The 76ers handled Tyrese Maxey’s absence with a committee approach, with multiple players taking on playmaking responsibilities throughout Friday’s victory. Edgecombe was among them, and he’s been responsible for at least five assists in three of his last five appearances. The rookie produced solid percentages, with the blocked shot category being the only one left empty. Rostered in 59 percent of Yahoo! leagues, Edgecombe has been a top-100 player in eight-cat formats over the past two weeks.

With Edgecombe playing 24 minutes in each of his three prior appearances, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said before Sunday’s game that the rookie’s minutes limit would increase “soon.” Sunday must have qualified as “soon,” since Edgecombe played 38 minutes against the Lakers. While the stat line wasn’t great, this is a spot where the increased playing time should be the focus. And with the 76ers off until Friday, Edgecombe has some time to work on his conditioning.

Edgecombe wasn’t the most impactful scorer on Thursday, but he did make the game’s biggest shot. His putback of a Tyrese Maxey fadeaway with nine-tenths of a second remaining gave Philadelphia the 99-98 victory, with the 76ers avoiding losing a game they led by at least 20 points after one quarter for the first time in franchise history. Despite averaging just 8.7 points per game, Edgecombe has been close to a top-50 player in eight-cat formats over the past two weeks. His production in the rebound, assist and steal categories has been a factor, as it was against the Warriors.

Edgecombe will be back after missing Philadelphia’s last three games. He’ll immediately return to the starting lineup, which will push Quentin Grimes back to his role as the 76ers’ sixth man. He’ll still play a large role, but Grimes won’t have the same upside as a reserve.

Edgecombe participated in Wednesday’s practice, but he still has not reached the point where he can play in games. Quentin Grimes has been his replacement in the starting lineup, and he should already be rostered in 14-team leagues. If Grimes is sitting on your waiver wire, there isn’t much to lose from picking up up while Edgecombe is out.

Whether he moves into the starting lineup or remains in a reserve role, Quentin Grimes will have added fantasy value and should be rostered where available. Jared McCain will also have more opportunities to contribute, but Grimes is the more reliable option.

Edgecombe led the 76ers in shot attempts on Wednesday, a bit of a surprise since Tyrese Maxey is also in the lineup. However, the rookie guard finished with a complete stat line and his first 20-point game since October 27. Despite the decrease in scoring since his hot start, Edgecombe remains a top-100 player in eight-cat formats while sitting just outside that threshold in nine-cat. The test for VJ will be what happens if Joel Embiid and Paul George are able to play without any restrictions at some point this season.

Edgecombe has started every game so far this season and played a ton of minutes. If he misses Friday’s game, Quentin Grimes will likely slide into a starting role. He has been excellent as a reserve this year and would likely be in for a big night.

Edgecombe had his first dud of the season and thus of his career. The 20-year-old rookie had seven points on 14 attempts from the field. It’s the first time this year he’s failed to reach double digits in scoring. Edgecombe will of course bounce back from a rough performance against one of the best teams in the conference, but he’s had 17 points or less in five consecutive games since scoring at least 25 points in two of the first three games of the year.

Edgecombe continues to be extremely impressive from a shot creation standpoint as he’s taken full advantage of his opportunities to make something happen with the ball in his hands. He took just four three-pointers in this one but still came close to reaching the 30-point threshold for the second time in his first three games of his career. He was extremely efficient overall, shooting just under 59 percent from the field. The third overall pick from the 2025 NBA Draft looked like an outstanding complementary scorer alongside Tyrese Maxey and is poised to make a significant fantasy impact as reliable scorer in his rookie season.
