The backloaded contract will then pay Suárez $15 million in 2027, $30 million in both 2028 and ’29 and $35 million in 2030. There’s a $35 million mutual option for 2031 that includes a $10 million buyout. The structure saves the Red Sox quite a bit in the short term and also protects Suárez in the event of a lengthy lockout in 2027; he’d be losing far less then than his AAV of $26 million.

The deal was reported last week and is now official. Suárez is a groundball-heavy pitcher with tremendous control, which is a profile that should age well. Obviously, the team will hope to get his fastball velocity trending back up, but Suárez should fit nicely alongside Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray at the top of a rotation with both talent and experience. It remains to be seen what the Red Sox will now do with their rotation, which appears to have far more candidates than it has free spaces.

The Red Sox needed to free up a 40-man roster spot to sign Ranger Suarez, so they will swap Gray for yet another catching prospect. Baez was the Twins’ 12th-round pick in 2022 and hit .278/.371/.423 in 96 games between High-A and Double-A in 2025 with eight home runs and 54 RBI. The 24-year-old has a good approach at the plate with solid pull-side power and played all over the field at Arizona State, which gives him a little bit more value.

Halligan had a 4.40 ERA and a 66/27 K/BB over 57 1/3 innings, most of them win Double-A, while pitching in the Braves and Astros systems last season, but he’d recently impressed in Puerto Rico, amassing a 2.82 ERA and a 30/6 K/BB in 22 1/3 innings of winter ball. If the 26-year-old ever reaches the majors, he’ll be the second Halligan to do so; Jocko Halligan hit .281/.359/.403 for the Reds, Orioles and the Buffalo Bisons from 1890-92.

The 35-year-old hurler hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since the 2019 season. He spent the 2025 campaign toeing the slab for the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball where he registered a 3.60 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a 46/23 K/BB K/BB ratio across 50 frames. He’ll add bullpen depth for the Red Sox.

There’s a shroud of mystery and uncertainty swirling around Casas as he continues to work his way back from last year’s serious knee injury. The Red Sox acquired veteran slugger Willson Contreras to take over at first base, which likely limits the former top prospect to DH until further notice. It’s too early to write Casas off completely since he’ll be just 26 years old on Opening Day but there are more questions than answers at this stage of his career. There should be some clarity regarding his immediate outlook and role based on how he performs in Grapefruit League action. He seems likely to open the year back in Triple-A Worcester but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him make Boston’s season-opening roster, especially if the Red Sox decide to move either Jarren Duran or Masataka Yoshida.

Cora’s remark came in response to a question at Fenway Fest about whether the club would consider moving Rafaela to the keystone to alleviate its outfield logjam. The 25-year-old’s offensive production cratered in the second half of last season after a stellar opening act that featured 14 homers and 13 steals in 88 games. The constant shuffling between second base and center field may have contributed to the slide considering the Red Sox are going out of their way to dismiss the possibility of him playing second base, prioritizing Rafaela’s elite defense in center field after he earned the AL Gold Glove at the spot. From a fantasy standpoint, the added stability represents a positive development for Rafaela as he’ll have fewer variables to worry about heading into next season. However, losing second-base eligibility down the road would be a tough break for fantasy managers.

Cora added that he’s reserving the right to change his mind, but his initial lineup projection has the newly-acquired veteran slugger occupying the cleanup spot. The 33-year-old’s arrival solves Boston’s first base quagmire and it’s a notable development from a counting stats perspective that he’ll be locked into the middle of their lineup, regardless of whether Alex Bregman returns. He should have plenty of opportunities from a run-production standpoint with Roman Anthony and Trevor Story serving as top-of-the-order table-setters next season. The big question heading into the late stages of the offseason is where Jarren Duran fits into the lineup if he’s on the roster once spring training opens up in early February.

Crawford added that he’s fully healthy entering spring training after missing last season with knee and wrist issues that ultimately required a mid-summer procedure on his wrist. The 29-year-old figures to transition to a versatile swingman role, likely operating in long relief for the Red Sox next season, but he could be in the mix for one of their final rotation spots along with veterans Johan Oviedo and Patrick Sandoval in addition to top prospects Connelly Early and Payton Tolle.

Martinez spent 2025 with the Marlins, and he forged a 5.40 ERA in 6 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old has had success at the highest level with the Astros, and a good showing in spring training could see him win a low-leverage bullpen job.

Gonzalez was incredibly valuable for Boston last year, beginning the year as a bench bat and then emerging as a near full-time player. He slashed .305/.343/.483 with nine home runs and six steals in 341 plate appearances. He will likely be a valuable super sub for Boston in 2026.

Casas is a bit of a forgotten man in Boston, but the soon-to-be 26-year-old could be the favorite for DH duties as of now. Casas has had some unfortunate injuries in his brief career, including a season-ending knee injury last season, but he has an .800 career OPS in 251 MLB games. He was once one of the top prospects in baseball and still could have a bright MLB future ahead of him.

The Red Sox traded for Oviedo this offseason and figure to slot him into the back end of their rotation this season. Ovedio missed 2024 after Tommy John surgery and returned last year to post a 3.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 42/23 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings. He needs to be more consistent with his command, but Oviedo has the foundation to be a solid mid-rotation starting pitcher for Boston next season at a cheap cost.

Sikkema pitched for the Reds in 2025, posting a 4.57 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 72/31 K/BB ratio in 86 2/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. Interestingly, Sikkema was traded from the Yankees to the Royals in 2022 for Andrew Benintendi, who was once one of Boston’s best players. Sikkema has not panned out as the Yankees, Royals, or Reds had hoped, but he’ll get another chance in Boston.

This is the same salary that Crawford made in 2025 despite missing the entire season with knee and wrist injuries. The 29-year-old was valuable for the Red Sox in the first half of the 2024 season before fatigue and injuries led to a performance dip. He has experience as both a starting pitcher and a multi-inning reliever, so there’s a good chance he returns to being a key contributor for the Red Sox in 2026.

A 2019 third-round pick, Fraizer looked like a prospect at times with the Pirates before stalling out in Double-A for about three years. Last season, though, he was quite good in Triple-A when healthy, hitting .305/.361/.452 with 14 steals and a career-low 20% strikeout rate in 220 plate appearances. If he keeps that up, he might see some time in the majors at some point. However, Boston’s outfield figures to be one of the toughest in the league to crack.

The Cardinals are sending along $8 million. Since he received a $1 million bonus to waive his no-trade clause, Contreras is due to earn $42.5 million for two years or, if his 2028 club option is exercised, $55 million for three. After missing out on Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso, getting Contreras could be seen as a letdown for the Red Sox, but this is a truly excellent hitter who still might yet have a career year in him after being freed from catching duties. His OPS+s the last four years have ranged from 123 to 138, and he was still showing 95th-percentile bat speed at age 33 last season. This is also a nice little ballpark upgrade for him, adding to his fantasy value. He’ll probably be Boston’s first baseman on Opening Day, though he could do more DHing if the Red Sox trade an outfielder and Triston Casas proves more worthy of playing time than Masataka Yoshida.

Campbell is 6-for-28 with a 5/6 K/BB in eight games in Puerto Rico. The Red Sox have him focusing on the outfield, which wouldn’t seem to bode well for him making an impact early on next season. However, he probably has some work to do in Triple-A anyway after a rookie campaign in which he got off to a nice start but faded quickly.

Bennett qualifies as an interesting pickup for the Red Sox as the type of above-average extension pitching prospect their front office typically covets after posting a strong 2.27 ERA — 2.96 FIP — and 21.5 percent strikeout rate across 75 1/3 innings across three levels in Washington’s system this past season in his return from Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old southpaw figures to arrive at Fenway Park at some point next season as a back-end rotation arm. He put together an extremely impressive performance in the Arizona Fall League earlier this offseason, piling up 25 punchouts over 20 innings of work.

Rosenthal reports that “The Royals are under the impression Duran would cost them left-hander Cole Ragans,” who the Red Sox will most certainly ask for as part of a deal. However, Rosenthal also noted that “the Red Sox view the initial talks as more informal and exploratory, according to people briefed on the conversations.” These two teams have been circling each other for a while, but it doesn’t seem like anything is imminent.

Jackson hit .310/.402/.630 with 18 homers in 60 games as a Junior at Arizona State before the Angels drafted him in the eighth round this year. Time will tell if he turns out to be a legitimate prospect, but the Red Sox were at least able to get a little something for a player they didn’t want to continue to carry on the 40-man. Doing the trade now means the team has room to make a pick in Wednesday’s Rule 5 draft if it so desires.

Outfield Isaiah Jackson, an eighth-round pick in the 2025 draft, is the return, according to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo. Grissom is out of options and the Red Sox were going to need to open a couple of more 40-man roster spots, so a trade here seemed like a lock. Grissom didn’t appear in the majors last season and finished at .270/.342/.441 in 96 games for Triple-A Worcester. His contact ability still might allow him to resemble an adequate regular if he can stay healthy, but it’s been a challenge lately. He figures to battle Christian Moore and Kyren Paris for the starting job at second in Anaheim, with Moore perhaps sliding to third if both he and Grissom impress.

Arozarena went 9-for-20 with a homer and nine RBI in the 2023 WBC. Duran played behind Alek Thomas in center and finished 0-for-5. He’ll of course be a starter this time. In 2023, the other outfield spot went to Alex Verdugo, so a change is probably coming there. Perhaps young Rangers outfielder Alejandro Osuna could join the mix.

He’ll make $925,000 if he’s in the majors. Gamboa, 28, was the Dodgers’ ninth-round pick in 2019 and pitched in their farm system until last May, when he made his way to Korea. He wound up 7-8 with a 3.58 ERA and a 117/49 K/BB in 108 innings over 19 starts with Lotte. He’s always been able to generate groundballs, and he could prove to be of some use in middle relief.

Everything went really, really well in terms of recovery,” added Breslow. “He’s doing really well, stronger, he’s put on some weight. He looks more physical.” The 22-year-old former top prospect, who underwent wrist surgery back in August, is the odds-on favorite to open next season as Boston’s starting third baseman assuming they’re unable to re-sign veteran Alex Bregman. He batted just .228/.272/.402 with four homers in 136 plate appearances over 44 games, but it’s simply too small of a sample to draw any firm conclusions, especially given his prospect pedigree. He’ll enter spring training at just 23 years old and represents an interesting buy-low candidate for fantasy managers in dynasty formats.
