This one was a low-scoring slugfest as both teams struggled to get anything going offensively. The reigning MVP knocked down just one three-pointer as Oklahoma City shot 20 percent (6-of-30) from distance in an ugly win. Perhaps the most incredible statistical nugget from this one is that Gilgeous-Alexander only went to the line once in the contest.

Rockets coach Ime Udoka made the switch for this game to move Steven Adams to a reserve role and bump Okogie into the starting unit. It’s unclear if this is a move that will stick or if this was just for one game. Still, it was a strong start for Okogie, who was able to contribute on defense and from beyond the arc. If he remains a starter, he won’t be worth rostering in standard leagues, but he can be streamed in deeper formats for threes and steals.

Mitchell was a difference-maker for Oklahoma City in this one as he came off the bench to knock down seven of his 10 shots from inside the three-point line. Sengun struggled in Houston’s loss to Detroit, but he bounced back with an efficient performance to help the Rockets get their first win of the season. Many were expecting a breakout year from Sengun, which is why he was drafted in the second round of Yahoo! leagues. So far, in two of his three games, he has played like that player. He’s averaging 25.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.3 threes per game this season and will look to stay hot in Toronto on Wednesday.

It has been a rough start to the season for Eason, but he was able to get things going on Monday, even though he didn’t contribute much on the defensive end. Eason was drafted in the 10th round of Yahoo! leagues and had been struggling to return that value. Rockets coach Ime Udoka is shifting away from the double-big lineup, at least for one game. He could simply be experimenting with a new opening unit against a rebuilding team. Okogie has some upside to provide steals as a starter, but he isn’t a consistent contributor on offense.

Fred VanVleet (knee) suffered a torn ACL just before the start of training camp. While he has not officially been ruled out for the entire 2025-26 season, a DPE can only be granted if the player will not play. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the exemption would be equivalent to 50 percent of the injured player’s annual salary. VanVleet is due to make $25 million this season. The exemption would give the Rockets more room to account for VanVleet’s absence, which would impact Reed Sheppard’s role if another guard is added to the roster.

The Thunder are still without Jalen Williams (wrist), Alex Caruso (concussion) and Nikola Topic (groin), which has opened the door for Mitchell to play more minutes. When SGA scores 30 points, his scoring average goes down. He has 120 points through the first three games of the year, and this was by far his most efficient outing; he also only took four free throws, and he made all of them. Perhaps it helped that the Thunder finally didn’t go to double overtime, though that resulted in fewer shot attempts. SGA will continue to be one of the best players in fantasy basketball. They head to Dallas on Monday to kick off a four-game week.

Sheppard was not in the starting five for Tuesday’s opener, with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka preferring to go with a big lineup that featured Amen Thompson at the point. Oklahoma City wasted no time attacking Sheppard in the half-court while forcing him to make plays offensively. With Jalen Williams (wrist), Isaiah Joe (knee) and Nikola Topić (groin) currently sidelined, there is a slight opening for Mitchell within the Thunder rotation. Tuesday’s opening night thriller required two overtime periods to determine a winner, but Thompson was not on the court for most of those 10 minutes. Returning to the city where he began his NBA career on Thunder ring/banner night, Durant struggled with his perimeter shot (0-of-4 from three) and finished with more turnovers (four) than assists (three) in the one-point defeat. Things could have worsened in the first overtime, as Durant was signaling for a timeout the Rockets did not have. However, the officials did not acknowledge the request, so the game went into a second overtime. Durant, who was excellent in the mid-range, will find his perimeter shot in time while getting more acclimated to an offense that currently lacks a legitimate point guard. With the Rockets resting most of their key players in their expected regular-season rotation, Okogie started and had the ultimate “green light” in Atlanta. Houston’s rotation for Thursday’s preseason finale was limited, as head coach Ime Udoka rested most of his key players. However, that decision opened things up for Sheppard, who took advantage of the opportunity. Sheppard’s role on Thursday did not resemble what he’ll be asked to do once the games count.
