Cardwell, who has been out since spraining his ankle during one of the Kings’ first practices out of the All-Star break, practiced on Friday. Now absent from the injury report, he’ll be available on Saturday. While it may not happen immediately due to a possible minutes limit, Cardwell can be valuable during the silly season for managers needing rebounding and defensive stats.

Cardwell sprained his ankle in mid-February, and he was given a four-week re-evaluation timeline on February 18. His return to practice means Cardwell could be back in action soon, and fantasy managers willing to take a speculative risk should add him off the waiver wire and stash him in an IL spot.

Cardwell, an undrafted rookie who played well enough to earn a standard contract, sprained his left ankle during Tuesday’s practice. He’s the second center the Kings have lost recently, with starter Domantas Sabonis (knee) undergoing season-ending surgery. With Maxime Raynaud locked in as the starting center, the Kings will likely rely on Precious Achiuwa to take on the backup responsibilities.

The rookie center took advantage of increased minutes on Friday and logged arguably his best game as a professional. He’s notched back-to-back double-digit rebound games and could realistically carve out a consistent role with this team, given where they are in the standings at this point in the season. Cardwell recently signed a standard contract with the Kings after going undrafted and agreeing to a two-way deal.

Not selected in the 2025 draft, Cardwell joined the Kings on a two-way deal. The rookie forward/center has played well enough to earn a standard contract, and the Kings have gone well beyond signing him for the rest of the season. The first two years of the contract are guaranteed. Cardwell has not been a must-roster player in fantasy leagues, but he’s a player worth having for the “silly season,” as the Kings are likely headed back to the draft lottery.

In a three-team trade with the Cavaliers and Bulls, the Kings bid farewell to Dennis Schröder, Keon Ellis and Dario Šarić while adding De’Andre Hunter. That gave the team room to convert Cardwell, an undrafted rookie, from a two-way contract to a standard deal. While the former Auburn standout’s production has not significantly affected fantasy basketball, he’s done enough to earn consistent rotation minutes. And if the Kings can move another veteran or two before the trade deadline, Cardwell could prove valuable during the silly season.

Even with Domantas Sabonis (8/8/2 in 20 minutes) back from a knee injury, there has still been room for Cardwell in the Kings’ rotation. The undrafted rookie out of Auburn recorded his first double-double on Sunday, producing a stat line that only lacked a three-pointer. Cardwell is not a player who should be rostered in redraft leagues, but he may be worth holding onto in dynasty formats.

Cardwell, an undrafted rookie on a two-way contract, will make his first start as a professional on Saturday. And the assignment won’t be easy, as he’ll be tasked with defending Giannis Antetokounmpo. Russell Westbrook returns to the bench to make room for Cardwell in the lineup.
