As a team, the Red Sox were only able to muster five hits against Yankees’ rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler and David Bednar in the ballgame, with Yoshida the only player to tally more than one. The 32-year-old finished the season sizzling at the plate, which should do well for his confidence — and the Red Sox’ faith in him — heading into the 2026 season. He still has three years and at least $37.2 million remaining on his deal with the Red Sox.

Yoshida found himself on the bench in each of the first two games of the series as the Yankees rolled out a pair of southpaws, but he’ll finally get a chance to make a serious impact on Thursday night against rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler. Here’s the full lineup that we’ll see from the Red Sox in Thursday’s elimination game: Jarren Duran (LF), Trevor Story (SS), Alex Bregman (3B), Masataka Yoshida (DH), Ceddanne Rafaela (CF), Nathaniel Lowe (1B), Carlos Narvaez (C), Wilyer Abreu (RF) and Romy Gonzalez (2B).

Yoshida came off the bench to line a two-run single to right-center field on the very first pitch he saw from Yankees reliever Luke Weaver, putting Boston ahead in the seventh after being shut out by Max Fried for six-plus frames. The 32-year-old finished the regular season on a high note with a strong late-September surge at the dish and that confidence has clearly carried over into the postseason.

Yoshida had collected two hits in four straight games now, putting him at .260/.302/.376 for the season. For some reason, he just loves facing the Blue Jays. Since arriving in MLB in 2023, he’s batted .361 with four homers in 25 games against Toronto.

Yoshida contributed a sacrifice fly during the Red Sox’ six-run rally off of Will Warren in the opening inning. He then singled in the third and fifth innings, but the Red Sox were unable to cash him in either time. With his two-hit night, the 32-year-old is now hitting .236/.285/.333 with two homers, 17 RBI and two stolen bases in 158 plate appearances on the season.

Yoshida drew a start in the leadoff spot in the Red Sox’ lineup as manager Alex Cora continues to search for consistency from that spot. He got the Red Sox on the board with an RBI single off of Brandon Pfaddt in the third inning, pulling them to within two runs at 3-1. That would be as close as they would get. Yoshida on the season is slashing an underwhelming .242/.294/.355 with two homers, 14 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 136 plate appearances.

Yoshida hasn’t provided a lot of reason for optimism this season, but tonight was impressive; both of his doubles were crushed at 109.7 and 107.6 mph. The first barely edged out his previous season-high EV of 109.6 mph. With Wilyer Abreu not returning soon and Roman Anthony possibly IL bound as well, Yoshida is going to remain in the Red Sox lineup most of the time, making him an option in deep leagues.

Yoshida finally found someone who he could be the ball in the air against. Unfortunately, it was Kody Clemens, who threw him a 52-mph high fastball in the ninth. Yoshida took it out to right for his first homer in 47 plate appearances this season. His other hit was a grounder, just like two-thirds of his balls in play since he came off the IL. He’s hitting the ball plenty hard enough, but until he adds some liners and pulled flies, it’s not going to matter much.

It’ll be Jarren Duran in left field, Ceddanne Rafaela in center, Wilyer Abreu in right and Roman Anthony at DH in this one. Yoshida hasn’t been abysmal at the dish, but he hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the ball either, batting .220/.238/.293 with zero homers, one RBI and one steal in 12 games since returning from the injured list. There’s a possibility Duran is jettisoned later this week at the trade deadline, but there simply aren’t a ton of avenues for Yoshida to play regularly if he winds up sticking around.

The Red Sox keep trying to force Yoshida into the starting lineup, and it could have led to disaster Sunday, with Ceddanne Rafaela struggling at second base and Yoshida and Jarren Duran bumping into each other on a play in the outfield (the ball was caught anyway). They’re back using their best alignment tonight; Rafaela is playing center, Duran is in left and Roman Anthony is DHing.

Yoshida will make his first appearance in left field this season after making five straight starts at DH since returning from the injured list. The move shifts top prospect Roman Anthony, who is dealing with an illness, to DH for Sunday’s series finale at Wrigley Field.

The Red Sox have faced only righties since Yoshida was activated, and Yoshida was in the lineup for four of his first five games on the roster. Today, though, the Red Sox are sticking with all of their younger outfielders and putting Roman Anthony at DH.

Yoshida will finally make his season debut after missing the first three-plus months of the season due to offseason shoulder surgery. The 31-year-old is expected to be the designated hitter for most of his appearances, but also could see time at first base and in the corner outfield. He’s not an elite fantasy option, but there’s enough here for him to be a helper in a few categories for those in need.Ceddanne Rafaela will get Wednesday off with Yoshida back.

Yoshida is wrapping up a minor league rehab assignment and figures to be ready to make his season debut on Wednesday at Fenway Park. The 31-year-old’s defensive limitations complicate Boston’s crowded playing time picture at multiple spots, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they decided to move on from one of their more prominent outfielders in the coming weeks.

Yoshida is currently playing at Triple-A Worcester on a rehab assignment, but should return to Boston for his season debut at some point next week before the All-Star break. He figures to occupy the DH spot against right-handed pitching and could even factor into their first-base mix.

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that the “Red Sox are planning to get Yoshida some ‘light work’ pregame at first base during his rehab assignment.” The team is not switching his position and still views Yoshida as an outfielder or designated hitter. Still, while he’s with Worcester, they are seeing how he responds to the new position to see if it gives him added versatility. Considering Yoshida is just 5'8" and has not played first base before, we would imagine it’s a long shot that he’d get into a game at the position.

No word yet on where that assignment will begin, but Yoshida is expected to need plenty of at-bats before he’s an option to join the Red Sox’ lineup. If all goes according to plan, it sounds like they’re hopeful he’ll be ready to return coming out of the All-Star break.

The 31-year-old has missed the entirety of the season thus far due to a right shoulder labral injury. He’s closing in on a minor league rehab assignment though, where he’s going to need plenty of at-bats to get up to speed. Yoshida is expected to serve as the Red Sox’ regular designated hitter upon his eventual return from the IL.

Cora didn’t put any specific timetable on that statement, but it sounds like Yoshida is finally getting closer to live game action. The 31-year-old is expected to see most of his time at designated hitter upon his eventual return to the Red Sox’ lineup.

With Rafael Devers no longer occupying the DH spot, Yoshida is all of a sudden on the cusp of returning after spending the first three months of the season on the injured list recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. The main issue that prevented his return earlier this year was that he wasn’t making progress with his throwing program, but that’s no longer an obstacle if he’s going to DH exclusively. The 31-year-old is worthy of a speculative roster spot in extremely deep mixed leagues based on his track record and he figures to hit towards the middle of Boston’s lineup.

Yoshida’s bat is fine, as he showed this spring, but he hasn’t been able to play the outfield because of the shoulder. He’ll probably rejoin the Red Sox in the second half, but unless Rafael Devers reverses course and becomes a first baseman, there probably won’t much for Yoshida to do.
