Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Varsho had experienced pain from his outer quad to his knee prior to Friday’s game. The 29-year-old will take a seat Friday against the Diamondbacks, and Schneider told reporters that the outfielder will likely sit a game or two to make sure he’s right.

Varsho said he was already feeling it prior to the game Friday, which he left in the third inning. No MRI is planned at this time, and it appears that he’s day-to-day. Myles Straw figured to start at least Saturday’s game in this place.

Varsho’s third homer of the season came off Jacob Misiorowski and brought the Brewers to within a run at 3-2 in the sixth. He also singled to bump his slash to .263/.333/.491 with seven RBI, and he’s picked up multiple hits in three of his last four games.

Swinging harder meant more homers and more strikeouts for Varsho last year, and it certainly proved worth the tradeoff. This spring, though, he’s still swinging hard and just not missing; he’s batting .442/.489/.953 with two strikeouts in 47 plate appearances. We doubt he’ll have such an easy time once the games begin to matter, but he seems underrated at this point, especially the Jays likely to make him their usual No. 2 hitter.

Varsho usually hit in the bottom half of the Blue Jays lineup last year, but he’s making a strong case to take over the second spot in between George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. this season. He’s hitting .452/.485/.935 with just one strikeout in 33 plate appearances this spring.

Varsho ripped a Chase Stuggart cutter into the gap. He’s up to a 1.147 OPS in big-league camp. There’s plenty of power upside in Varsho’s bat, just don’t expect his .393 spring batting average to translate against big league pitching.

Varsho was a big help in fantasy leagues in the final two months of last season, hitting .256 with 12 homers and 35 RBI in 47 games after returning from a hamstring strain. If he could keep that up, he might get a chance to hit third or fourth against righties, giving his value another boost. Alas, he was all the way down at seventh in the lineup today behind Addison Barger in the fifth spot and Kazuma Okamoto hitting sixth.

Varsho has never quite taken off like many expected when he was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Blue Jays after the 2022 season. Last year, he hit .238/.284/.548 with 20 home runs and just two steals in 71 games. The power was nice to see, and Varsho plays tremendous defense in center field, but he has hit just .221 in three seasons with the Blue Jays, which significantly caps his fantasy upside, especially if he’s no longer stealing 15 or more bases in a season.

Varsho tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run shot off Blake Snell; Snell’s first homer allowed in 190 batters. He also was hit in the shoulder by Snell in the sixth, and came around to score on a single by Andres Giménez. Varsho will likely hit fifth again against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series come Saturday.

Varsho led off the second inning with a double off of Max Fried and rode home on Ernie Clement’s two-run blast. He then smacked an RBI double off of Fried in the third inning that extended the Jays’ advantage to 4-0 before scoring on an RBI single by Clement. The 29-year-old slugger then crushed a 407-foot (106.6 mph EV) two-run shot off of Will Warren in the fourth that made it 11-0. He tacked on a 346-foot (95.1 mph EV) solo shot off of Warren in the sixth that made it 13-2. The 23 runs that the Blue Jays scored set a new MLB record for the most runs scored by any team through their first two games of the postseason.

The Jays entered the sixth inning embattled in a scoreless tie, but they got something going as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached on an error, Addison Barger drew a walk and then Anthony Santander was plunked to load the bases. That’s when Varsho strolled to the dish and crushed an 0-2 fastball from Justin Wilson for a 371-foot (103.2 mph EV) grand slam that gave the Jays a commanding 4-0 lead. He also singled in the contest, finishing the game 2-for-4. On the season, the 29-year-old slugger is slashing .237/.286/.559 with 20 homers and 55 RBI. He’ll be etched in Jays’ lore forever though if that blast helps them to secure a division title and the top seed in the American League.

Varsho finally broke through against Royals’ southpaw Noah Cameron as he ambushed a first-pitch cutter for a 437-foot (106.2 mph EV) solo shot that pulled the Jays to within a run at 2-1. That would be as close as they would get. For the season, the 29-year-old slugger is now hitting .236/.288/.568 with 19 homers and 51 RBI in only 243 plate appearances.

Varsho checked his swing on the pitch and was drilled square on his hand. He dropped to the ground in immediate pain and after a short consultation with the training staff and manager John Schneider, the decision was made to pull him from the game. The 29-year-old outfielder will head right for imaging to see if there are any fractures. Stay tuned.

Varsho’s home run was his 15th of the year. The 29-year-old outfielder has been blazing hot since returning from injury earlier this season. His 15 home runs have come in just 43 games and 154 at-bats — he hit 18 home runs last year in 136 games and 459 at-bats. Varsho is hitting .234, but has a .591 SLG and 40 RBI this year.

Varsho then broke the game open in the sixth as he ambushed a first-pitch cutter for a 423-foot (108.3 mph EV) two-run blast that made it a 5-1 ballgame. Varsho has been a solid source of run production when healthy this season, slashing .236/.294/.597 with 14 homers, 37 RBI and one stolen base in just 160 plate appearances.

Varsho knocked a base hit and scored a run in the second inning as the Blue Jays put up six runs in the frame. He then drew a walk and scored again in the third before taking Jon Gray deep for a two-run homer in the fifth. Varsho would collect his third hit with a double in the sixth before he was replaced defensively in the blowout. The 29-year-old outfielder is up to 13 homers while hitting .248/.306/.620 across 144 plate appearances.

Varsho gave the Blue Jays the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer off Anthony Molina. He’d get to Molina again in the sixth for his second two-run blast, knocking Molina from the game. Varsho collected two more RBI with a double in the ninth. The 29-year-old outfielder is up to 11 homers and 30 RBI while slashing .222/.256/.602 across 117 plate appearances.

Varsho will make his return to the lineup after missing two months with his hamstring strain. His defensive aptitude will keep him in the lineup everyday, and he’s not bereft of offensive upside. There’s some volatility here, but it’s late enough in the fantasy season to take chances on players like Varsho.

The Jays want to get Varsho somewhere between three-to-five innings in the outfield on Friday night as they continue to ease him back into game action. He’s expected to remain at Dunedin through the weekend before moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Buffalo next week. It remains to be seen just how many games he’ll require before he’s ready to rejoin the Jays.

Varsho had been expected to start on Monday, and there have been no indications as to why it got pushed back a couple of days, but he did finally see live game action on Thursday — albeit as the designated hitter. There he went 0-for-3 with a couple of groundouts. He’s likely to remain on a rehab assignment through the weekend at a minimum before potentially being cleared to rejoin the Jays at some point during the following week.
