With Williamson due to be re-evaluated this week, more will be learned about his recovery and how soon he’ll be able to play. For any rookie, much less one being asked to master the point guard position in the NBA, there are going to be bumps in the road. Fears struggled against the Suns, shooting poorly and committing five turnovers while recording just one assist. The good news is that he did record three steals and three three-pointers, so there was some value. If anything, fantasy managers have to hope that the early struggles give way to improved play as the season wears on, especially if the Pelicans find themselves out of playoff contention in the final months.

After going off for 41 points on Saturday, Murphy was held in check by the Suns on Monday. With Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole unavailable, more of the offense will run through Murphy. And the Pelicans’ use of rookie Jeremiah Fears at the point has not negatively impacted Trey’s fantasy value. He’s providing third-round value in nine-cat formats, exceeding his Yahoo! ADP of 42. As long as he stays healthy, Murphy is more than capable of being a top-50 player in fantasy basketball at a minimum.

Given their respective Yahoo! ADPs, few fantasy managers expected Knueppel to outperform college teammate Cooper Flagg. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played by both, but the Hornets have to be thrilled with what they’ve seen from Knueppel. The rookie finished Monday’s game one assist shy of his first triple-double, and he was efficient in putting up those numbers. Knueppel’s rostered in just 37 percent of Yahoo! leagues, which is way too low given his production and his place in the Hornets’ rotation. Especially with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller out due to injury.

Initially questionable for Monday’s game with back spasms, Bridges looked fine against the Lakers. He shot well over 50 percent from the field and recorded a complete stat line while only committing two turnovers. With LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller out due to injury, most of the offense has run through Bridges, and he’s closing in on top-25 value in nine-cat formats. While some may be tempted to sell high, the circumstances make Bridges a player worth holding onto until there’s a clearer idea of how much longer Ball and Miller will be out.

After playing 22 minutes off the bench in Friday’s loss to the Heat, Diabaté played more than starter Ryan Kalkbrenner on Monday. The fourth-year forward/center was the more active of the two defensively, recording five “stocks” in 29 minutes while Kalkbrenner (nine points and four rebounds in 19 minutes) got into early foul trouble and was not responsible for any steals or blocked shots. Both players will log rotation minutes, but who plays more may come down to a “hot hand” situation for Hornets head coach Charles Lee. Diabaté was the superior performer on Monday, so he played more.

Coming off the bench for the second straight game, Poole was far better on Friday than in Wednesday’s blowout loss to the Nuggets. The 30 points were a season-high for the Pelicans guard, who still provides top-100 value in eight- and nine-cat formats. Jeremiah Fears (13/4/8/4 with two three-pointers) didn’t shoot the ball well as the starting point guard, but he did not commit a turnover in his 29 minutes. With Fears being a lottery pick, it makes sense for the Pelicans to prioritize his development.
