Already playing without Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, the Thunder lost Jaylin Williams to a strained oblique during the first half of Sunday’s game. The result was even more playing time for Carlson, who had the best day of his NBA career. Not only did the rookie record season highs in points and rebounds, but this was also his first double-double. Unlike Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe, Carlson will not be in the Thunder playoff rotation, even if Williams misses time. But he undoubtedly made a positive impression with his play in New Orleans.

Joe did not have the best afternoon shooting-wise, making 33.3 percent of his attempts. The good news for managers in active category leagues is that he recorded solid numbers in the rebound and steals categories. Like Aaron Wiggins, Joe will be in the playoff rotation, but the role will be far different than in Oklahoma City’s final two regular-season games.

Even if one accepts that New Orleans is one of the NBA’s worst teams, Sunday’s victory was another example of Oklahoma City’s depth. Down most of their critical rotation pieces, the Thunder still rolled, with Wiggins among the standouts. In wins over the Jazz and Pelicans to end the season, he scored 63 points on 22-of-42 shooting from the field. Wiggins will be in the playoff rotation, but the role won’t be as robust as it was with players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams unavailable.

He struggled as a scorer in his first career start, but James was able to impact the game in other ways. He set new career highs for both assists and steals while playing a career-high 38 minutes. The Lakers rested their starters since this game had no impact on their place in the standings. It was good to get an extended look at the rookie, but he won’t be part of the rotation in the playoffs.

With the Lakers resting their key players for the postseason, Knecht was able to move into the starting unit and play an extended role. Knecht has been able to score a lot when he plays a large role, but he hasn’t been a large part of the Lakers’ rotation over the last few weeks. This was a strong way for him to close out his first regular season, but he will play sparingly in the playoffs.

Both players will be good to go in the regular season finale for the Lakers, which won’t have an impact on the standings with LA having already clinched the third seed in the West. Hartenstein and Holmgren’s continued absences mean Kenrich Williams and Jaylin Williams should remain in the starting lineup for Sunday’s regular-season finale. Sunday’s game will be the second straight missed by Caruso and the third for Wallace. Oklahoma City already secured home-court advantage throughout the NBA Playoffs, so most of their rotation players will be inactive on Sunday. The Lakers secured the third seed in the West with their win over the Rockets on Friday. Sunday’s rotation will look nothing like the core that will take center stage in the postseason next weekend. James aggravated his strained left groin during the third quarter of Friday’s win over the Rockets. With that victory, the Lakers secured the third seed in the West, so there’s no need for LeBron to play on Sunday. Friday’s victory secured the three-seed in the West for the Lakers, which would mean a second-round matchup with Houston if both teams got out of the first round. For that reason, Finney-Smith’s last two performances against the Rockets were notable. After shooting 6-of-11 from three in the Lakers’ March 31 win over Houston, he was 6-of-8 on Friday. From a fantasy standpoint, Finney-Smith provided the three-pointers and steals on Friday that many managers expect from him. We’ll see if he plays against Portland on Sunday, as nothing will be on the line for the Lakers.

Reaves and the Lakers were excellent on Friday, shooting nearly 61 percent from the field. Reaves made 66.7 percent of his attempts, finishing one block shy of a complete stat line. With Friday’s victory securing the three-seed for the Western Conference playoffs, it’s possible that Reaves does not play in Sunday’s regular season finale in Portland. If he gets the day off, Jordan Goodwin (3/6/3 with one three-pointer) and Gabe Vincent (one rebound, one assist and one steal) are two players whose playing time would increase.

The shorthanded Rockets, who played Friday’s game without four starters, had no answer for Doncic. He shot well over 50 percent from the field and did not see any action during the fourth quarter. Friday’s victory secured the three-seed for the Lakers, which may factor into Doncic’s availability for Sunday’s game in Portland. With LeBron James injuring his leg during the third quarter, that may be reason enough to sit Doncic for the regular season finale.

James suffered an apparent left leg injury during the third quarter of Friday’s game, exiting with 7:27 remaining. He did not return, with some wondering if the 40-year-old tweaked the groin injury that sidelined him for seven games in mid-March. However, the heating pad applied to James’ leg appeared to be on his quad. Following the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick said LeBron was “fine.” Friday’s victory secured the three-seed in the West, so there’s no reason for James to play in Sunday’s game against the Trail Blazers. Expect plenty of Dalton Knecht after the rookie only logged four minutes against the Rockets.

The Baylor product went undrafted in 2023 but has spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma City, mostly in the G League. He has played some garbage-time minutes this year, which have come often due to how frequently the Thunder blow teams out. Flagler had the best game of his young career on Friday, and he set career-highs for points, rebounds, assists and steals. He will likely play a significant role once again in the regular season finale in New Orleans on Sunday.

He had 22 points in the first half and kept it going after the break. Williams had a rough afternoon, shooting 3-of-10 from inside the arc. The positive for those who have J-Dub rostered is that he did not add to that issue by turning the ball over, as he did not commit any turnovers. Given where the Thunder are in the standings, ensuring their key players are healthy for the postseason is more important than putting up gaudy stat lines. Oklahoma City’s four-game Week 23 includes a back-to-back, so Williams managers in active leagues may only have him for three games.

The Lakers had an excellent defensive game plan for Sunday’s game, using a variety of looks to limit the Thunder to 99 points. They also successfully defended Gilgeous-Alexander without fouling, as he failed to attempt a free throw in a game for the first time this season. For just the second time this season and the first since November 27, James did not attempt a free throw in Sunday’s game.
