It remains to be seen if he’ll find his way onto the Cubs’ postseason roster.

Since being sent back to Triple-A, the left-hander has allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 13 innings while striking out 14 and walking four. He might still be a better bet in the Cubs’ rotation than Ben Brown.

Wicks had been sharp in three appearances for Iowa since returning from injury, allowing two runs and posting a 16/2 K/BB in 11 innings. He’s not officially sliding into the Cubs’ rotation, but he’ll probably work multiple innings in what was scheduled to be a Jameson Taillon start Saturday, and he’s worth keeping an eye on.

He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out four. Wicks had been on the IL since leaving his May 24 start. The Cubs never said what the injury was, but based on how he exited that last outing, it didn’t seem to be arm related.

The move seemingly paves the way for the Cubs to acquire lefty Drew Pomeranz from the Mariners, as first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. That deal isn’t official yet, but Wicks removal from the active roster clears a spot ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

After giving up five runs in 9 2/3 innings in two starts for Iowa, Wicks was moved to the pen for his last appearances and pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts. He’s set to work in middle relief for now, though if he does go long this weekend, he might quickly be swapped out for a fresh arm.
