With the Knicks trailing the Pistons by eight at the end of the third quarter, the home team needed a spark in Saturday’s series opener. Enter Payne, who hit two three-pointers and shot 4-of-5 from the field in the fourth. His production was part of a 21-0 Knicks run that swung the game’s momentum, compensating for fellow reserve Miles McBride’s (one rebound, four assists, and one steal) failure to score in his 15 minutes on the court. Payne can be erratic, but days like Saturday serve as a reminder of the value he can bring to the table. Game 2 is scheduled for Monday night.

Towns was impactful on both ends of the floor in his first playoff game in a Knicks uniform. In addition to shooting well over 50 percent from the field, he recorded a complete stat line and did not commit a turnover. To say he looked far more comfortable on Saturday than he did in New York’s April 10 loss to the Pistons would be an understatement. The Knicks will need Towns to consistently reach (or exceed) the level he played at on Saturday to go deep into the playoffs. Game 2 is on Monday night.

For the first half of Saturday’s season opener, Detroit wing Ausar Thompson and guard Dennis Schroder did an excellent job of defending Brunson. The Knicks’ point guard shot 3-of-14 from the field in the first half, and appeared to tweak his right ankle during the third quarter. However, a footwear change may have done the trick, as Brunson shot 9-of-13 from the field to finish the Game 1 victory. Additionally, he committed only one turnover, a sign that the early shooting struggles did not affect Brunson’s work as a playmaker. The Knicks will look to take a 2-0 series lead on Monday.

Anunoby came out hot to start Saturday’s series opener, scoring 19 first-half points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. While his offensive production tailed off after the break, that was not the case for the Knicks’ wing’s defense. Given the task of defending Cade Cunningham, Anunoby made the point guard’s life difficult for most of the evening. And he was outstanding during New York’s 21-0 fourth quarter run, forcing multiple turnovers to get the Knicks out in transition. New York hosts Game 2 on Monday night.

Hukporti is back after missing over a month with a torn meniscus in his right knee. However, this is very much a “break in case of emergency” situation, as Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa are also available. Don’t expect to see Hukporti on the floor unless there are multiple injuries or the game gets out of hand.

After a disappointing start to the season, Claxton was able to redeem himself steadily. The Nets center finished as a seventh-round player in free-throw punt builds, which is only one round worse than his Yahoo! ADP. That said, Claxton’s rebounding and blocked shot production decreased, with the averages of 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks being the lowest for him since the 2021-22 campaign. He’ll remain a key building block for the Nets next season, but the team is undoubtedly hoping that he’ll be more effective on the glass and as a defender.

Martin was allowed to start Sunday’s season finale, his 11th of the season, and the former second-round pick played well. He recorded his second 20-point game in five appearances, and the rebounding production was also encouraging. Martin’s contract for next season is non-guaranteed, making it a fool’s errand to project what value he will provide to fantasy managers. And with the Nets having four first-round picks this summer, Martin’s path to a guaranteed contract will remain challenging.

Despite the Knicks securing the third seed in the East on Friday, McBride played 30 minutes as Josh Hart’s replacement in the starting lineup in Brooklyn. He had a good afternoon for fantasy managers in active leagues, providing solid value in points, rebounds, assists, steals and three-pointers. McBride’s role will be different when the playoffs begin next weekend, but his scoring ability will be critical off the bench.

The Knicks rested four starters for Sunday’s game, including Jalen Brunson, so Payne was in the starting lineup. As is usually the case for the veteran backup, it was an adventure, but he made big plays on both ends of the court down the stretch to get New York its 51st win. Payne will return to the bench for the playoffs, which the Knicks will begin on Saturday or Sunday when the Pistons visit for Game 1.

With Mikal Bridges checking out six seconds into Sunday’s game, Shamet became a primary scoring option on Sunday. He made the most of his opportunity, shooting 7-of-13 from three and recording a season-high point total. Shamet shot 14-of-27 from three in his final three games of the season. While the Knicks did not have much on the line, the recent run could ensure that Shamet plays rotation minutes during the first-round series against Detroit. Game 1 will be on Saturday or Sunday.

The Knicks secured the third seed in the East before Sunday’s game, so there isn’t anything on the line besides Bridges’s games-played streak. He logged six seconds before intentionally fouling a Nets player, with Landry Shamet replacing him in the lineup. Bridges, whose NBA games-played streak is 556, has not missed a game since high school. He’ll be ready for the Knicks’ first-round matchup with the Pistons next weekend.

Tucker is set to make his first start of the season for the shorthanded Knicks. The 3-and-D forward will likely be asked to carry a heavy workload in the final regular season, but there’s no telling how productive he’ll be given that he’s averaging 1.5 points through two appearances in 2024-25.

Claxton is back after sitting out Friday’s loss to the Timberwolves. While Precious Achiuwa should be a good matchup for him, fantasy managers in active leagues should assume Claxton will not log starters’ minutes in the regular-season finale. Johnson, Watford and Wilson offer decent fantasy ceilings for Sunday’s loaded schedule.

Watford is one of the Nets whose playing time has increased recently, as the front office has prioritized the draft lottery over winning games. His ability to provide value across the board makes Watford a player worth having during the “silly season,” especially when he’s in the starting lineup. After dropping 20 points in Thursday’s loss to the Hawks, Wilson cooled off a bit on Friday. However, he still offered value in the rebound and three-point categories, and the second-year forward has reached double figures in four of his last five appearances. Starter Cameron Johnson has not appeared in a game since March 29. While he hasn’t been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Knicks yet, it’s challenging to envision Cam playing. Wilson’s chances of starting the regular-season finale are pretty high, and he would be worth rostering in active leagues.

Johnson has reached double figures in scoring in six of his last seven appearances, including two of 20 points or more. Friday’s performance was one of his best this season, as the Nets guard only missed two shots from the field. In addition to the points, Johnson provided solid value in rebounds, assists and three-pointers. Going into Sunday’s season finale against the Knicks, the concern is playing time, as Johnson only logged 24 minutes. He’s played 25 minutes or less in four straight games, as players like Reece Beekman (11/2/3/3 with one three-pointer in 31 minutes) and Dariq Whitehead (6/2/2/1 with two three-pointers in 20 minutes) pick up additional playing time.

Shamet has not been a factor in fantasy basketball, but he’s made at least one three-pointer in 12 straight games. The five he hit on Friday were the most in a game for the Knicks wing since April 1, when Shamet knocked down six in a win over the 76ers. With Miles McBride (12/1/1/1 with three three-pointers in 18 minutes) being New York’s best bench scorer, Shamet’s production will be needed in the playoffs. Despite Friday’s loss, the Knicks clinched the three-seed due to Indiana’s loss to Orlando. They’ll face Detroit in the first round, which begins next weekend.

Anunoby returned to the Knicks’ lineup after sitting out Thursday’s loss to the Pistons and struggled offensively. Shooting 33.3 percent from the field overall, the Knicks forward was 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. The good news for fantasy managers in active leagues is that Anunoby only committed one turnover. Hence, the field goal percentage was the only category in which they took a hit. The Knicks visit the Nets on Sunday in a regular season finale that won’t impact the standings, as New York secured the three-seed due to Indiana’s loss to Orlando.

With the Pacers losing to the Magic on Friday, the Knicks secured the three-seed in the East before their game concluded. That doesn’t take away the sting of blowing a 23-point lead, but New York can take some solace in Brunson looking much sharper than he did in Thursday’s loss to the Pistons. However, while he shot over 50 percent from the field, he only had two assists on the night. Mikal Bridges (17/2/8/1 with one three-pointer) was the more productive playmaker against the Cavaliers, but the Knicks will need Brunson to do a bit more in setting up his teammates during the postseason. New York’s regular-season finale against the Nets may be seen as an opportunity to rest the starters before their first-round matchup with Detroit. If so, Brunson won’t help fantasy managers in active leagues.

Make it nine straight games with a double-double or triple-double for Towns, whose performance on Sunday was pedestrian by his standards. Over the past two weeks, he has provided third-round value in eight-cat formats, with an average of 3.3 turnovers per game causing a two-round drop in his nine-cat value. The good news for Towns managers whose seasons run through Week 23 is that the Knicks play four games and still have some work to do to sew up the three-seed in the East.

Brunson returned to the Knicks’ lineup on Sunday after a 15-game absence. Unsurprisingly, there was some rust early on. Brunson would score 10 of his 14 points after halftime as the Knicks moved one step closer to locking up the three-seed in the East. Following the game, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said that Brunson was not under any restrictions, but the team trainer watched him closely throughout the game. While he has not been a fantasy asset during his first two NBA seasons, Whitehead has recently been given more opportunities to show what he can do. After scoring 17 points in an April 3 loss to the Timberwolves, the second-year guard has reached double figures in two straight games for the first time.
