Winans has been summoned to augment New York’s long relief depth with Brent Headrick landing on the injured list earlier this week. The 30-year-old righty has posted a bloated 8.68 ERA across 9 1/3 innings (three appearances, one start) this season at the major-league level.

A corresponding move will be announced by the Yankees prior to Sunday’s game against the Phillies. Winans threw the final three innings of Saturday’s loss to Philadelphia, so New York needs a fresh arm for the bullpen.

Winans will take the ball on Saturday for a spot start against Atlanta with the Yankees dealing with injuries to Max Fried (blister) and Cam Schlittler (bicep). The 29-year-old righty has allowed seven runs — six earned — over 6 1/3 innings (two appearances, one start) this season in the big leagues. He’s not a recommended streaming option for fantasy purposes.

Winans is sent down to make room for Marcus Stroman, with Stroman scheduled to come off the injured list from his knee injury to start Sunday’s game against the Athletics. Winans will likely be up and down for the rest of the season/his career.

Winans gave up five hits, including a solo home run to Gavin Lux. He was bailed out by reliever Ian Hamilton, who came on to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, preventing any additional damage after allowing a run-scoring single to Elly De La Cruz. He struck out one, didn’t hand out a free pass and hit two batters. He’s likely headed back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with Marcus Stroman (knee) set to rejoin New York’s rotation mix in the coming days after his final rehab outing.

Making his Yankees debut, Winans will start against the Reds tonight and then probably return to Triple-A. The 29-year-old had a 7.20 ERA in eight big-league starts for the Braves between 2023 and ’24. He was 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA for the RailRiders.

The 29-year-old also struck out eight and walked one on the day. He’s carrying a 0.61 ERA in 44 innings at Triple-A and could get an MLB start if Ryan Yarbrough can’t rebound from his poor outing last week. Yarbrough also has experience as a bulk reliever if the Yankees wanted to keep both pitching regularly.
