VanWey and Trammell were both removed from the 40-man roster last week. They could both spend time in the majors in 2026, but in order to do so they’ll need to be added back to Houston’s — or another team’s — 40-man.

Zeglin missed all of last season due to injury after posting a 0.95 ERA and 90/16 K/BB ratio across 66 innings over 25 appearances between Low-A Myrtle Beach and High-A South Bend. The 25-year-old reliever is a textbook definition of a lottery ticket arm. Meanwhile, the Cubs receive $250,000 in international bonus money to close out the rest of the signing period.

Willingham, the first Amos to play in the majors since Otis retired in 1984, put up nice minor league numbers as a Nationals relief prospect, but he had a 7.11 ERA and just 16 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings during his major league stints in 2023 and ’24. He pitched last season in the Braves farm system, finishing with a 5.17 ERA and a 64/18 K/BB in 55 2/3 innings. He’ll likely spend most of next year in Triple-A.

This is the catching Carlos Pérez who spent most of 2015 and ’16 in the majors with the Angels and also got in 66 games with the A’s in 2023, as opposed to the younger Carlos Pérez who spent some time as a backup with the White Sox in 2022 and ’23. The 35-year-old has been a surprisingly strong Triple-A hitter for several years now, but he hit a modest .226/.293/.357 in 189 plate appearances when the A’s gave him a chance. He came in at .286/.372/.572 with 27 homers in 111 games for the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate last season. As things stand now, he’d be in line to compete with César Salazar for Houston’s backup catching gig. However, there’s a good chance the Astros will add a more established player.

Rome also notes that “Sánchez’s dismal performance after the trade deadline may impact his value.” The 28-year-old hit .199/.269/.342 in 48 games with the Astros, while adding four home runs and striking out 40 times. In his career, Sánchez has a moderate .239 batting average, but that comes with a solid .181 ISO and 11.5 percent barrel rate. Perhaps somebody can turn that hard contact into more consistent results.

The Astros are reportedly open to moving Meyers for a controllable starting pitcher, and there may be some interest after Meyers hit .292/.354/.373 in 104 games with 16 steals while playing elite defense in center field. The Astros also have Jacob Melton and Zach Cole waiting in the wings in the minors and capable of filling Meyers’ spot if the Astros can acquire a good starter for him.

Katz spent the last five years as the White Sox’s pitching coach before being dropped earlier in the offseason. He’ll be replacing Bill Murphy in Houston after Murphy left to go to Pittsburgh, and he’ll presumably work in tandem with fellow pitching coach Joshua Miller. For what it’s worth, Katz and free agent Lucas Giolito are very good friends, if that’s something the Astros want to pursue.

Hader was quick to note that he’s clearly not throwing at near full intensity right now, so feeling normal is a bit different than feeling normal during the season. “It should be normal. Obviously, intensity gets up (in Spring Training), and we’ll see how that goes and how I’m recovering, bouncing back from that.” As of now, Hader is set to begin spring training as normal, but he does have some elevated risk in fantasy leagues due to the shoulder injury with no surgical fix.

Trammell’s contract is a split deal, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. The outfielder is a former top prospect who forged just a .630 OPS in 2025 but will get a chance to be a backup outfielder for Houston in 2026.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that it’s a $1.6 million deal that could be worth $1.7 million if he reaches 60 games appeared in 2026. The 29-year-old will be a middle-inning option for Houston this summer.

The Astros will roll the dice on Maldonado after he posted a lackluster 7.20 ERA across 25 innings over 22 appearances between the Athletics and Marlins over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old righty has missed plenty of bats in the upper minors but it hasn’t translated to sustained success at the highest level. He’ll compete for a spot in Houston’s bullpen next spring.

Allen was the starting shortstop for Atlanta in 2025, and while he posted just a .535 OPS in that season, he was one of the best defenders up the middle. The 27-year-old could be the starting second baseman for Houston in 2026, and he along with Jeremy Peña would be as good of double-play combination — defensively — as there is. It helps the Astros’ defense, but there’s zero fantasy value in Allen’s game.

Ullola will presumably be in the mix for a spot in Houston’s season-opening rotation after posting a solid 3.88 ERA and 131/78 K/BB ratio across 113 2/3 innings over 28 appearances (23 starts) this past season.

Urías came over from the Orioles at the trade deadline as Houston attempted to make a late-season playoff push. The 31-year-old lefty-mashing veteran offers some appeal in a reserve role for a contender, but he’s no longer an everyday regular at this stage of his career.

McTaggart adds that the procedure to remove fluid from a wound between his toes was relatively minor in nature and Altuve is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. The veteran franchise cornerstone, who dealt with lingering right foot pain during the final two weeks of last season, split time between second base and left field during his age-35 campaign, hitting .265/.329/.442 with 26 homers and 10 steals over 155 games. He’s averaged 24 homers and 13 steals per-season for the last half-decade and has shown zero signs of slowing down as he approaches his late-30’s. He’ll be an early-round selection in all fantasy drafts next spring as a top-five option at the keystone.

Arrighetti shouldn’t have any limitations at the outset of camp after managing to avoid surgery after additional imaging didn’t reveal any UCL damage. The 25-year-old former top prospect was limited to just seven starts this past season due to elbow inflammation and a fractured thumb. He’ll be an interesting late-round lottery ticket in fantasy drafts next spring since he’s a virtual lock to have a spot in Houston’s rotation.

Brown continued that they believe that Hader is “on course to come back and be there for Opening Day.” Hader was placed on the IL on August 12 with a shoulder strain and was unable to return to the mound. Bryan Abreu filled in as the team’s closer, but will likely return to a high-leverage stopper role. Hader was electric when healthy in 2025, but considering Hader opted not to have surgery this offseason, he does come with some elevated risk in 2026.

Paredes suffered a significant hamstring strain in mid-July and ended up making it back in late September, but clearly wasn’t moving around at full strength. Brown admits that, even now, Paredes is “about 65 percent recovered” from the injury, and the team believes he’ll “potentially” be ready by Opening Day. It sure sounds like he should’ve underwent surgery when the injury first occurred and not been rushed back onto the field. It’s a situation fantasy managers should monitor as the offseason goes on and it will undoubtedly tamp down his draft price.

The 24-year-old right-hander was absolutely brilliant in four appearances (two starts), hurling 14 innings of shutout baseball with a 0.57 WHIP and a 19/2 K/BB ratio. Hicks became just the third pitcher in the AFL since 2005 to throw 14 or more scoreless innings. It’s a stark contrast from the results that the Astros got out of Hicks at Double-A Corpus Christi in 2025 where he posted a 5.59 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and a 46/14 K/BB ratio over 46 2/3 frames.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Astros go about navigating their outfield. They’ve already indicated that Yordan Alvarez will see more left field time and that Jose Altuve is again slated to play both second base and left field. The club still has Jake Meyers in center, with breakout prospect Zach Cole and Jacob Melton also options there. Another big bat would be nice, but shutting out Smith, who could be greatly improved as a sophomore, might be a mistake, and Sánchez, if he isn’t moved, would probably do solid work against righties, even though he was a disappointment after being picked up from Miami.

Hader, 31, missed the final six-plus weeks with a strain in his left shoulder. Brown told reporters that the stopper was “progressing well” in his recovery. There’s a good chance Hander will be ready to roll for the start of the 2026 season, assuming no setbacks.

Alvarez is expected to be ready to go for the start of spring training after suffering an ankle injury in the middle of September that cost him the rest of the season. The 28-year-old also missed significant time with a broken hand, but when healthy, there aren’t many better offensive players in the sport.

The trio went unclaimed on waivers after being cut loose from Houston’s 40-man roster earlier this week to clear roster space. McCormick looked like a non-tender candidate, and his expected arbitration salary was evidently high enough to keep other teams from putting in a claim.

No real surprises here as Houston does a little housekeeping to clear space on their 40-man roster at the outset of the offseason. McCormick and Garcia are the most prominent names here and were virtual locks to be non-tendered in a couple weeks. León was one of the better prospects in Houston’s system before knee injuries derailed his development.

Lambert is returning to the U.S. after going 3-11 with a 4.26 ERA and a 104/52 K/BB in 116 1/3 innings for the Yakult Swallows of Japan last season. Prior to that, he’d spent his entire career in the Rockies organization, going 8-19 with a 6.28 ERA in 35 starts and 39 relief appearances over parts of five major league seasons.

The deal is now official. Pearson heads to Houston where he’ll be given a shot as a traditional starter after spending the past three seasons working exclusively out of the bullpen between the Cubs and Blue Jays. The 29-year-old former top prospect represents a low-risk reclamation project for the Astros who are in desperate need of additional starting pitching depth heading into next season.

MLB.com’s Brian McTaggert says fellow hitting coach Troy Snitker. is also out. Cintrón and Snitker spent the last seven years sharing duties for what has typically been one of the league’s best offenses. That changed this year with Kyle Tucker gone and Yordan Alvarez being limited to 48 games. The Astros ended up scoring 4.23 runs per game, placing them 21st in the majors.

Sullivan was a seventh-round draft pick in 2024, and he hit just .220 in 106 games this past season, split between High-A and Double-A. However, he has a tremendous approach at the plate, as evidenced by his .395 on-base percentage this season. When he gets on base, he can do damage, swiping 42 bases this season to go along with 17 home runs. In many ways, his profile is similar to Marlins outfielder Jakob Marsee, who had really intriguing fantasy tools but needed to find a way to make more contact. If Sullivan can continue to learn to do that, he could be an intriguing outfield option in an Astros organization that could use one.

McTaggart adds that both are under contract for next season and any speculation regarding the immediate future in Houston can be put to bed entering a critical offseason for the franchise. Espada guided the Astros to an 87-75 record in his second season at the helm, despite an avalanche of injuries to the pitching side of the ledger. Brown has been at the helm for the past three seasons with Houston missing the postseason this year for the first time since 2016. He’ll oversee a transitional phase for the organization as they try to navigate forward with an aging core and some up-and-coming talent, mostly on the positional side.

Garcia blew out his elbow for a second time in just his second start back from Tommy John surgery. He’ll miss all of 2026 and then be eligible for free agency after the season, so unless he and the Astros opt to do a modest two-year deal, he seems destined to be non-tendered.
