if the Yankees decide to give Volpe extra days off in the coming weeks.

Volpe has been horrendous in September and is coming off two games where he struck out five times in six at-bats without picking up a hit. The 24-year-old retreats to the bench with Jose Caballero getting the start at shortstop in his absence.

It’s the first time all week that the 24-year-old shortstop has found himself on the bench. Jose Caballero will start in his place at shortstop and will bat ninth for the Bombers against Blue Jays’ right-hander Kevin Gausman.

Volpe’s home run was his 19th of the year. The 24-year-old shortstop hit a two-run shot off Mike Vasil in the seventh inning. It was Volpe’s first home run since August 13 against the Twins. He was slugging .136 in his last 13 games entering play Friday. Volpe is hitting .209 with a .677 OPS and 69 RBI on the year.

That’s six straight hitless games. His first at-bat was a good one, as Volpe hit a 104-mph liner to third with the bases loaded in the first. The remaining four, though, produced no hard contact. At least Volpe did have a nice game defensively. He’ll likely be in the lineup again Thursday against the White Sox.

Volpe’s final at-bat produced a 396-foot fly that would have been a homer in 10 ballparks, according to Statcast, but Yankee Stadium wasn’t one of them. Fortunately, it was a clean night defensively, and the Yankees won, so the Volpe takes should be pretty mild tonight.

He’s batting eighth against MacKenzie Gore. With the lefty on the mound for the Nationals, the Yankees also have Giancarlo Stanton, Paul Goldschmidt and Amed Rosario starting tonight, with Jasson Domínguez, Ben Rice and Ryan McMahon on the bench.

Boone reiterated that he plans to use Volpe “regularly” for the rest of the season and still views him as the club’s shortstop. The 24-year-old is out of the lineup on Monday for the second straight contest after committing his American League-leading 17th error during Saturday’s blowout loss to the division-rival Red Sox. New York doesn’t exactly have a ton of alternatives at this late stage of the season, entering the final five weeks. They could turn things over to José Caballero, but that would only be a temporary stopgap solution.

Volpe was benched on Sunday as well after making his American League-leading 17th error during Saturday’s loss to the Red Sox. It sounds like it’s just a couple of days for the 24-year-old shortstop to clear his head and he has been told that he will be back in the lineup on Tuesday. Look for Jose Caballero to handle the position in his absence once again on Monday.

Is this a power hitter? Volpe stepped up to the plate with his Yankees down by one run in the bottom of the ninth and delivered a clutch, game-tying home run against Rays’ closer Pete Fairbanks. He didn’t hide his excitement while rounding the bases after a season’s worth of negativity from the New York media and his teammates seemed to celebrate extra hard when he returned to the dugout. That was Volpe’s sixth homer in 11 games. He had just six home runs in his previous 91 games when he was more focused on being a contact hitter. He’s also made five errors at shortstop in those same 11 games. A bit of an enigma production wise, it’s easy to forget that he’s still just 24 years old and going through some growing pains.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn’t mince words when addressing Volpe’s defensive struggles following Tuesday’s contest, but there’s no indication the club is considering a benching just yet. The 24-year-old shortstop leads the American League with 15 errors after committing two more in Tuesday’s win, though he did help offset them with a solo homer and an RBI single at the plate.

It was an eventful game for Volpe, who crushed a Kevin Kelly pitch in the eighth for his 15th homer of the year. He also swiped his 12th base, so he’s nearly on pace for a 20 HR/20 SB campaign. Certainly, everyone would prefer better than a .216 average, and the glove has been surprisingly shaky, especially of late, but we’re still talking about a 24-year-old who isn’t yet a finished product. There’s a good chance he’ll show more improvement here in the second half.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Volpe can’t exactly figure out the player he wants to be. This home run was his fourth homer in his last six games and came on a swing that was 75.6 mph, three ticks above his season average. He had three hard-hit balls in total and seems to be pushing himself to be a power hitter again, rather than the contact-oriented approach he struggled with over the last few months. Maybe it sticks, or maybe he will try to be a different player again tomorrow.

Back to pulling the ball with authority, Volpe is on a bit of a power surge with three home runs over his last five games. Yet, he has just four total hits in his last seven games. It’s been a battle of approaches this season for Volpe, and one that it doesn’t seem like will be resolved any time soon.

Volpe has been dropped to the bottom of Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s lineup card amid a disastrous .142 (15-for-106) stretch over his last 30 games, which includes just four homers and three steals during that span. The 24-year-old shortstop has 12 homers and 10 steals through 99 games this season, but he’s underwhelmed relative to fantasy managers’ lofty expectations.

Volpe has gone through it for the majority of 2025, but this was a very friendly reminder that it’s not a question of talent. He took Wander Suero deep with a runner on in the fifth to get the Yankees on the board, and he came up huge with a solo homer in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8. Volpe now has 12 homers on the season, but his slash of .216/.288/.399 is gonna need a few more nights like this to please fantasy managers who have rostered him this year.

It’s a scheduled off day for Volpe, who finally snapped a prolonged hitless streak during Saturday’s one-sided blowout, finishing 3-for-4 with his ninth home run of the season. The 24-year-old shortstop should be back in there for Monday’s series opener against the Reds. It’ll be Oswald Peraza taking over at shortstop during Sunday morning’s matinee at Yankee Stadium.

Volpe knocked a base hit in the third inning and scored on a single by Oswald Peraza. He then led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast off Andrew Kittredge before collecting his third hit of the day with a single in the sixth. The 24-year-old shortstop is hitting .236/.308/.424 with nine homers, 33 runs scored, 41 RBI, and eight steals across 306 plate appearances.

Volpe is at shortstop and batting sixth on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium following a one-game absence after being hit by a pitch on the left elbow during Friday’s showdown. X-rays came back negative for any fractures and it doesn’t appear to be a serious concern moving forward.
