Yates has been relegated to middle relief duty for most of the second half and will finish his Dodgers debut with a massively underwhelming 5.23 ERA across 41 1/3 innings after posting 33 saves with a 1.17 ERA last year with the Rangers.

The Dodgers’ late-inning relief corps is getting massive reinforcements with Tanner Scott (elbow) slated to return on Friday and Yates getting himself back into the mix on Saturday. The 38-year-old hurler has been sidelined since July 29 due to pain in his lower back.

Yates threw a live bullpen session Saturday, and it must have gone well. The right-hander will need to make a couple of appearances before becoming a high-leverage option for the Dodgers — assuming no setbacks, of course — by the end of August.

Yates has been on the injured list since the end of July with lower back pain. Eric Stephen of SBNation reports that if Yates pitches well, the right-hander could begin a rehab assignment in the coming days. He should be a high-leverage option — assuming no setbacks — by the early portion of September.

Roberts noted that Yates, Michael Kopech and Tanner Scott are all expected to rejoin the bullpen before the month of August is through and that Yates will likely be the first of the trio to return. The 38-year-old hurler has been sidelined since July 29 due to pain in his lower back.

No word yet on how long Yates will be sidelined. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that he’s been dealing with a lower back issue recently. There isn’t a ton of time for him to make it back if he’s diagnosed with anything beyond a mild issue.

Bizarre. In 459 appearances as a major leaguer, Yates had never walked three batters. He hadn’t even walked two in any of his 37 games this year, but just six of his 18 pitches were strikes today. His velocity was fine, and it didn’t seem like an injury situation at all. After he left, Alex Vesia gave up a two-run single to take a rather unfair blown save. Vesia, though, escaped further damage, and the Dodgers wound up winning in the ninth. Yates and Vesia are the two healthy guys in the Dodgers pen worth rostering in the moment, and one fluky outing from Yates shouldn’t change much.

Tanner Scott came in to pitch the ninth with a four-run lead to protect, but Scott issued a walk and hit a batter in the ninth inning before departing with an injury. Enter Yates, who immediately issued a walk to Ryan Jeffers to load the bases and put the tying run at the plate. He was able to get Koby Clemens to hit a sac fly to make it a 5-2 game, and then James Outman made a spectacular catch to secure the save for Yates and give the Dodgers their first victory of the second half. Yates is probably worth picking up in mixed leagues with Scott expected to miss some time.

Yates has his second save of the season, and second as a member of the Dodgers after signing in the offseason. The 38-year-old didn’t allow a hit while throwing 9-of-15 pitches for strikes. This was Yates’ first chance at a save since May 5, and fantasy managers shouldn’t count on too many more over the summer.

Yates rejoins the Dodgers’ high-leverage mix after missing three weeks recovering from a hamstring strain. The 38-year-old former closer could wind up getting some save chances with lefty Tanner Scott continuing to struggle in the role.

It’s an encouraging development for the 38-year-old hurler who has been sidelined since mid-May due to a right hamstring strain. The Dodgers haven’t given any word on any sort of timeline for when he may be ready to return, but the fact that he’s back up on a mound again so soon bodes well for his outlook.

The positive news for fantasy purposes is that Yates isn’t dealing with anything arm-related. The 38-year-old veteran high-leverage specialist is likely facing a multi-week absence. He’s set to undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status at some point in the near future.

Yates was clearly uncomfortable while leaving with a trainer during Saturday’s relief appearance against the Angels. That’s bad news for the Dodgers, as manager Dave Roberts told reporters after the game that this will likely result in a stint on the injured list for the 38-year-old, who is headed for an MRI later this weekend to determine the severity. The Dodgers will likely make that roster decision Sunday, and it’s yet another injury loss to a Los Angeles pitching staff that has seen more than their fair share of them over the last two seasons.

It’s unclear what the injury was at this point, but Yates was removed from the game and exited with a trainer. The right-hander will likely undergo some sort of testing before his status is updated before Sunday’s game against the Angels.

The Dodgers didn’t think they’d need a closer tonight, but Yoendrys Gomez turned a 7-1 lead into a 7-4 game in the eighth. Tanner Scott took over to get the final two outs of that inning, setting up Yates to pitch the ninth for the second time this season. He blew his previous chance back on Apr. 19. Yates figures to continue to set up for the most part.

With Tanner Scott unavailable after pitching in three of the last five days and Blake Treinen on the injured list, Yates got the save chance in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He gave up a double to Josh Smith before Adolis García took him deep for a walk-off two-run homer.
