The rookie was impressive in his first two games, but this performance took things up a notch. Coward made all six of his attempts from deep to lead both teams in scoring. He didn’t contribute as much defensively, but he still has five steals through three games. The rookie only played six games at Washington State last year, but his transition to the NBA has gone really well. If he continues to play like this, it will be difficult to keep him in a reserve role.

Coward was solid in his debut, and he was productive in this game as well. He was the lone bright spot in this game for Memphis. He did finally miss a shot, but he was able to hit the first two triples of his career in the ugly loss. This is a game to forget for the Grizzlies, but for Coward, it was a continuation to a solid start to his young career. Next up for this team is the Pacers on Saturday, which is the second leg of a back-to-back.

Coward was impressive in his debut, especially defensively. The rookie was a pest on that end of the floor, and the three “stocks” don’t tell the entire story. Add in a highly efficient scoring effort, and the Grizzlies and fantasy managers were likely encouraged by what they saw. Coward’s perimeter shot is a work in progress, but that’s due to him returning from a torn rotator cuff rather than an inability to shoot. It would be unsurprising if Coward could turn his perimeter shot into a credible weapon down the line.

With Kentavious Caldwell-Pope out, Coward moved into the starting lineup for his second preseason game. The rookie guard once again struggled from three, missing all five attempts. However, Coward was more aggressive off the dribble and was rewarded for his efforts with seven free throws. Given the amount of time missed and the shoulder injury that limited him to six games in his final college season, it’s unsurprising that the rookie has looked rusty. Most important for the Grizzlies is that Coward made strides between his first and second preseason games. He’ll have every opportunity to earn rotation minutes once the regular season begins.

Wells and Aldama are the only holdovers from the five who started Monday’s loss to the Pistons. Ty Jerome, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jock Landale are out, with Small, Coward and Lovering filling the voids. Coward, the 11th overall pick in June’s draft, is the player to watch. He didn’t shoot the ball well on Monday, but that was his first game action since December due to a torn rotator cuff suffered during his final season at Washington State. Coward will be in the mix for rotation minutes this season and has value in dynasty leagues.

Coward, the 11th overall pick in this summer’s draft, was limited to six games at Washington State last season due to a rotator cuff injury and subsequent surgery. He did not participate in summer league but is expected to be a full go when the Grizzlies open camp on September 30. “That’s the best thing ever,” he said. “I haven’t played live competition since November,” Coward told the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. “For me, I do it every day now that I can. I don’t have to hold anything back. I don’t got people telling me to take a break and stuff. It’s like letting the wolves out. That’s what it is.” With Memphis trading Desmond Bane to Orlando during the offseason, there should be opportunities for Coward to earn rotation minutes. While the lack of activity will impact how he’s viewed in redraft leagues, Coward will be worth the investment in dynasty builds.

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Coward will be traded to the Grizzlies for the No. 16 pick, a 2028 first-round pick via Orlando and two future second-round picks. The move makes sense for Memphis after they traded Desmond Bane to Orlando. Coward started out his collegiate career with D3 Willamette before spending two years at Eastern Washington and his final season at Washington State. The 6’5, 213 pound wing averaged 17.7 points, seven boards, 3.7 assists, 2.5 “stocks,” and two triples per game while shooting eye-popping 60/40/84 splits. Coward can rebound and facilitate at a high level, but his biggest strengths are three-point shooting and defense, making him a solid three-and-D prospect at the next level. He’ll be a great fit alongside Ja Morant in Memphis’ backcourt.
