Varland took the loss on Tuesday night when he gave up a three-run home run to Aaron Judge in relief of Shane Bieber. Varland allowed two runs on two hits in his one inning, but he struck out two, and the pitch Aaron Judge hit out was a 100 mph fastball on the inside corner. Sometimes, you tip your hat to the batter. Varland had a 2.97 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 75/22 K/BB ratio in 72 2/3 innings out of the bullpen this season. However, he was far more effective with the Twins prior to the deadline. With the Blue Jays using a bullpen game in Game 4, they’ll hope Varland can give them two or three good innings.
