Whitcomb was mostly playing third base in Triple-A, but he has some outfield experience if the Astros want to him out there against lefties on occasion. The 27-year-old is a lifetime .262/.341/.493 hitter in 314 Triple-A games, but he’s come in at just .173/.235/.253 in 81 plate appearances in the majors.

Whitcomb’s latest stint with the Astros wound up lasting just a few days while Isaac Paredes was away from the club on bereavement leave. The 27-year-old has put up some big-time numbers at the Triple-A level, and offers a ton of defensive versatility, but he’s struggled to gain any sort of traction at the highest level.

Whitcomb was hitting .308/.333/.577 with two homers and two steals in six Triple-A games, though he had struck out 10 times already. Perhaps he’ll get a start against a lefty while Isaac Paredes is on the bereavement list.

Both home runs were no-doubters, leaving the bat at 108.8 and 106.4 mph, respectively. They were his first two home runs of the season, but the 27-year-old is off to a nice start in Triple-A. Whitcomb has not put up good numbers in his 78 MLB plate appearances to date, but he has performed well in Triple-A and can play all over the field, so he should get another shot in Houston this year.

Whitcomb, 27, always faced an uphill battle at securing a bench spot on the Astros’ Opening Day roster. He wound up hitting .263 (5-for-19) with zero homers, four RBI, two stolen bases and a 7/2 K/BB ratio across 21 plate appearances during Cactus League play. He should get an opportunity with the big league club at some point during the 2026 campaign.

Whitcomb, fighting for a roster spot that doesn’t appear to be there on a suddenly-deep Astros infield, made the most of his WBC experience with a pair of homers off Jeff Barto and Filip Capka. Korea moves to 1-0 in Pool C and will take on Japan on Saturday.

Leandro Pineda caught Whitcomb’s sixth-inning fly to left that otherwise would have gotten just over the wall. The 27-year-old Whitcomb has hit 85 homers and stolen 62 bases in the high minors over the last three years, but he’s collected just 78 major league plate appearances to date and hit .178/.231/.260. Things don’t seem likely to get any better for him in Houston this year, though an Isaac Paredes trade would crack the door open for him at least a little.

The Astros need to clear a few spots on their roster by Friday to accommodate Thursday’s deadline acquisitions, though this move was actually made after Wednesday’s game. Whitcomb will return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level until his services are required again in Houston.

Whitcomb has oscillated between Houston’s bench and Triple-A Sugar Land over the last few weeks. The 26-year-old’s defensive versatility and power/speed combo make a ton of sense in a bench role, but it hasn’t come together for him at the highest level yet. He’ll continue to get opportunities since he’s just 26 years old.

Whitcomb got the call to replace Jeremy Peña after Peña was placed on the injured list, but he’s heading back to the PCL with Christian Walker coming off the paternity list. Whitcomb will likely be back before the end of 2025 in a reserve role.

Whitcomb gets the call to replace Jeremy Peña on Houston’s active roster after the starting shortstop hit the injured list earlier this week with a small fracture in his left ribs. The 26-year-old offers some defensive versatility, and has put up some monster numbers at the Triple-A level the past few years. However, he’s been unable to put it together at the highest level and carve out a semi-permanent role. The talent is there and he’ll continue getting chances to make it as a utility specialist.

Whitcomb has crushed Triple-A pitching this year but can’t seem to get a shot with the Astros. At this point, it feels like his lack of defensive home is more of an indictment on his ability to be an MLB-quality defender. It remains to be seen if/when he gets a real look with Houston.

Whitcomb has put up some monster numbers the last few years on the doorstep of the majors, but he’s been unable to parlay that success into production at the highest level. The versatile 26-year-old would make an intriguing utility specialist for the Astros and figures to continue getting opportunities. His latest chance comes in the wake of veteran infielder Brendan Rodgers hitting the shelf with an oblique strain.

The versatile 26-year-old has seen very limited action during his time with the Astros, going hitless in seven at-bats over four games. He’ll return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level. Luis Guillorme was promoted from Triple-A to take his place on the active roster on Saturday.

Whitcomb returns to the majors with Chas McCormick headed to the injured list with an oblique strain. The versatile 26-year-old utility prospect has been sizzling-hot at the Triple-A level in recent days, homering a staggering five times over his last three contests, which includes a three-homer explosion on Wednesday. It’s unclear whether he’ll play enough to matter for fantasy purposes, but he’s been one of the more intriguing prospects in the landscape for the last year or two. It wouldn’t be shocking if he stayed hot and manages to carve out a semi-regular role in Houston over the next few weeks.
