Atlanta claimed Joel Payamps off waivers on Monday, so they will send Wiles down to the minors to make room. Wiles has allowed three runs in his one MLB inning this season, but he has a 3.04 ERA in 112 2/3 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett this season.

Wiles, 27, was up for one appearance in June, allowing three runs in an inning. He’s worked mostly as a starter in Triple-A, amassing a 3.24 ERA in 105 2/3 innings, but the Braves want him available as a long man in case things go poorly again tonight.

Wiles will take Didier Fuentes’ spot on the active roster after posting a 3.33 ERA and 78/24 K/BB ratio in 81 innings (15 starts) at Triple-A. He threw one inning of relief for Atlanta earlier in the season, but they could certainly use him in the rotation now after injuries to Chris Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach. We’ll see if Wiles can stick in the rotation after the All-Star break.

It’s the first MLB callup for Wiles, a former Rays prospect acquired by the Braves this spring. The 26-year-old righty had a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings over three starts for Gwinnett. Expectations are that he’ll pitch tonight, though he might not start. The Braves have the opening tonight as a result of Spencer Strider’s injury.
