Young showed few signs of rust in just his second game back since October 29 due to a knee injury, heating up down the home stretch of a high-scoring slugfest. He buried a clutch three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining to pull it back to a one-possession game, then had a chance to force overtime on the final shot of regulation, but his fallaway 16-footer came up short. It’s possible Atlanta will keep a governor on his workload for the next few games but he remains an elite scoring threat even in that scenario. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday with a rematch against the Bulls before facing the Heat and Knicks to close out a three-game week.

Johnson buried a three-pointer in the final seconds to pull Atlanta within one point but they were unable to complete the comeback as Trae Young’s potential game-tying jumper rimmed out as time expired. The 24-year-old offensive catalyst has been one of the most impactful all-around fantasy contributors this season, delivering 23.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.4 blocks through 27 games. His ascension to elite fantasy status doesn’t appear to be a mirage.

Okongwu knocked down 7-of-9 first-half shot attempts to finish with a game-high 17 points as both teams shot over 55 percent from the floor and combined for a whopping 156 points. He was relatively quiet during the final two quarters as Jalen Johnson and Trae Young spearheaded Atlanta’s comeback effort that fell just short on the game’s final possession. 24 hours after setting a new career high with 43 points, Johnson wasn’t able to keep his hot streak going. This was his ninth straight game with a double-double, but he had his fewest assists in a game since Nov. 7, and he set a new season high for turnovers. This was a subpar performance for Johnson when compared to what he’s done recently, and he’ll look to get back on track against the Bulls on Sunday.

Based on his numbers entering Friday, Drummond has made strides as a perimeter shooter. However, his 3-of-4 effort from deep was well beyond anyone’s expectations. And these weren’t hopeful heaves; Drummond clearly believes in his shot. While he hasn’t reached the point where fantasy managers can expect consistent three-point production, nights like Friday are now possible. That’s something that no one would have imagined as recently as last season. Whether Drummond remains in the starting lineup on Saturday depends on Joel Embiid, who did not play on Friday due to illness and right knee injury management.

While Tyrese Maxey was the 76ers’ leading scorer on Friday, a strong case can be made for Edgecombe being the player of the game. The rookie guard made big plays on offense, and his work defensively on Jalen Brunson was crucial. Given his Yahoo! No surprise here after Young returned from a knee injury and played 20 minutes against the Hornets on Thursday. The Hawks will give the 27-year-old point guard the night off for right knee injury management reasons rather than put him back on the floor for the second game of a back-to-back. Johnson’s 43 points were a career-high. Just as impressive as the 43 points alone is that Johnson also had 11 rebounds and nine assists, falling just shy of a triple-double. Young was understandably a little rusty in his first game action since October 29. The 27-year-old point guard’s shooting was just a little off as he went 3-of-8 from the field including 0-of-5 from behind the three-point line. Young’s playmaking ability was still apparent as he dished out 10 assists. He played 20 minutes, though that will increase in future games. Young was assigned to the G League for a practice on Tuesday and has now been recalled to Atlanta, with the team set to practice on Wednesday. If Young’s knee responds well to a practice with the team, he could certainly make a return this weekend. They have a back-to-back on Thursday and Friday, so he’d likely only play in one of those games if he’s made available by then. If not, they host the Bulls on Sunday. Young may have his minutes limited in his first game back, but he has never come off the bench in his career, so Nickeil Alexander-Walker will likely return to a reserve role when the time comes. However, NAW saw plenty of usage early on before Young’s injury, so having Trae back in the lineup shouldn’t decimate his value. However, NAW, Dyson Daniels and Jalen Johnson will all take a slight usage hit when last season’s assists leader returns.
