The ninth started with what should have been a groundout for José Ramírez but turned into an infield single and a two-base error that put Ramírez on third. Vest, though, got out of it by striking out George Valera and getting Kyle Manzardo to tap back to the mound, which resulted in Ramírez being tagged out between third and home. C.J. Kayfus popped out to end it.

Despite their epic late-season collapse, the Tigers were still in pole position to secure the final Wild Card berth in the American League thanks to the recent struggles of the Astros. They finally got it done on Saturday, using a two-run single from Jahmai Jones in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. From there, the bullpen made sure that it held up with Vest retiring the side in order in the ninth to earn his 23rd save of the season.

Vest came on with a two-run lead to protect and he didn’t disappoint in this one, striking out Gabriel Arias, Angel Martinez and Bo Naylor in succession to put the Guardians away and pull the Tigers back even with them atop the standings in the American League Central. Vest has now converted 22 of his first 28 save chances on the season while posting a 3.06 ERA and a 74/22 K/BB ratio over 67 2/3 innings.

Vest was summoned to protect a narrow one-run margin against the lower third of Atlanta’s lineup and immediately got into trouble by surrendering back-to-back singles, which put the tying run in scoring position. He bounced back to punch out Michael Harris II and Sandy León before uncorking a wild pitch that made things even more interesting. He had a chance to get out of the frame and preserve the victory, but rookie Nacho Alvarez Jr. poked a game-tying single to right field. He was mercifully lifted after relenting a go-ahead single to ensuing batter Jurickson Profar.

Vest came on to work the top half of the 10th inning after Kerry Carpenter slugged a game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning. Vest immediately gave the lead back as Steven Kwan smacked the second pitch that he threw for an RBI double. Angel Martinez followed with an RBI triple and then scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jose Ramirez. Vest then recorded a pair of outs before Gabriel Arias added an RBI single. The Tigers have been overly reliant on Vest since Kyle Finnegan landed on the injured list and it’s possible that fatigue may have played a role in his struggles on Tuesday.

Vest allowed a walk and a single with one out before Joey Weimer flew out to left and Javier Sanoja struck out. It’s Vest’s first save since August 29, though he has pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings this month.

Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch called upon Kyle Finnegan to put out a fire with the tying run on third base with one out in the seventh inning. He struck out both batters he faced to do so, then worked a scoreless eighth — passing the baton to Vest in the ninth. Vest held serve, working a scoreless inning to notch his 20th save of the season. They have given the Tigers an outstanding 1-2 punch at the back end of their bullpen.

The 30-year-old hurler came on in a scoreless game in the ninth inning after Tarik Skubal had spun seven shutout innings and Kyle Finnegan had worked a scoreless eighth. He allowed a one-out single to Carlos Correa, then got Jose Altuve to ground into an inning-ending double play ball. After throwing just 12 pitches in the ninth, Vest returned to work the 10th inning and retired Taylor Trammell, Jacob Melton and Jesus Sanchez in succession, setting the stage for the walk-off win. He has been a valuable weapon for the Tigers this season, posting a 2.45 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 61/16 K/BB ratio over 55 innings while securing 18 saves in 23 chances to go along with six wins.

Kyle Finnegan got the eighth inning against the 5-6-7 hitters for the White Sox and allowed one baserunner, so Vest was tasked with getting the 9-1-2 hitters out and did so with no issue. He struck out one and didn’t allow a single baserunner in securing his 18th save. This feels like a pure committee, but both Vest and Finnegan should retain fantasy value.

Kyle Finnegan had recorded the final out of the eighth inning and would have likely stuck around to work the ninth as well had a torrential downpour broken out and forced the game into an extended rain delay. Vest ultimately came on and struck out Lenyn Sosa, got Andrew Benintendi on a ground ball to second base and then retired Luis Robert Jr. on a bouncer to second to end it. While he’s no longer the closer in Motown, Vest is still second in line for save chances and that will still give him some mixed league value in deeper formats.

Vest entered the game with a one-run lead in the eighth inning. The 30-year-old right-hander ran into trouble right away by issuing back-to-back walks before a game-tying double. Vest then walked the next batter before escaping the bases-loaded, no out situation with a fly ball and a double play. He’ll continue to receive the bulk of the save opportunities for the Tigers unless the team trades for a more established closer prior to the trade deadline.

The 30-year-old right-hander nabbed his 15th save of the season for his efforts. Vest struck out Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Mangum each on swinging third strikes to open the inning before allowing a two-out single to Chandler Simpson. Not to fret though, as he rallied to retire Jose Caballero on a swinging third strike to end it. He now sports a stellar 2.14 ERA on the season to go along with 15 saves and five victories in what has been an impressive season.

“I’m expecting to have him available in some capacity and not go on the injured list,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said on MLB Network Radio. “Things can always change if we get more information. But so far, so good.” If Vest does wind up experiencing a setback, Tommy Kahnle would be in line for more save chances.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Vest was immediately lifted from Sunday’s contest when he experienced something in his pinky finger after uncorking a wild pitch. He added that the 30-year-old righty will undergo a battery of tests to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Pirates. It’s unclear whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list yet. Any sort of extended absence would likely result in Tommy Kahnle taking over the ninth-inning duties for Detroit.

Vest came on with a three-run lead to protect and immediately served up a solo homer to Jordan Westburg. That’s as close as the Orioles would get though as the 30-year-old right-hander retired each of the next three hitters in order — including a strikeout of Cedric Mullins to end it. Vest has been a major weapon out of the Tigers’ bullpen this season, posting a 1.89 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and a 34/9 K/BB ratio over 33 1/3 innings to go with 11 saves and five victories.

Vest was called upon to replace Tarik Skubal with runners at the corners and two outs in the eighth inning with the Tigers clinging to a one-run advantage. He then stayed on to work a scoreless ninth to close it out. On the season, the 30-year-old right-hander boasts a 1.72 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 32/9 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings to go along with nine saves and five victories.

He allowed a two-out single to Maikel Garcia who advanced to second base on defensive indifference and then an RBI single to Drew Waters that pulled the Royals to within two runs. Vest’s save was his fifth of the year. While Tigers manager A.J. Hinch isn’t going to name a set closer, Vest is the preferred Tigers reliever for fantasy purposes at the moment. Tommy Kahnle’s last save came on April 30. Since then, Vest has two saves and two wins while mostly being used in the ninth inning. He has a 1.66 ERA and 25/7 K/BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings this year.
