We assumed France’s potential ability to eat innings at a minimum salary would make him attractive to non-contenders, especially since he has an option year left, but obviously no one thinks he’s a very good bet going forward after he returned from shoulder surgery last summer. He’ll stick with the Astros and head to camp as a non-roster player.

Diaz won out after the Astros filed at just $3 million. The catcher hit .256 with 20 homers, 70 RBI and a 95/20 K/BB ratio over his 567 plate appearances with Houston in 2025.

Isaac Paredes had filed at $9.95 million in arbitration, with the Astros submitting an $8.75 million figure, so this is a nice middle ground. The contract also has a 2027 club option for $13.35 million. That will continue to make Paredes a hot commodity on the trade market this offseason.

Altuve was deemed ineligible because the criteria for WBC insurance coverage was not met. A statement from the MLBPA on Altuve’s behalf stated that the 35-year-old is “is obviously disappointed in this result, but he is looking forward to getting to spring training and preparing himself for a successful season.”

Teng spent most of last year pitching in relief in Triple-A and racked up an impressive 89 strikeouts in 57 innings. However, the Giants needed him as a starter late. He wound up with a 6.37 ERA in his seven starts and one relief appearance, but that came with a fine 28% strikeout rate and only two homers allowed in 29 2/3 innings. He certainly has the varied arsenal necessary to start, but he seems more interesting in relief as a potential setup man. Of course, the Astros might have a couple of fixes in mind that would give him more promise in the rotation.

France did great work as a 28-year-old rookie for the Astros in 2023, going 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA, but he lasted just five starts in 2024 before requiring shoulder surgery and he struggled with his command after returning last summer, pitching just four innings in the majors. He’s making the minimum and he has an option year left, so he should have suitors, even if he doesn’t offer much upside.

Cosgrove, 29, excelled for the Padres in his major league debut in 2023, throwing 51 1/3 innings with a 1.75 ERA, but with his velocity in decline, he’s given up 20 runs in 18 2/3 innings in the majors in the two seasons since. He doesn’t figure to win a bullpen spot out of spring training.

It remains unclear how Houston plans to incorporate Paredes into their infield mix with Christian Walker occupying first base and Carlos Correa stationed at third base. The 26-year-old slugging infielder’s pull-heavy approach seems like a perfect fit for Daikin Park’s favorable left-field dimensions and he projects as a 20-homer lock with everyday at-bats. The possibility of adding second base-eligibility is an interesting wrinkle for fantasy purposes but the Astros are committed to playing franchise cornerstone Jose Altuve at the keystone next season.

Espada added that Altuve will draw the occasional start in left field but the Astros are planning to keep him at the keystone next season. It’s undoubtedly a positive development for his long-term fantasy appeal as he’ll retain eligibility at arguably the weakest position group instead of transitioning to a full-time outfield role. The 35-year-old veteran underwent minor offseason foot surgery after hitting .265/.329/.442 with 26 homers and 10 steals over 155 games. He’s averaged 24 homers and 13 steals per-season for the last half-decade and has shown zero signs of slowing down. He’ll be an early-round selection in all fantasy drafts this spring.

A second-round pick of the Rays back in 2013, Unroe, who never has gotten the chance to play in the majors, has hit .246/.345/.353 with 58 homers and 155 steals in 4,219 plate appearances over 12 seasons in the minors. Last year was one of his best efforts, as he finished at .278/.397/.409 in 68 games as a part-timer for Triple-A Toledo. He also ended up with a 0.84 ERA in seven relief appearances, though that’s because eight of the nine runs he allowed were unearned.

With Carlos Correa now back in town and Yordan Alvarez likely spending all of next season at DH, the Astros have a surplus of infielders and likely need to trade one of Walker or Isaac Paredes. The Astros would like to keep Paredes and play him at first base, but they would need to find a way to trade Walker. The 34-year-old did hit 27 home runs last season, but he has two years, $40 million left on his contract and has been declining offensively over the last couple of years. The Astros would likely get back far more in a trade for Paredes, so the question will be whether Houston prefers to make essentially a salary dump trade or tries to bring back players of value.

This is interesting. Nelson returns to affiliated ball for the first time in nearly a half-decade after a remarkable 34-homer campaign for the Charleston Dirty Birds of the independent Atlantic League. The 28-year-old third baseman, who was a 15th-round pick of the Marlins back in 2016 and has yet to reach the majors, has spent the last four years bouncing around the independent leagues — including a stint in Mexico — but he’ll get a chance to show what he can do in camp with the Astros this spring.

Carlson represents the latest lottery ticket addition for the Astros as they throw metaphorical darts at their bullpen depth chart. The 27-year-old former starter has yet to reach the big leagues after the Mariners made his a second-round selection in the 2017 MLB Draft. The 27-year-old posted a serviceable 4.44 FIP and 78/36 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings over 45 appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Dodgers’ system this past season. He’s likely to wind up at Triple-A Sugar Land at the conclusion of spring training.

It’s the first time that hard-hitting 27-year-old backstop is eligible for arbitration. MLBTradeRumors.com projected that he would earn $4.5 million via the arbitration process, so it seems far more likely that if it does go to a hearing that Diaz would ultimately win out. He’s coming off of another solid offensive season in which he slashed .256/.284/.417 with 20 homers, 70 RBI and a 95/20 K/BB ratio across 567 plate appearances.

Arbitration isn’t kind to setup men in general, but Abreu has been good enough for long enough that he’s at least getting paid about one-third of what he’s worth. The 28-year-old had a 2.28 ERA in 71 innings for the Astros last season. He’ll be a free agent after 2026.

Meyers had been the target of trade interest at the beginning of the season with the Astros looking to bolster their rotation. After signing Tatsuya Imai to a three-year deal, the Astros may keep Meyers as their starting center fielder in 2025. After hitting .292/.354/.373 with 16 steals in 104 games, Meyers should be on fantasy radars in most formats.

Sánchez hit .199/.269/.342 in 48 games with the Astros after the trade deadline, adding four home runs and striking out 40 times. It was not the best first impression, but he will chance to get regular starts in the outfield with Yordan Alvarez playing slotting in mostly at DH in 2026.

Brown had a breakout season at age 27, posting a 2.43 ERA across 185 1/3 innings in 31 starts while punching out 206 hitters. He’s looking to establish himself as a legitimate ace with another strong season in 2026.

Peña ended the season on the IL with an oblique strain, but was tremendous when healthy in 2025, posting a .304/.363/.477 slash line with 68 runs scored, 17 homers, 62 RBI, and 20 steals in just 125 games. The Astros’ lineup should be a bit stronger next season with full seasons from Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes, which makes Peña a strong target in fantasy leagues.

Sousa pitched 50 2/3 innings for the Astros in 2025 before being sidelined with a low-grade flexor/pronator strain. The 30-year-old recorded a 2.84 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 59/15 K/BB ratio and will continue to be a key part of the Astros’ bullpen.

Roa was a second-round pick for the Reds in 2020 and was with the team until he hurt his shoulder in 2024, and the team tried to sneak him through waivers. The Marlins claimed him, and he pitched to a 2.83 ERA in 60 1/3 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville last year. Roa elected minor league free agency at the end of the season and will now try to work his way into the Astros’ bullpen plans.

Brown added that the club still views Matthews as a second baseman primarily, but he’ll get some time in the outfield moving forward after hitting .167 (7-for-42) with four homers and one steal during a brief 13-game late-season cameo with the Astros. The 23-year-old former first-round pick will increase his defensive versatility to battle for a bench role with the Astros in camp. He’s shown some flashes of power/speed combo upside, which makes him interesting from a fantasy perspective, but an inflated 27.9 percent strikeout rate across 498 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this past season suggests that he’ll battle some serious contact issues at the highest level.

Ort impressed for a time in 2024, but he opened 2025 on the shelf with a strained oblique and finished in there with elbow inflammation. In between, he had a 4.89 ERA and a 49/27 K/BB in 46 innings. There’s the chance he’ll bounce back and be an interesting sixth- or seventh-inning option, but that he’s 33 and out of options has the Astros moving on. Since he does make the minimum, we’d expect some team to pick him up off waivers.

Brown highlighted the newly-acquired pitching prospect as an “upside play” that they feel can be part of their rotation. The 26-year-old should have a relatively clear path to a rotation spot with a strong showing in spring training after compiling a serviceable 3.94 ERA — 4.00 FIP — 1.24 WHIP and 97/31 K/BB ratio across 96 innings over 23 appearances (19 starts) for the Pirates this past season. The addition of a two-seamer should theoretically help him neutralize left-handed batters after leaning mostly on his fastball and changeup combo against southpaws while shelving his slider almost entirely. At the bare minimum, Burrows is an interesting late-round lottery ticket for fantasy managers in deeper leagues on the chance that he makes a leap in the strikeout department working with Houston’s pitching development engine.
