Through four games, George still has not recorded a 20-point game in this series. While the 76ers had Joel Embiid back in the lineup for Game 4, they need more scoring from George to have a chance of extending the series to Game 6 on Thursday. George recorded a complete stat line in Game 4, but the career résumé strongly suggests that he is capable of doing more. Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday in Boston.

Backcourt sidekick VJ Edgecombe (6/4/1/1) and wing Kelly Oubre Jr. (two points, four rebounds, one assist and one block) shot a combined 2-of-15 from the field, and the 76ers could not overcome those struggles, even with Joel Embiid back in the lineup. Just 17 days removed from undergoing an emergency appendectomy, Embiid was back in the 76ers’ starting lineup on Sunday. While his return did not result in a 76ers victory, as the Celtics had too much firepower, the 7-footer deserves credit for gutting out 34 minutes. And Embiid was effective overall, recording a double-double with six assists. With Philadelphia’s season on the line, Embiid will likely take on a similar workload in Game 5 on Tuesday.

Brown’s 20 points in Game 4 were the fewest he’s scored in a game this series, having produced 25 or more in each of the first three. He and Jayson Tatum were at their best in the third quarter of Game 4, combining to score 25 of the Celtics’ 39 points. Their production helped Boston withstand a 36-point third quarter for the 76ers, who could not offer up a counterpunch in the fourth. The Celtics’ star finished three rebounds shy of a triple-double, with the lone complaint being his five turnovers. Overall, Tatum has gotten sharper by the game, which makes the Celtics a serious threat to win an NBA title. The first order of business for Boston is to close out the 76ers, with Game 5 scheduled for Tuesday at TD Garden.

On a day when starter Derrick White (6/6/3/1/2 with two three-pointers) attempted just five shots, Pritchard stepped up with one of the best outings of his postseason career. The 32 points, a playoff career-high for Pritchard, were two shy of the Celtics franchise record for most in a playoff game by a reserve, which Kevin McHale still holds. While he made too many starts to qualify for NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors, Pritchard remains one of the best reserve scorers in the league. And he reminded Philadelphia of that in Game 4. The Celtics will look to close out the series on Tuesday night.

Initially doubtful, Embiid is trending toward being available for the first time in these playoffs. If he’s able to play, fewer minutes will be available to Adem Bona and Andre Drummond. However, given the injury and the time that Embiid has missed, there should still be rotation minutes available for Bona and Drummond.

All of Pritchard’s 15 points came on his five three-pointers. None were bigger than the one to beat the shot clock and put the Celtics up by five with less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation. Pritchard was +16 in 33 minutes on the night.

The 25-year-old point guard proceeded to hit back-to-back three-pointers to essentially put the game on ice for Philadelphia. After taking just four three-pointers in the Game 1 loss, Maxey was 5-of-12 from behind the arc in Game 2. His scoring remains critical if Philadelphia is going to pull the upset in this series.

Edgecombe headed to the locker room twice and was seen riding a stationary bike on the 76ers’ sideline at points during the game. Nevertheless, the 20-year-old guard managed to play 35 minutes and was excellent in Game 2. Edgecombe bounced back from a 13-point performance in Game 1 to lead the 76ers with 30 points and six three-pointers in the Game 2 victory. The series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3 on Friday.

Edgecombe’s official playoff debut did not go as smoothly as the rookie would have hoped. While good inside the three-point line, he missed all five of his three-point attempts on the day. Edgecombe played 34 minutes against the Celtics, and that was with the fourth quarter essentially being “garbage time.” Edgecombe and the 76ers will look to put up more resistance in Game 2 on Tuesday.

While George finished Sunday’s defeat with solid percentages, the 76ers will have little chance of competing if he’s only attempting eight shots from the field. By comparison, Kelly Oubre Jr. (10/7/2) shot 5-of-14 from the field, including 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. With Joel Embiid (appendicitis) out indefinitely, George will have to be much closer to Tyrese Maxey’s “1B” than he was on Sunday for the 76ers to have any chance of being competitive in this series.

With six players in double figures and stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combining to score 51 points, the Celtics did not need much scoring from White. Shooting 2-of-7 from three, the veteran guard dished out six assists and committed just one turnover. White’s ability to fill the stat line is what made him so valuable to fantasy managers during the regular season, and it has made him an important piece in Boston since his acquisition during the 2021-22 campaign.

However, he shot 80 percent from inside the arc, thanks to a combination of efficient mid-range shooting and the ability to get to the basket at will. Due to the nature of Game 1, which the Celtics won 123-91, and early foul trouble, Brown played only 30 minutes. But he was effective while on the floor, finishing with a game-high point total and a final stat line that only lacked a blocked shot. While there’s a lot more basketball to be played in this series, the 76ers could not come up with an answer for Brown or Jayson Tatum in Game 1. If that trend continues, the Celtics may not need to dig too deep to advance to the second round.

While Embiid’s status for the 76ers’ first round series against the Hornets hasn’t been made official, he’s unlikely to be ready for the start of the series. Charania reports the 76ers are preparing to begin the series without their 32-year-old superstar. Paul George and Tyrese Maxey will take on added importance in his absence. Theoretically, Embiid could be available later in the series.

His five triples matched his season high, which was great to see after he hit four triples total over the final five games before the postseason. He’ll look to stay hot in their series against the Celtics, which will start on Sunday in Boston.

Watford likely won’t see the floor, but if the 76ers deal with injuries, Watford will be available.
