The 32-year-old right-hander struggled during Cactus League play, registering a 7.94 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a 7/4 K/BB ratio across 5 2/3 innings. He’ll attempt to get himself right at Triple-A Louisville before getting an opportunity to contribute to the Reds’ bullpen.

Lowder gave up four hits, walked four and committed two errors on pickoff throws, so it’s kind of impressive that he allowed just the two runs. Expectations are that the 24-year-old righty will have a spot in Cincinnati’s rotation with Hunter Greene sidelined. He should eventually prove to be a reliable third or fourth starter, but he might be a little too inconsistent to amass mixed-league value in his first full big-league season.

Richardson will open the year back at Triple-A Louisville after being removed from Cincinnati’s 40-man roster during the offseason. The 26-year-old righty posted a serviceable 4.54 ERA and 30/21 K/BB ratio across 37 2/3 innings over a career-high 34 appearances in the big leagues last year.

Stewart knocked Elly De La Cruz after he walked and stole second with two outs in the first. As it turned out, it was the Reds’ only hit in the contest. That’s pretty fun, but it’s also notable that Stewart is now 4-for-4 stealing bases this spring. We’re expecting him to be one of the year’s biggest bargains even if he doesn’t do much running, but 15 steals would be a very nice bonus.

Singer came in with a 9.00 ERA in five innings, but he fared well against the Giants’ road lineup, which featured Nate Furman leading off and Christian Koss batting third. With two strikeouts and two walks, he’s now boasting a 6/6 K/BB in nine innings.

The former top prospect opened the scoring in the ballgame as the smacked a two-run single off of Landen Roupp in the top half of the first inning. He struck out in each of his other two plate appearances. Bleday has had a nice spring at the plate, hitting .290 (9-for-31) with a pair of homers and eight RBI. It sounds like he could open the season in the strong side of a platoon for the Reds, getting a chance to do damage against right-handed pitching.

The 23-year-old right-hander struck out of a pair of batters in the contest — Harrison Bader and Drew Gilbert — and didn’t allow a free pass. The only baserunner against him came on a two-out double by Matt Chapman in the opening inning. Burns got four whiffs on 24 pitches on the night — three of those on his slider — while registering an elite CSW of 38 percent. His fastball velocity was in its normal range in this one, averaging 98.3 mph (-0.4 mph). He continues to be a priority target for many fantasy managers due to his massive strikeout potential.

The Reds are hopeful that it’s just a minor issue and that once Ferguson is shut down for a couple of weeks it will be alleviated. His absence will open a spot in the team’s Opening Day roster for someone else to win a spot — perhaps Sam Moll or Brandon Williamson to operate as a second left-hander out of the Reds’ bullpen.

Myers led off the second inning with a walk and then came around to score the Reds’ first run as Rece Hinds worked a walk with the bases loaded. He then singled in the third inning and ultimately dashed home on a wild pitch. The 30-year-old is making a strong case for a reserve role on the opening day bench, hitting .350 (7-for-20) with a homer and five RBI in Cactus League play.

The 28-year-old hurler struck out three batters on the evening and did not allow a base on balls. The Dodgers jumped on him for four runs in the opening inning on run-scoring knocks from Teoscar Hernandez, Freddie Freeman and Santiago Espinal. Lodolo then served up a two-run blast to Max Muncy in the third inning. He got five whiffs on 61 pitches in the ballgame, posting an underwhelming CSW of 23 percent. It’s been a rough spring overall for Lodolo as he sports a 7.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and an 11/2 K/BB ratio over nine innings of work. The stuff still looks good though, so hopefully he’ll be able to right the ship before the regular season begins.

McLain has been one of fantasy’s biggest spring storylines, batting an absurd .607 with five homers and 12 RBI through 10 Cactus League games. He also added his first stolen base of the spring in this one, just for good measure. The case for a bounce-back fantasy campaign is relatively straightforward as McLain spent the offseason adding muscle to his frame and is even further removed from shoulder surgery, which theoretically should result in more consistent hard contact. He’s a prime sleeper candidate at second base, going off the board right around pick 200 overall, on average, in most drafts this spring.

Abbott served up a homer to – on a cutter that he’s been working on this spring. He generated six swinging strikes and finished with a respectable 30 percent CSW in his latest spring tune-up, building up his pitch count to 69 (42 strikes) in the process. The 26-year-old southpaw will take the ball on Opening Day for the Reds against the Red Sox at Great American Ball Park on March 26.

Friedl took Colorado reliever Jimmy Herget deep with two outs in the fourth inning for his first big fly of the spring. The 30-year-old centerfielder remains Cincinnati’s primary leadoff option ahead of middle-of-the-order forces Elly De La Cruz and Eugenio Suárez heading into the regular season, which makes him a decent OF5 option in shallow mixed leagues.

Greene said last week that he knew he had bone chips, and it turns out that he was correct. He also seems to be correct that there is no damage to his UCL, but we will know more on Wednesday when he goes to get his elbow scoped. Assuming there is no other issue apart from the loose bodies, Greene could return by the middle of June. We tend to gravitate towards the longer end of a recovery timeline, which means July feels like the best bet for when we could see Greene back on the mound for the Reds, if everything goes well in his recovery. That makes it nearly impossible to draft him in leagues without IL spots, but he can be stashed as a late-round pick if you have enough IL spots in your league. Rhett Lowder now looks like he’s going to get a chance to stick in the Reds’ rotation for a few months.

Both players were always seen as longshots to crack a crowded Opening Day roster, so there’s no real surprise here. Encarnacion-Strand, who was the Reds’ Opening Day first baseman in each of the past two seasons, will have to prove his health and produce at the Triple-A level before earning another shot in Cincinnati.

Lowder struck out four batters, all with his changeup, and wound up with 12 whiffs in the 59-pitch outing. He did give up seven hits to a lineup loaded with backups, though, with four coming in a four-run first. Lowder is in line to serve as the Reds’ fourth or fifth starter if Hunter Greene opens up on the IL. Before that, he was battling Chase Burns for one spot.

The homer was pulverized, leaving his bat at 119.6 mph. Of course, Hinds’ power isn’t in question, but the Reds don’t seem to think he has much to offer in the majors. Perhaps he could help as a platoon guy against lefties, but the Reds acquired Dane Myers to fill that role.

The Reds probably wouldn’t have brought in JJ Bleday if they didn’t think he was better than Benson, but Benson, who has a 1.050 OPS through 24 plate appearances, seems like the more interesting of the two from here. Both seem likely to make the team out of spring training, and one could start against most right-handers, assuming that the Reds don’t make Spencer Steer their primary left fielder. Given that Steer has started just once in the outfield thus far, it wouldn’t seem to be the plan.

Burns hit some turbulence in the opening inning, as a two-out walk to Nick Castellanos was quickly followed by a three-run blast from Gavin Sheets. The encouraging takeaway was the underlying stuff: Burns averaged 97 mph on his four-seam fastball and generated 11 swinging strikes, including nine on his slider alone. The 23-year-old flamethrower remains one of the most electric young arms in the game, armed with legitimate, stratospheric strikeout upside. The fact that he’s a work in progress is understandable since he reached the majors last season after just 13 minor-league starts. Outside the true upper echelon of fantasy starters, few pitchers offer this kind of strikeout ceiling.

Abbott draws the starting assignment when Cincinnati kicks off the regular season on March 26 against the Red Sox at Great American Ball Park. It’s his first career Opening Day nod for the 26-year-old southpaw, who gets the ball in place of injured Reds ace Hunter Greene (elbow). Abbott was a revelation last year, posting a sparkling 2.87 ERA — 3.55 xERA — across 166 1/3 innings over 29 starts. He’s a top-50 range starting pitcher in fantasy drafts this spring.

The run came right away on a Jonathan India homer leading off the bottom of the first, so the other five hits did no further damage. Lodolo struck out four today. His stuff is right where it should be, and he rates as a top-50 SP for 2026.

Steer played first base in his previous six starts this spring, suggesting that Terry Francona might prefer to keep him there and move Sal Stewart around at the beginning of the year. Really, though, if Steer is part of the Reds’ best lineup against righties — and that is questionable — it’s probably as the left fielder ahead of JJ Bleday and Will Benson. One thing seems clear anyway; if Steer is going to start at first base a lot of the time, there’s no way Nathaniel Lowe is going to make the Reds.

Rodríguez is the notable name here for fantasy managers, especially in dynasty formats after slashing .283/.336/.450 with 19 homers and 15 steals across 135 games between two levels to finish last year at Triple-A. The 21-year-old will require some additional seasoning on the doorstep of the majors but he’s a power/speed combo talent worth watching throughout the season. Arroyo is one of Cincinnati’s top prospects entering the year after batting .284/.345/.371 with three homers and 12 steals in 120 games last season for Double-A Chattanooga.

Abbott gave up flies with projected distances of 454, 448 and 444 feet today, though only one turned into a homer. His spring ERA is sitting at 12.27 after three outings, but that still doesn’t seem like any reason for concern. He should, however, give up more homers this year and prove worse for fantasy purposes.

McLain singled in the opening inning and scored on Elly De La Cruz’s gargantuan two-run blast. He then clobbered a two-run shot of his own in the second inning — a 380-foot (104.2 mph EV) blast off of Cole Irvin that made it a 6-1 ballgame. He also singled in the fifth and scored on Nathaniel Lowe’s three-run shot. McLain is doing everything that he can to make fantasy managers buy back in after his disappointing 2025 season — slashing an insane .647/.700/1.412 with four homers and 11 RBI in his first six Cactus League contests.

The dynamic 24-year-old superstar did his damage in the opening inning of this one, following a Matt McLain single with a majestic 438-foot (114.5 mph EV) two-run blast off of Cole Irvin that gave the Reds a 2-1 advantage. He also singled in the fifth inning and rode home on Nathaniel Lowe’s three-run blast. De La Cruz is off to a blistering start this spring, hitting .444 (8-for-18) with a pair of homers and seven RBI — though he has yet to steal a base.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out one batter on the afternoon. The Dodgers opened the top half of the first against him with a pair of singles, then used a ground ball and a sacrifice fly to move the runners around. Franco got three swings and misses on 49 pitches on the afternoon, registering an underwhelming CSW of only 18 percent. He’s expected to open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Louisville, but could be an option out of the bullpen at some point for the Reds.
