Weathers’ velocity was down on a a rainy, 42-degree day at Yankee Stadium, but the Royals still had no fun trying to hit him. Weathers had 14 whiffs on 43 swings, and the slider that he’s barely used this year finished off three strikeouts and had a 55 percent CSW on the 20 times he threw it. The win is Weathers’ first with the Yankees. He has a 3.18 ERA and a 36/8 K/BB in 28 1/3 innings over five starts. He’ll face the Astros on Saturday.

Nine of the 10 balls in play against Weathers were flyballs sent at least 295 feet. Six were hit at least 100 mph, three topped 110 mph and four turned into homers ranging from 396 to 445 feet. Really, he’s fortunate Yankee Stadium didn’t factor in any turn any of the shorter flies into homers. Plus, he was due for a night like this after going without allowing a homer in his first three starts (he’s given up a homer every six innings over the course of his career). Weathers dropped to 0-2 with a 4.29 ERA. He’ll face the Royals on Sunday.

Weathers topped out at 97 and generated 12 whiffs against the Athletics, including four each with his sweeper and four-seam fastball. (His “secondary” fastball.) He also walked none. It’s his best start in a Yankees uniform and cuts his season ERA to 2.81. Weathers figures to be a potential starter even in 10-team leagues against the Angels next week.

Weathers struck out four and walked three while throwing 59 percent of pitches for strikes. The left-hander got plenty of called strikes on his four-seamer and sinker, and his changeup missed bats, but it also missed the strike zone a lot. The pieces are still there for Weathers to be a solid starter in New York, but he’ll need to find the strike zone a bit more regularly. He could still be on the streaming radar next week at home against the Athletics.

The only run Weathers allowed was on a broken-bat single by Cole Young. The 26-year-old’s first start with the Yankees went well outside of that and some late trouble in the fifth, and he was consistently above 98 mph with his fastball. Weathers is going to have to pitch well to keep a spot in the Yankees’ rotation, but this was a good first outing. He has a friendly matchup on paper against his former organization in the Marlins.

Weathers closed out an extremely impressive spring by limiting a fully loaded Cubs lineup to just a Miguel Amaya homer over five frames out of the bullpen in relief of Gerrit Cole. The most important variable for the 26-year-old southpaw heading into the regular season is that he’s healthy after being limited by injury to just 24 starts over the past two seasons. He was a popular late-round sleeper in fantasy drafts this spring and will make his Yankees debut on Monday against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

Weathers struck out five, but he gave up two homers and six other hits. His spring ERA is all of the way up to 11.68 through four outings. Still, his rotation spot probably won’t be on the line until Carlos Rodón returns and then Gerrit Cole beyond that.

Two poor outings in a row have left Weathers with an 8.68 ERA this spring. Still, he did have a 37% CSW today, and he allowed two fewer hard-hit balls than hits. His velocity remains great — he hit 100.0 on the gun today — but, of course, if it was all about stuff, the Marlins wouldn’t have given him up for a package headed by the Yankees’ 15th-best prospect.

Weathers was perfect in the first before giving up three singles and two walks while retiring just one batter in the second. Chris Veach took over then and stranded both inherited runners. Weathers came back out for the third and struggled after a leadoff error, giving up four more hits before being pulled with two outs. In all, Weathers allowed seven hard-hit balls and generated only four whiffs on 26 swings. There’s no doubting his stuff, but we’ll have to wait and see when it comes to consistency and durability with him.

There are debuts, and then there are statements. Weathers’ first start in Pinstripes felt like the latter. The 26-year-old southpaw averaged a sizzling 98.5 mph on his four-seam fastball and topped out at a career-high 99.8 mph, a noticeable jump that immediately turns heads. Acquired from the Marlins last month, he offers short-term fantasy intrigue as he’s slated to open the year in New York’s rotation while Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Carlos Rodón (elbow) are sidelined. Injuries have limited him to just 24 starts over the past two seasons, so durability remains the looming variable. The velocity spike changes the calculus, re-affirming that Weathers is the type of late-round arm that can dramatically impact a fantasy roster if his health cooperates.

The trade is now official. Weathers has shown flashes of big-time potential, recording a strong 3.74 ERA — 4.26 FIP — 1.21 WHIP and 117/36 K/BB ratio across 125 innings for the Marlins over the last two seasons. The 26-year-old southpaw has been limited to just 24 starts during that span due to injuries, including forearm and lat issues that cost him nearly five months this past season. He’s an interesting gamble for the Yankees — and a speculative late-round dice roll in fantasy leagues — as a high-upside rotation arm with Gerrit Cole coming off Tommy John surgery and Carlos Rodón working his way back from an offseason elbow procedure. He projects as a high-velocity impact reliever if they decide to move him to the bullpen at some point in the future. Meanwhile, his departure from Miami removes another obstacle from the path of top pitching prospects Thomas White and Robby Snelling.

Weathers, 25, was facing his former club, and he performed well. He did issue three walks, but he compensated with six strikeouts while allowing just three hits. It’s a very small sample of 15 innings and three starts, but Weathers has been excellent with a 1.15 ERA and 14/4 K/BB ratio in that time. He’ll get the Giants next weekend.

The Marlins went on to lose 14-1 tonight, but that was hardly Weathers’ fault. He struck out four and walked none while throwing 80 pitches in his second start back from the IL. The only damage came on Kyle Tucker’s homer in the first. He’ll likely make his next start in San Diego on Monday.

He allowed two hits, walked none and struck out three in the breezy 57-pitch outing. It’s possible he’ll get one more rehab start first, but he’s very close to returning from the forearm strain that’s had him on the shelf since the spring.
