Oviedo strengthens the back end of Boston’s rotation and still possesses the kind of mid-rotation upside that surfaces whenever he’s actually in the strike zone. The 27-year-old righty owns a respectable 4.24 ERA and 20.2 percent strikeout rate across 361 major-league innings since 2020. He represents a worthwhile gamble for the Red Sox since he’s under team control through 2027 and allows them to bolster their pitching staff without sacrificing any of their established big-league outfield depth. He could make a real leap if he throws strikes more consistently given the quality of his arsenal, but he’s unlikely to be rostered in most fantasy formats to open next season.

Samaniego heads to Boston just weeks after being added to Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster to shield him from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. The 26-year-old lefty has yet to pitch above Double-A, but he impressed across four levels last season with a 3.99 ERA and 44/11 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings. He’ll likely open next year in the upper minors and could pitch his way to Fenway Park before season’s end if the command and swing-and-miss stuff continue to trend upward.

Criswell loses his spot on Boston’s 40-man roster with the club acquiring pitchers Johan Oviedo and Tyler Samaniego from the Pirates. The 29-year-old righty has posted a respectable 4.00 ERA across 117 innings over 33 appearances (19 starts) for the Red Sox over the past two seasons. He figures to attract some interest on waivers as a serviceable emergency innings-eater in a swingman-type role.

The Red Sox are getting lefty Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman, with righty Jesus Travieso going to Pittsburgh — leaving Oviedo as the only established major leaguer involved in the trade. Garcia’s path to an everyday role was blocked in Boston’s overcrowded outfield entering next season, but that obstacle disappears in Pittsburgh, where he should have a clear opportunity to play right away. “The Password” appeared in five games for the Red Sox this past season after batting .267/.340/.470 with 21 homers and seven steals across 114 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. The deal makes a ton of sense for both sides as the Red Sox were able to bolster their starting rotation depth without sacrificing any of their major-league outfield depth while the Pirates swap some pitching depth for a high-upside, power-hitting corner outfield prospect.

Passan notes that the Red Sox “are valuing Duran more like the seven-win player of 2024 than his 4-win version in 2025"; however, he also notes that Duran “has a ton of trade value because he’s still in his 20s and has three years of control.” Even if 2024 was an outlier, Duran has elite baserunning abilities and has been a solid run-producer atop the Red Sox lineup. With Wilyer Abreu proving to be a better defender and also being younger, it seems more likely that the Red Sox deal Duran this winter.

It’s an encouraging development that the Red Sox are confident in the strides Campbell has made from a physical development standpoint this offseason after the front office attributed his struggles last season to unexpected weight loss. The 23-year-old former top prospect is expected to transition to a full-time outfield role moving forward and should get some extra reps this offseason in Puerto Rico before heading to spring training. He’s the type of post-hype prospect that fantasy managers should be monitoring closely in the coming months to determine whether the additional weight helps him re-discover his previous form that made him one of the most intriguing young hitters in the game.

The 26-year-old right-hander spent the previous two seasons in the Cardinals’ organization. In 2025, he registered an underwhelming 5.12 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 62/24 K/BB ratio across 58 innings between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. He’ll function as added bullpen depth for the Red Sox.

The 29-year-old Capra, who debuted with the Blue Jays in 2022, has proven to be a fine Triple-A infielder, but he has hit just .133/.181/.188 in 142 career major league plate appearances. He probably won’t have much of a chance of making the Red Sox out of spring training.

Boston gets the postseason-caliber starter it needed without having to make a long-term commitment. The Cardinals will chip in $20 million of the $40 million (now $41 million after a trade kicker) Gray was owed in the final year of his backloaded three-year, $75 million contract. $10 million of that $40 million comes in the form of a buyout of a $30 million mutual option for 2028. Gray had a 4.28 ERA last season, but it came with a 201/38 K/BB in 180 2/3 innings. After dealing with some mid-career durability issues, he’s made 92 starts the last three seasons, striking out 587 hitters over 531 innings. He’ll join Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello in Boston’s rotation, with Paxton Crawford currently favored for the fourth spot and then Patrick Sandoval, Connelly Early, Payton Tolle and Kyle Harrison potentially battling it out for the fifth.

Fitts was a huge riser in the Red Sox system in 2025 after coming over from the Yankees a few years ago for Alex Verdugo. Fitts added velocity to his fastball and deepened his pitch mix, which put him on the big league radar; however, he battled injuries and posted just a 5.00 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 40/16 K/BB ratio in 45 innings for the Red Sox in 2025. Even in his strong minor league season in 2024, he posted a 4.17 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 111/37 K/BB ratio in 116 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He could be a potential back-of-the-rotation starter, but he has yet to show the strikeout upside and solid WHIP to be more than that.

Clarke is the Red Sox’s fifth-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, so this is a great get for the Cardinals. The 22-year-old posted a 4.03 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 60/27 K/BB ratio in 38 innings in 2025 in his first professional season, spent mostly at High-A. Clarke possesses an upper-90s fastball from the left side with a wipeout slider. He also has a curve and changeup that he can mix in to right-handed pitchers, and has all the makings of a high-end prospect. However, the Red Sox also have Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, Kyle Harrison, and Kyson Witherspoon, among others, and a team can only have so many pitching prospects with a realistic shot to crack the starting rotation.

MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo says it’s a $1.375 million deal. Wong had a disastrous 2025, hitting just .190/.262/.238 with seven RBI in 188 plate appearances, and there was thought the Red Sox might try to upgrade behind Carlos Narváez. Still, there just aren’t many quality backups available at the moment, and Wong settled for $600,000 more than the MLB minimum in his first year of arbitration. He might bounce back somewhat offensively, but he’ll definitely take a backseat to Narváez when it comes to playing time.

No real surprises here. Sandlin was a stone-cold lock to be added to Boston’s 40-man roster to shield him from next month’s Rule 5 Draft after recording a 4.50 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 107/40 K/BB ratio across 106 innings over 32 appearances (14 starts) between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester this past season. The 24-year-old righty will undoubtedly have a role in Boston at some point soon. Drohan is also one of the better pitching prospects in the organization but has been limited to just 27 appearances over the past two seasons due to injuries. Uberstine compiled a 3.58 ERA and 137/41 K/BB ratio across 120 2/3 innings over 25 appearances (21 starts) in the upper minors last season.

There clearly wasn’t another organization out there willing to trade for Winckowski, which left Boston with no alternative besides cutting him completely. The 27-year-old righty was limited to just 11 2/3 innings over six appearances this past season due to elbow inflammation.

The 29-year-old Gray has struggled to establish himself in the majors while hitting .207/.264/.369 in 122 plate appearances over three seasons, but he has made nice gains in cutting his strikeout rate in Triple-A the last two years. He has a solid glove, especially at third, and ample power, so he’s decent enough infield insurance. He also has one option year left, which the Red Sox will probably take advantage of.

It was expected that Lowe would be non-tendered, but the Red Sox needed his 40-man roster spot now. Lowe hit a fine .280/.370/.420 in 119 plate appearances after the Nationals released him and the Red Sox picked him up last season, but he was still, on the whole, a below average hitter for a second straight season, and no one is going to be interested in him at his projected $10 million-plus salary in arbitration. He’ll likely become a free agent and sign a modest deal as a starting first baseman for another team.

Houck is expected to miss most or all of next season following elbow surgery and has only two years to go before free agency, so it’s not an easy call, especially given that he really struggled before going down last season he’s due around $4 million in arbitration. Perhaps the two sides can work out a two-year deal with about a $4 million salary.

It’s pretty surprising that an arm like Guerrero’s made it through waivers. The 25-year-old might not make it in the majors because of his control issues, but he throws 97 mph, has a nice minor league track record and still has two option years left. It might be that his elbow problems scared teams off. He’ll stick with the Red Sox and, assuming he’s healthy, get an invitation to spring training.

The Red Sox had experimented with Campbell at both second base and first base this season, trying to find a way to get his bat in the lineup quickly by having him play a position of need. However, he struggled defensively at second base, and the constant position changes appear to have also impacted his offensive performance. The outfield is Campbell’s best position defensively, and the Red Sox could use his right-handed bat in a left-handed-heavy group. Of course, Campbell moving to the outfield full-time only pours more fuel on the fire of rumors that Jarren Duran will be traded this offseason.

It’s a small solace for Red Sox fans who watched their team get eliminated in the playoffs while Anthony was sidelined with an oblique strain. However, the 21-year-old phenom, who finished third in AL Rookie of the Year balloting, heads into the offseason fully healthy and look to establish himself as a true fantasy star next season.

Breslow specifically said that he felt that it made no sense for the Red Sox to look to acquire a number four or five starter, but wanted to find somebody who “can pitch alongside [Garrett] Crochet” at the top of the rotation. Considering the Red Sox were close to trading for Joe Ryan at the deadline, you’d have to assume that he remains a major target for them this offseason. The power bat could be a free agent like Pete Alonso or perhaps a trade acquisition, but it seems that the Red Sox plan to be active this offseason.

The Red Sox have a full outfield with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu. They also have Jhostynxon García and Kristian Campbell at Triple-A, so the 29-year-old Duran certainly seems like the odd man out. Nightengale reports that “the Red Sox believe that they need an upgrade over Duran, and that he needs a fresh start.” His name seems likely to come up in rumors all offseason as the Red Sox look to acquire an impact starting pitcher.

Guerrero, 25, has nice swing-and-miss potential, but he just hasn’t shown he can throw enough strikes to make an impact. He had a 4.15 ERA in 17 1/3 innings as a rookie for the Red Sox last season, but that came with a hideous 10/14 K/BB. Even in the minors, he walked 26 in 31 innings. Despite that, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll clear waivers, especially since he has a couple of option years remaining.

Criswell, 29, had a 4.08 ERA in 18 starts and eight relief appearances for Boston in 2024, but he spent most of 2025 in Triple-A and also missed some time. The thinking was that he might be bumped from the 40-man this winter, and that’s still a possibility, as the fully guaranteed contract would make it more likely that he’d clear waivers.

Story could have opted out of the $55 million over two years he had left on his six-year deal with Boston, though if he did that, the Red Sox could have retained him on a three-year, $75 million deal. Considering that the free agent shortstop pool is lacking and he wouldn’t have been eligible for a qualifying offer, Story might have gotten something like that $75 million for three years had he opted out. Still, he seems to like his current situation. The Red Sox are probably content, too, though they should be considering if they’d be better off with Story at second and Marcelo Mayer at short than with the status quo.

This turned out to be a much smoother process than last year, when the two sides couldn’t come to terms before arbitration requests were submitted. They did, however, do a one-year deal with an $8 million option before a hearing. This new contract again avoids arbitration and comes with a slightly smaller salary than the option, though we assume Duran is still getting his $100,000 buyout. Duran, a Super Two player last year, remains under team control through 2028. He could be a trade candidate this winter as a result of Ramon Anthony’s emergence.

Those two are joined by Steven Kwan in the outfield. Other AL winners include pitcher Max Fried, catcher Dillon Dingler, first baseman Ty France, second baseman Marcus Semien, third baseman Maikel Garcia, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and utilityman Mauricio Dubón. Semien getting the nod over Andrés Giménez seems like the biggest upset, though Giménez, who won the previous three years, did miss a bunch of time. Dingler over Alejandro Kirk also rates as a modest surprise.
