Butler will return after missing Game 3, which is what we were expecting. Jonathan Kuminga started in place of Butler on Saturday, but he will likely be pushed to the bench and out of the rotation. Buddy Hield and Gary Payton II will also lose minutes with Butler back.

Butler was sidelined for Game 3 after taking a hard fall in Game 2, but Butler is expected to be back with a chance to take a 3-1 lead in this series. Jonathan Kuminga played 17 minutes as the starter in place of Butler on Saturday, while Buddy Hield, Moses Moody and Gary Payton II all played at least 20 minutes off the bench. Kuminga would likely be pushed back out of the rotation if Butler returns.

Landale is on track to be available after missing the first three games with a right knee contusion. However, while he can provide depth, the Rockets may stick with Steven Adams as Alperen Sengun’s primary backup. Don’t expect too much from Landale if he’s able to play.

Butler did not play in Game 3 on Saturday, with Jonathan Kuminga logging 17 minutes as his replacement in the starting lineup. While Kuminga did not provide much value as a scorer, he was solid defensively. If Butler does play, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Sunday that his playing time will depend on how the veteran wing feels.

While Brooks was the lone Rockets starter to shoot at least 50 percent from the field in Game 3, he struggled with foul trouble throughout. The veteran defender would pick up four fouls in the first half and foul out with 3:47 remaining and the Rockets trailing by four. Houston would go on to lose by 11, falling behind the Warriors two games to one. With Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green (9/6/5/1 with one three-pointer in 39 minutes) being inconsistent scorers, any production the Rockets receive from Brooks will be welcome. Game 4 is on Monday.

VanVleet led the Rockets in scoring on Saturday. However, as was the case on many occasions during the regular season, the field goal percentage left something to be desired. A 37.8 percent shooter during the regular season, VanVleet is 11-of-40 in this series. Simply put, that is not good enough if the Rockets are to knock off Golden State. Houston will look to even the series with a win in Game 4 on Monday night.

After victimizing the Warriors in the first two games of the series, Sengun was held in check Saturday night. Golden State’s decision to start Quentin Post meant the Rockets’ center had to contend with more size at the start of the game, and he struggled. Making matters worse was Sengun’s 1-of-6 night from the foul line. A 69.2 percent foul shooting during the regular season, that’s going to be an area of difficulty for Sengun, but he can’t be as poor as he was on Saturday. Now trailing two games to one, the Rockets will look to even the series on Monday.

After providing minimal value in the first two games of the series, Hield came to life in Game 3. Jimmy Butler’s absence meant more playing time, and the veteran guard was up to the task. Hield was one of two Warriors to make five three-pointers on the night, with Stephen Curry being the other. His production off the bench helped compensate for spot starter Jonathan Kuminga, who recorded a 7/1/2 line in 17 minutes, providing limited offensive value as Butler’s replacement. Kuminga was excellent defensively, helping limit Jalen Green. Game 4 is on Monday, with the Warriors holding a 2-1 series lead.

Given his limited offensive repertoire, Payton is the player opposing defenses tend to leave alone when he’s on the court. With Jimmy Butler (pelvis/glute) sidelined for Game 3, there was a need for GPII to make the Rockets pay. And that’s what happened in the fourth quarter. At one stage, Payton scored nine straight Warriors points, helping to put Game 3 in the win column. Even if Butler is back for Game 4 on Monday, the Warriors will need Payton to make the Rockets pay for leaving him alone if they continue to take that approach.

With Jimmy Butler (pelvis/glute) unavailable, Curry was due to receive even more defensive attention from the Rockets in Game 3. And their approach paid dividends early, with the Warriors’ sharpshooter making one of his first five shots. But he would get going in the second quarter, not slowing up until Golden State secured a 2-1 series lead. Curry has scored 30 points or more in two of three games thus far. Game 4 is on Monday night, with the Warriors aiming to take a 3-1 lead.

The Warriors are without Jimmy Butler (pelvis/glute) for Game 3, resulting in Kuminga moving into the starting lineup. But that is not the only change. After going small in the first two games, the Warriors will move Post into the starting five, with Moses Moody coming off the bench. This change should provide a greater deterrent to Alperen Sengun, who played well against smaller lineups in Games 1 and 2.

Jonathan Kuminga will replace Butler, who will sit out after taking a hard fall during Wednesday’s Game 2 loss, in the starting lineup. Kuminga gets a chance to make an impact after falling out of the Warriors’ rotation late in the regular season. While Kuminga can be a wild card offensively, this is a significant opportunity for him.

Payton II is known more for his defense, but he failed to score a point in 12 minutes in Game 2’s loss to the Rockets. The 32-year-old shooting guard is now in danger of missing Game 3 with a shoulder injury given his questionable listing. With Jimmy Butler hurting, the Warriors need all the help they can get, though Payton II is far from an essential player at this point of his career.

Kerr went on to say he thinks there’s a chance Butler plays. The 35-year-old small forward is officially listed as questionable with a pelvis and deep muscle contusion that forced him to leave Game 2 early. If Butler can’t go, Jonathan Kuminga will move into the rotation again in Game 3.

Butler has officially been diagnosed with a pelvis and deep gluteal muscle contusion after undergoing an MRI. This lines up with ESPN’s Shams Charania’s report from Thursday night. The good news is that the MRI Butler underwent on Thursday did not reveal a fracture or any structural damage due to the hard fall he took during Wednesday’s Game 2 loss to the Rockets. However, Charania reports the veteran forward’s status for Saturday’s Game 3 is in some doubt. Butler’s exit led to Jonathan Kuminga entering the rotation after being a DNP-CD in the three games prior. He should see action if Jimmy is unable to play.

During Game 1, multiple outlets reported that Kuminga was unlikely to crack the Warriors’ rotation unless there was a need to adjust the game plan. That adjustment was forced on Wednesday, as Brandin Podziemski was ill and Jimmy Butler exited during the first quarter with a pelvic contusion. As a result, Kuminga was back in the rotation after sitting out Golden State’s last three games. While the stat line wasn’t impressive, the Warriors may have to rely on him for Game 3 on Saturday, depending on Butler’s availability.

One of the interesting decisions in the first two games of this series was Houston assigning Alperen Sengun to Moody defensively. After attempting four three-pointers in Game 1, Moody put up six on Wednesday, making three. According to the TNT broadcast during the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr wants Moody to attempt at least eight per game with Houston using Sengun to defend him. With Jimmy Butler’s (pelvis) status for Game 3 undetermined, Moody’s willingness to put up shots could be crucial. The series resumes on Saturday in San Francisco.

The Rockets managed to keep Curry in check on Wednesday after he went off for 31 points in Sunday’s series opener. However, it’s important to note the impact of Jimmy Butler’s (pelvis) exit during the first quarter. The Warriors were left to search for answers offensively, with 12 players logging rotation minutes before the outcome was no longer in doubt. Curry’s task of putting up points becomes far more challenging without Butler on the court, making Thursday’s MRI for Jimmy a potential turning point in this series. Game 3 is on Saturday.

Initially questionable for Game 2, Podziemski attempted to play through his stomach illness. He played the first eight minutes before having to exit, and the second-year guard did not return until 6:11 remaining in the third quarter. Mercifully, Podziemski was shut down for good with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, as he was not physically up to the challenge. The good news for Golden State is that Game 3 is not until Saturday. Hopefully, that’s enough time for Podziemski to return to full health.

Through the first two games of this series, Brooks has shot 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. While that isn’t necessarily great, he’s done enough to keep the Warriors honest thus far. The lone Rockets starter to excel in Sunday’s series-opening defeat, Sengun had plenty of help in Game 2. Although the point total decreased, his rebounds and assists were significantly better than in Game 1. With the Warriors using Draymond Green as their starting “center,” Sengun will have a size advantage more often than not. Some nights, that may mean more scoring, but on Wednesday, it was about the rebounds and assists for the young Rockets center. The series shifts to San Francisco, with Game 3 scheduled for Saturday night.

After struggling mightily in his playoff debut on Sunday, Green looked far more comfortable in Game 2. He became the fifth Rockets player in franchise history to score 30 points or more in a playoff game, aged 23 years or younger, and Green also tied the Rockets’ record for three-pointers in a playoff game. While Green can’t be expected to threaten 40 points every night in this series, the Rockets will need a consistently productive version of him to advance. Game 3 is on Saturday in San Francisco.

After playing at least 17 minutes in six straight games, Kuminga picked up a DNP-CD in Golden State’s final two games before the playoffs. He met a similar fate in Sunday’s Game 1, and that may be the norm for Kuminga moving forward. On a night when their backcourt struggled mightily, the Rockets received solid contributions from their reserve bigs. Adams led the way with 12 rebounds, while Jabari Smith Jr. didn’t miss a shot and finished with 11 points, six rebounds, one steal, one block and one three-pointer in 25 minutes. Houston also took the approach of pairing Adams and Alperen Sengun when Stephen Curry was not on the court, but this had minimal impact on the action due to Houston’s guards struggling to hit shots. Sunday’s series opener was brutal for the Rockets’ starting guards. VanVleet and Jalen Green (7/8/2 in 31 minutes) combined to shoot 7-of-34 from the field overall and 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. Neither was an efficient shooter during the regular season, with VanVleet making 37.8 percent of his attempts and Green slightly better at 42.3 percent. That said, neither reached those levels in Game 1, which was a significant reason why Houston lost. VanVleet and Green will look to bounce back in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Having scored 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting in Houston’s April 6 win over the Warriors, Brooks likely entered Sunday’s series opener with ample offensive confidence. While he did have a better night shooting-wise than starting guards Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green, Brooks offered limited offensive value, and the defensive stats weren’t there, either. He and Amen Thompson (8/9/6/1/1 in 33 minutes) will have their hands full in this series, and they’ll need to provide some offense as well. Sengun was one of the few Rockets who managed to get going offensively in Sunday’s series opener, shooting over 50 percent from the field. The two-big lineup of him and Steven Adams did not significantly impact the action, but that’s an approach the Rockets will take when Stephen Curry is not on the floor. However, more important will be getting consistent production from the guards, as Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green shot a combined 7-of-34 from the field in Game 1. Life will become far more difficult for Sengun if the guards are unable to space the floor effectively. Game 2 is on Wednesday.

Only three Warriors reached double figures in Sunday’s 95-85 victory, with Podziemski joining Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. Making his first postseason appearance, the second-year guard offered solid value in rebounds, assists, steals and three-pointers in Game 1. Podziemski isn’t part of Golden State’s “big three,” with Draymond Green owning that seat next to Curry and Butler. But his contributions are essential, especially in a series that may be low-scoring due to the defensive ability of both teams. The Warriors will look to extend their series lead to 2-0 on Wednesday.

Butler’s first playoff game as a Warrior went about as well as his new team would have hoped. Not only was he efficient offensively, but the veteran forward was also impactful defensively. Sunday’s win was Butler’s fourth postseason game with at least five steals and first since Game 1 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. Curry missed his first three shots on Sunday, possibly prompting some to recall the April 6 meeting in which the Rockets held him to just three points. That game was an outlier for the elite shooter, and he would make 12 of his final 16 shots in Sunday’s series opener. During his postseason career, Curry has scored 30 points or more on 59 occasions. While his injured right thumb remains problematic, it did not keep Curry from showing up when it mattered most on Tuesday.
