Murphy relayed that Woodruff told him he doesn’t feel like he’s injured, that’s it’s just a dead arm situation. It sounds like a trip to the injured list could be in store for the 33-year-old hurler. Expect the Brewers to provide an update on his status after that evaluation.

He’d allowed one hit and struck out two before leaving. Woodruff showed an alarming amount of diminished velocity, with his four-seamer averaging just 85.4 mph while topping out at 86.9 mph. Manager Pat Murphy said that Woodruff wasn’t feeling any pain, but that getting him out of the game felt like the right move. If this dead arm sort of issue leads to an IL stint, hopefully it won’t be a long one.

Despite very diminished velocity, Woodruff still acts like a power pitcher out there. In the first inning, he only threw four-seam fastballs. Yet, they sat near 91 mph. It was only those fastballs and a smattering of sinkers during his first trip around the Pirates’ order. The only problem was that he didn’t have his best command here. So, mixing up lots of low-90s fastballs that mostly wound up in the heart of the zone did not yield good results. His velocity did tick up as the game wore on, so there’s no cause for alarm with his slow start. Also, it’s worth noting that this was the third time in five starts so far this season where he was pulled before reaching 75 pitches. He wasn’t pitching particularly poorly in any of those either, so it may just be a maneuver by the Brewers to manage his workload. He’s scheduled to face the Diamondbacks next time out.

Woodruff was outstanding on Saturday, holding the Marlins to one run on three hits and a walk over seven frames. He tossed 70 of 92 pitches for strikes and struck out four batters on 12 whiffs despite sitting 91.8 mph on the fastball, down from his season average of 92.5 mph. The 33-year-old right-hander has made it work, posting a 3.42 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 20/4 K/BB ratio across 23 2/3 innings. He’ll look to keep it going against the Pirates in Milwaukee on Friday.

He left with a one-run lead that disappeared right away in the seventh. Woodruff surely would have liked to have still been pitching at that point; it took him just 70 pitches to get his 18 outs. His velocity is creeping back up some, and signs point to him being plenty valuable in mixed leagues while healthy. He’ll face the Marlins next.

Woodruff also struck out four and walked two while posting a 22 percent whiff rate and 62 percent strikes overall. Woodruff’s four-seam velocity was down almost two mph in his one, but he actually started the game averaging under 90 mph on the four-seamer and was up around 92 mph at the end of the game. Woddruff was able to get ahead with his four-seamer, and his changeup missed plenty of bats in this one, so we wouldn’t worry too much about the mediocre results.

Woodruff’s first start of 2026 should be considered a success. He generated a decent eight swings-and-misses while striking out six, and the only two runs he allowed came on solo homers in his first and final frame, respectively. Woodruff is a pitcher who should be in lineups for his scheduled bout against the Red Sox next week, and as long as he can stay healthy, there’s a good chance he’ll be one of the better fantasy options in the NL this season.

Woodruff gets the ball for Milwaukee’s fifth game of the regular season to open a three-game series against Tampa Bay at American Family Field. There were some questions earlier this spring whether the veteran fantasy stalwart would be ready for Opening Day coming off a lat strain. The 33-year-old appears ready to roll and will pitch at the back-end of the Brewers’ rotation.

The 33-year-old right-hander struck out four batters on the evening while issuing one walk. The Rangers scratched out a run against him in the third inning, then Woodruff returned for the fourth and allowed solo homers to Ezequiel Duran and Mark Canha before exiting. Overall he got eight swings and misses on 62 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 31 percent. His average fastball velocity was just 91.6 mph (-1.5 mph) in this one, which can be expected after a long layoff. His status for Opening Day remains “up in the air” and there have been rumblings that he could require six days between starts for the duration of the 2026 season.

The veteran was encouraged by being able to throw four “ups,” and he felt like this stuff performed close to how he wanted to, but he admitted that his status for Opening Day is still “up in the air.” His “main goal is the end of the year,” so he and the Brewers will not push for him to be on the mound to start the season if he’s not clearly ready to do so. With Quinn Priester (nerve issue) likely starting the season on the IL, that could mean there are three rotation spots for Kyle Harrison, Logan Henderson (elbow), Robert Gasser, Brandon Sproat, DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Shane Drohan to fight for. Woodruff also mentioned that he may need to pitch on six days’ rest throughout the season, which means the team may need to use spot starters throughout the year to keep him on schedule.

Given how little we knew about Woodruff’s spring progression as he returns from a lat strain, it was pretty encouraging that he averaged 92.0 mph with his fastball, even if that was still 1.1 mph lower than his 2025 average. The 33-year-old struck out three while giving up a pair of hits and one free pass. Woodruff looks like he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season, but fantasy managers should prepare for some precautions from the Brewers in the early portion of 2026.

There was some back-and-forth earlier this spring regarding Woodruff’s uncertain availability for Milwaukee’s season opener but it sounds like he’s on track to avoid a trip to the injured list. The 33-year-old veteran was excellent upon returning from shoulder surgery last year before a lat injury knocked him out for the postseason. There could be some workload limitations in the early portion of the year, but Woodruff appears ready to go.

We have to admit, we’re a bit confused. On Monday, Woodruff gave an interview where he said that he wasn’t sure if he would be ready for Opening Day. Perhaps he meant that literally, and the Brewers are suggesting he’ll start one of the other games to begin the season? All we know for sure is that Woodruff will throw a live batting practice session on March 1 and then begin his game progression. If all goes well, it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to be ready for Opening Day, but considering he ended last season with a lat injury and began last season by recovering from shoulder capsule surgery, there is plenty of risk here.

Woodruff said he had a normal offseason while waiting for his lat strain to heal, but that it was still decided to bring him along a little slowly this spring. He threw 25 pitchers to hitters today, which is basically what the rest of the league’s starters are doing in game action, so he doesn’t seem far behind. He did indicate that he was likely in line for one more sim game before pitching in a spring game.

A healthy Woodruff seems like a bargain at this rate, especially if his velocity improves some in his second year back from shoulder surgery. Regardless, just the one-year obligation makes this a clear winner. The Brewers are currently looking at a rotation of Freddy Peralta, Woodruff, Quinn Priester and Jacob Misiorowski, with Chad Patrick, Logan Henderson, Robert Gasser, Tobias Myers and maybe Andy Ashby in the mix for the fifth spot.

McCalvy adds that Woodruff hasn’t progressed to playing catch as he recovers from a lat strain and won’t be an option for Milwaukee for the best-of-seven series against the Dodgers. The 32-year-old veteran could potentially be ready to contribute in the World Series, if the Brewers manage to make it past the defending champions. There should be an additional update on his status for a potential Fall Classic matchup at some point in the coming days.

Woodruff finished the season on the IL with a lat strain and has yet to resume throwing, so an NLCS return would still seem to be a long shot. The good news is that Woodruff’s shoulder surgeon deemed the current problem separate from the previous injury.

It’s a massive development for the playoff-bound Brewers with manager Pat Murphy adding that Woodruff has been diagnosed with a moderate strain and that it’s too early to determine his postseason availability. The 32-year-old veteran will undergo further evaluation after suffering the injury earlier this weekend during a routine bullpen session. He’s in clear jeopardy of missing the playoffs with his potential absence likely thrusting some combination of top prospect Jacob Misiorowski and left-handers Robert Gasser and Jose Quintana (calf) into a more prominent roles at the outset of October behind Freddy Peralta and Quinn Priester.

Woodruff was dialed in despite being pulled from this game early. The Angels could only muster up three total base runners Woodruff retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. He worked the outer edge beautifully with his mix of cutters, four-seam fastballs, and sinkers with that cutter especially shining. It forced eight swings-and-misses alone and those three offerings combined to account for 91% of all the pitches he threw. It’s been a treat to watch him reinvent himself this season after returning from injury and it makes sense that the Brewers would limit him – he threw just 69 pitches here – before the playoffs. He’s scheduled to face the Padres next Monday in what will likely be another abbreviated outing.

Woodruff needed a bounce-back outing after giving up five earned runs in each of his least two outings. He delivered on Saturday against the Pirates with six shutout frames. He scattered two hits and did not walk a batter while collecting eight strikeouts. The 32-year-old right-hander will look to keep it going when he takes a 3.32 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and a 74/14 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings into a start against the Cardinals in Milwaukee on Friday.

Woodruff gave up 10 hits, walked two and struck out three. The 32-year-old right-hander has now had back-to-back subpar performances with at least five runs allowed in each of his last two starts. Woodruff was excellent in his first eight starts with a 2.47 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Pirates on the road next weekend.

All of the runs came in the sixth, which included three singles, a HBP and a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homer. Those runs all came with none out, and Woodruff bounced back to retire two in a row, but he was still pulled with the bases empty and Adrian Del Castillo coming up. Woodruff allowed just one hit over the first five innings and wound up with eight strikeouts in improving to 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA. He’ll get the Blue Jays next.

Woodruff is fine physically, but the Brewers want to give him and rookie Jacob Misiorowski an extra day of rest before taking the ball early next week. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace has looked sharp since returning from shoulder surgery with a strong 2.47 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 55/11 K/BB ratio across 43 2/3 innings (eight starts). It’ll be Chad Patrick drawing the starting assignment for Sunday’s series finale against the Giants.

On the plus side for fantasy managers, Woodruff punched out six batters on the night while issuing three walks. The Cubs scratched out a pair of runs against him in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Owen Caissie and an RBI double by Michael Busch. They added another on an RBI knock by Nico Hoerner in the fifth. Woodruff got 13 swings and misses on 94 pitches in the game — seven on his changeup — while registering a CSW of 30 percent. The 32-year-old hurler will look to bounce back as he carries a 2.47 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and a 55/11 K/BB ratio (43 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s showdown against the Giants.

Of course, it wasn’t announced ahead of time. Woodruff, making his seventh start since returning from shoulder surgery, was lifted after throwing 65 pitches in four scoreless innings against the Pirates. It was his first start on four days’ rest.

Woodruff struck out four and walked two while throwing 65 of his 40 pitches for strikes. The Brewers had a 6-0 lead when Woodruff was removed from the game, so perhaps they were just being cautious with him, given how much time he’s missed over the last two years. It’s a situation to monitor.

Things did not look great for Woodruff early as Juan Soto and Starling Marte each took him deep for solo shots in the first two innings. After that, he only allowed one more hit and retired the final 10 batters he faced as his squad pulled ahead. He got there by throwing 80% combined fastballs and sinkers with pinpoint command. Back from injury and seemingly as good as ever, this was the first time Woodruff has completed seven innings since September 11th, 2023 and he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his six starts so far this season. It’s incredible to watch him be so fastball dominant and effective while he’s lost about three full ticks of velocity compared to before his long layoff. He’ll look to stay hot in his next scheduled start against the Pirates at home.

Woodruff tossed two clean innings before Robert Hassell III took him deep for a two-run blast in the third. Woodruff would settle in for three more scoreless innings, ending his day with eight strikeouts over six frames. He’s now allowed two runs or less in each of his five starts. The 32-year-old right-hander will take a 2.22 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, and a 37/4 K/BB ratio across 28 1/3 innings into a start against the Mets in Milwaukee on Friday.
