You will not be surprised to hear that the four free passes for Young are a career high. That’s not to say that he hasn’t gotten on base at an impressive clip, as he’s now the owner of a .341 on-base percentage; a solid number for anyone but particularly a player that turned 22 at the end of July. Young isn’t quite there yet in terms of fantasy stardom, but the talent is obvious. He could be one of the best second baseman in baseball in a few years.

Young absolutely hammered a homer that had an exit velocity of 113.9 mph and was originally listed as a 470-foot homer, but Statcast is apparently looking into it because that number has been deleted. Doesn’t matter, it was tanked, and it was a reminder that this is one of the top young talents in baseball; even if the numbers haven’t been spectacular yet. Don’t be surprised if Young is much more relevant over the final two months of the year.

That makes it a great night, even if the 360-foot shot to left was only a homer in Yankee Stadium and it’s copy in Tampa. He did strike out in his other three at-bats, so he’s hitting .234/.278/.299 through 32 games as a major leaguer. He’s quite likely to become a quality regular in time, but his spot is one the Mariners do need to be thinking about upgrading from at the deadline.

Young put the Mariners on the board with a double in the second inning to drive in a run before scoring on a home run by Cal Raleigh. He got on base again with a leadoff single in the fourth and scored his second run on a double by Raleigh. Young drew a walk in his final at-bat in the eighth to reach for a third time. The 21-year-old second baseman is hitting .250/.294/.313 with four runs and five RBI over his first 52 plate appearances.

Young also drew a walk. The 21-year-old was making his MLB debut, and he ended it with a fielder’s choice RBI to score Miles Mastrobuoni on a close play at the plate. That’s the first time a rookie has had a walk-off RBI in his debut since Samad Taylor back in 2023 for the Royals. Young is one of the best infield prospects in baseball, and is worth roster consideration in a wide variety of eligible formats.

Young takes over as Seattle’s second baseman of the future and will make his major-league debut batting eighth on Saturday night at T-Mobile Park against the Twins. The 21-year-old top prospect got off to an ice-cold start this season, but has been sizzling-hot of late at the Triple-A level, slashing .366/.467/.673 with five homers and four steals in 26 games since May 1. He doesn’t project as a potential fantasy superstar, but his hit tool and well-balanced skillset make him a high-floor contributor right away in deeper mixed leagues. He’s at least worthy of a speculative roster spot as he ascends to the majors.
