Thompson had just six points on six shots in 15 minutes in the 21-point loss to the Cavaliers on Monday. Like the rest of the Pistons, he bounced back against the Magic on Wednesday. Thompson, who was questionable going into the game with an illness, still struggled shooting with 12 points on 14 attempts, but he collected at least 11 rebounds for the second time in his last three games. Could Duren be in for a breakout season this year? The easiest path to a breakout would be an injury to Isaiah Stewart, which would mean more minutes on a regular basis for Duren. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old center played 33 minutes, though. Another way Duren could breakout is that the Pistons simply need his scoring to win games this year. The Pistons have three wins after five games. In those wins, Duren has scored at least 20 points twice and in the other game he was ejected after playing 12 minutes. With the Pistons needing points without Jaden Ivey (knee) and Malik Beasley, Duren looks like he’s ready to step up.

Cunningham joined the likes of LeBron James and Nikola Jokic as players with at least 30 points, at least 10 assists, at least three steals and at least three blocks in a game in the last 20 years. It’s perhaps even more impressive that the 24-year-old point guard had a great game after having arguably the worst game he’s had as a professional against the Cavaliers on Monday. Cunningham and the Pistons were able to bounce back for a much-needed win. Expect the team to go as far as he takes them this year.

LeVert is available for the first time since the preseason, giving the Pistons much-needed depth on the perimeter. Daniss Jenkins and Chaz Lanier will likely lose out on some playing time with LeVert available, but this will not impact fantasy basketball. Rockets coach Ime Udoka made the switch for this game to move Steven Adams to a reserve role and bump Okogie into the starting unit. It’s unclear if this is a move that will stick or if this was just for one game. Still, it was a strong start for Okogie, who was able to contribute on defense and from beyond the arc. It has been a rough start to the season for Eason, but he was able to get things going on Monday, even though he didn’t contribute much on the defensive end. Eason was drafted in the 10th round of Yahoo! leagues and had been struggling to return that value. There weren’t many bright spots for the Pistons in Monday’s loss, but Holland was able to have a decent game. He was one of four Pistons to score 10 points, as he was joined by Cade Cunningham, Tobias Harris and Tolu Smith, who came in during garbage time and made the score a bit more respectable. This wasn’t a great game for Holland, but in a game this ugly, it looked a little better than his teammates.

Fred VanVleet (knee) suffered a torn ACL just before the start of training camp. While he has not officially been ruled out for the entire 2025-26 season, a DPE can only be granted if the player will not play. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the exemption would be equivalent to 50 percent of the injured player’s annual salary. VanVleet is due to make $25 million this season. The exemption would give the Rockets more room to account for VanVleet’s absence, which would impact Reed Sheppard’s role if another guard is added to the roster.

Had the Pistons mounted a comeback and won this game, Stewart would’ve been the player of the game for Detroit hands down. Sheppard was not in the starting five for Tuesday’s opener, with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka preferring to go with a big lineup that featured Amen Thompson at the point. Oklahoma City wasted no time attacking Sheppard in the half-court while forcing him to make plays offensively. Returning to the city where he began his NBA career on Thunder ring/banner night, Durant struggled with his perimeter shot (0-of-4 from three) and finished with more turnovers (four) than assists (three) in the one-point defeat. Things could have worsened in the first overtime, as Durant was signaling for a timeout the Rockets did not have. However, the officials did not acknowledge the request, so the game went into a second overtime. Durant, who was excellent in the mid-range, will find his perimeter shot in time while getting more acclimated to an offense that currently lacks a legitimate point guard. Şengün was sensational in Tuesday’s one-point defeat, recording a complete stat line and finishing three assists shy of a triple-double. Şengün effectively served as the starting power forward in Houston’s opening lineup, as head coach Ime Udoka decided to go big and start Steven Adams (four points, 13 rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes) at center. Houston’s rotation for Thursday’s preseason finale was limited, as head coach Ime Udoka rested most of his key players. However, that decision opened things up for Sheppard, who took advantage of the opportunity.
