Williams, the 46th overall pick in June’s draft, will occupy the Celtics’ third and final two-way contract slot this season. The 7-footer, who began his college career at Drexel before transferring to Kentucky for the 2024-25 season, is a capable defender and facilitator. Last season, Williams led the Wildcats in assists, and his playmaking potential was also on display during summer league action.

Before transferring to Kentucky for his final season, Williams was a highly accomplished player at Drexel. The 6-foot-10 post won two CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards and was also a two-time all-conference selection. While the sledding was a bit more challenging in the SEC, Williams appeared in 36 games for Kentucky last season, averaging 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in 22.8 minutes. A native of England, Williams played soccer growing up, positively impacting his footwork. While the defensive prowess is what jumps off the page, he led the Wildcats with 115 assists this season, an indication that there’s the ability to make plays out of the post and the short roll. The Celtics traded back from 32, and this was the first of the two second-round picks they acquired in this draft. Williams could end up playing a significant role early on with Kristaps Porzingis now in Atlanta and both Al Horford and Luke Kornet entering unrestricted free agency.
