There’s probably another timeline out there in which Scherzer, not Justin Verlander, was the returning hero signed to fortify in the Tigers’ rotation over the winter, but not this one. Scherzer sort of got the better today of Tarik Skubal, who allowed one run while also getting 14 outs, but he had a little bit easier of an assignment against Detroit’s road lineup and the Tigers did end up winning anyway. Scherzer has looked really good this spring even without accounting for the fact that he only signed 12 days ago. There’s probably no way he’s giving the Blue Jays or fantasy teams six good months, but it looks like he’ll be quite valuable initially.

It was García’s first time throwing off a mound in Blue Jays camp since undergoing elbow surgery last August. The 35-year-old veteran reliever won’t be ready in time for Opening Day but he’s progressing towards an early-season return to Toronto’s high-leverage mix behind closer Jeff Hoffman and new setup specialist Tyler Rogers.

Gausman draws his first Opening Day nod since arriving in Toronto back in 2022 as he spearheads a loaded rotation that also includes marquee offseason addition Dylan Cease along with Cody Ponce, Max Scherzer and rookie sensation Trey Yesavage. The 35-year-old veteran previously made a pair of Opening Day starts for the Orioles and Giants, respectively. He’s widely-regarded as a top 25-30 range starter in all fantasy drafts this spring based on his durability and strikeout floor.

Hoffman fortifies Team USA’s high-leverage relief mix heading into a WBC semifinal showdown matchup against a star-studded Dominican Republic squad following a narrow win over Canada on Friday night. The 33-year-old Blue Jays closer recorded a career-high 33 saves last year in his Toronto debut. The move also marks the official end of Kershaw’s professional career after 18 seasons. Next stop, Cooperstown.

Varsho usually hit in the bottom half of the Blue Jays lineup last year, but he’s making a strong case to take over the second spot in between George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. this season. He’s hitting .452/.485/.935 with just one strikeout in 33 plate appearances this spring.

With his pitch count up, Ponce was lifted with the bases loaded and two out in the first. Michael Plassmeyer then retired Ryan Kreidler. Ponce came back out for the second and walked two more in a scoreless frame. In the third, he retired Brooks Lee and gave up a double to Matt Wallner before being lifted again. In all, Ponce threw 31 of his 59 pitches for strikes. The bullpen then followed his lead the rest of the way, and the Jays won the game 6-1 despite walking 10 batters in all.

The Blue Jays have been cautious with his workload this spring after a deep playoff run last year. Yesavage threw 35 pitches in his last outing, so the Blue Jays will want him to bump up from that so that he could potentially be up to 60 pitches by the end of spring training. He still has not appeared in an MLB spring training game, so it remains to be seen what the Blue Jays’ plan for him is at the start of the season, especially now with José Berrios potentially beginning the season on the IL.

For now, Bieber will “will stay on his regular throwing schedule for the next few days,” and then, a week from now, the team will access how he feels. The veteran has been battling forearm tightness since the end of last season. It’s a little concerning that the issue didn’t seem to get fixed over the off-season, which makes Bieber a real risk in fantasy drafts this year given his extensive injury history.

That’s not typically a good sign. The Blue Jays had previously said they were not concerned about a major injury for Berrios, but it’s hard to be as confident in that now. He likely wasn’t on fantasy radars anyway so this shouldn’t change that, but it may change value in the rest of the Blue Jays rotation. The team had wanted to be cautious with Trey Yesavage’s innings, but they may not have that luxury anymore. Of course, they could just move Eric Lauer into the rotation or piggyback Lauer and Yesavage. This also means Cody Ponce’s spot in this rotation is very secure, and he should be going higher in drafts.

Varsho ripped a Chase Stuggart cutter into the gap. He’s up to a 1.147 OPS in big-league camp. There’s plenty of power upside in Varsho’s bat, just don’t expect his .393 spring batting average to translate against big league pitching.

Seems like this is the reason that Berríos didn’t join Puerto Rico’s WBC roster for the quarterfinals. It’s hard to read too much into inflammation without missed time throwing — though Schneider did say Berríos won’t start today for the Jays — but it’s less than ideal for this to pop up a scant few weeks from the start of the season.

When manager Yadier Mollina announced earlier in the day that Berríos would join the team, we assumed this hurdle had already been overcome. Apparently not. Berríos is coming off an elbow issue that prematurely ended his 2025, but he’s looked fine this spring while allowing four runs in 10 2/3 innings over three outings for the Blue Jays.

The best hitter the Braves brought with them today was Ben Gamel. The second best was maybe Oscar Azocar. So, it wasn’t really a test for Cease and company. Cease has thrown just 4 2/3 innings to date, as the Jays have gone slower with their starters than other teams, but he’s looking strong. He averaged 97.8 mph with his fastball today, up from 97.1 mph last year.

Puerto Rico manager Yadier Molina told reporters Berríos has received clearance to pitch and will be available for the remainder of the international tournament. The 31-year-old veteran’s arrival provides a significant lift for Puerto Rico heading into the quarterfinals. They wrap up pool play against Canada on Tuesday night following three straight victories.

Freeman heads north of the border as additional relief depth for the defending American League champions. The 28-year-old righty was jettisoned from Chicago’s 40-man roster last June following five appearances for the White Sox at the highest level. He’ll presumably open the year at Triple-A Buffalo.

The 23-year-old felt elbow soreness in February and stopped his build-up. Given his injury history, the Blue Jays will “be cautious with [him], and this could potentially delay the start to his season, but he’s back on track now.” We’ll wait to see how he feels when he starts throwing at 100 percent before we get overly excited.

Yesavage has not yet pitched in an MLB game this spring, and there is no guarantee he will. The Blue Jays want him to make two more “starts” after this Wednesday outing, but they will not commit to them in an MLB spring training game. After the Blue Jays signed Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Max Scherzer, there aren’t enough rotation spots for Yesavage. The organization has also made it clear that they will be cautious with the 22-year-old’s innings this season, coming off a World Series run last year. That likely means Yesavage will not be a regular starter for Toronto early in the season, which makes it really hard to draft him where he is currently going in redraft leagues.

Jarren Duran, Alek Thomas and Jonathan Ornelas also homered for Mexico. Ornelas’s ended the game in his second plate appearance after replacing Randy Arozarena in the outfield. Mexico joined Team USA and Italy at 2-0 to open Pool B play. Those three teams will begin taking each other on Monday, with Mexico and U.S. set for a prime-time battle.

Tiedemann was widely regarded as one of baseball’s premier pitching prospects just a few years ago before a cascade of significant arm injuries stalled his career. The 23-year-old southpaw was shut down from throwing earlier this spring after experiencing renewed elbow soreness. At this point it’s impossible to forecast whether he’ll be able to stay healthy long enough to make a sustained impact at the highest level.

Ponce struck out just one, but of the eight balls in play against him, only one was hard hit. We’re a little nervous to recommend Ponce this season, just because the Jays now possess seven starters and Ponce had no real MLB track record before his success in Asia. Still, we imagine he’ll offer some mixed-league value if he gets the chance to make 30 starts.

Barger opened the scoring in the contest with a 410-foot (107.1 mph EV) solo shot off of left-hander Bryan Sammons in the second inning. He then added to that lead with a two-run double in the third. For the spring, the 26-year-old is now hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a pair of homers and 10 RBI.

The 35-year-old hurler punched out three opposing batters on the afternoon and didn’t allow a base on balls. All three hits that he allowed were singles and the Tigers never mounted a serious scoring threat against him. Gausman got eight whiffs on 52 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 27 percent. He has yet to allow a run over 4 1/3 innings during Grapefruit League play while registering a 6/1 K/BB ratio.

The 28-year-old hurler had struggled in Grapefruit League action before leaving for the Classic, so it was encouraging to see him get back on track in this one. Rodríguez got seven swings and misses on 30 pitches in the contest — three each on his splitter and slider — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. His fastball velocity was still down in this one though, averaging 94.4 mph (-1.3 mph).

The Jays have been monitoring his workload closely this spring and it sounds like they’ll continue to do so throughout the season. They have yet to make a decision on when his next outing will come and whether it’ll be a live batting practice session, a minor league game or if he’ll see action in a Grapefruit League affair. It’s possible they’re just being extremely cautious with the 22-year-old hurler, but until we see him back on a big league mound fantasy managers have the right to be concerned.

The only run of the game came on a Jonathan Clase groundout in the ninth after Rafael Lantigua doubled and stole third. Scherzer topped out at 95.8 mph today and averaged 93.9 mph with his fastball, which was slightly up from his 2025 average of 93.3 mph. Thoughts that he might need to open the season on the IL after his late signing are gone now, so the Jays are looking at quite the crowded rotation even with Shane Bieber sidelined. A six-man rotation is possible, but Cody Ponce and José Berríos could wind up in the pen at times.

Berríos, who would prefer to be pitching for Puerto Rico right now, gave up five hits, including a Dominic Fletcher homer, walked one and struck out three. He’s in line to open the season in Toronto’s rotation, though he could be in jeopardy of losing his spot once Max Scherzer or Shane Bieber is deemed ready.

Hoffman was sharp today and a little extra velocity on his pitches; his six fastballs averaged 97.2 mph, compared to 96.4 mph last year, and his two sliders were up 1.8 mph to 88.8 mph. Of course, it was just eight pitches coming on a bit more than four months of rest.

Unless maybe they’re good friends of something, Lantigua, who rejoined the Blue Jays as a minor league free agent this winter, has to be hoping that out-of-options Leo Jimenez fails to make the Blue Jays and gets claimed off waivers. That’d probably put Lantigua next in line for any infield spots that open up due to injury. The 27-year-old is a lifetime .270/.381/.380 hitter in Triple-A, and he’s off to an 8-for-13 start this spring.

Mantiply heads back north of the border to fortify Toronto’s left-handed relief depth. The 35-year-old southpaw made just 10 appearances for the Diamondbacks last year before latching on with the Blue Jays on a minor league pact. He’s merely organizational depth at this advanced stage of his career.

Macko has spent the last couple years on Toronto’s 40-man roster but has yet to reach the big leagues. He’ll have to wait a bit longer now. Stanifer made a big jump last year, showing that he could stick as a starter and finishing the season at Double-A New Hampshire. He projects as a back-end rotation arm down the road.
