Garland had 20 points and nine assists in the Cavaliers’ victory over the Wizards on Friday night, but he’ll sit out the second game of the back-to-back against the Bulls on Saturday. The 25-year-old point guard made his season debut on Wednesday against the 76ers after missing time with a toe injury and isn’t quite ready for a full workload just yet.

Friday night worked out perfectly for Garland and the Cavaliers. He was productive, and while there was a need to run up points for NBA Cup point differential reasons, Cleveland did not need to extend their starting point guard too far. The question now is whether Garland will be available for Saturday’s game against the Bulls. Before Friday’s victory, Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson did not rule out the possibility of Garland playing both games. Fantasy managers should consider him questionable, with Sam Merrill (14/2/2/1 with four three-pointers) and Jaylon Tyson (10/4/2/1 with two three-pointers) being potential replacements if Garland sits.

Garland missed the first seven games of the season as he recovered from offseason toe surgery. The 25-year-old point guard wasn’t as crisp as he might have been had he not missed all of training camp and the preseason as well. Garland was 3-of-11 from the field and scored eight points in 26 minutes. We can expect that it’ll only get better from here for Garland as his minutes and production increase as he gets more comfortable now that he’s active and playing.

Garland is back after missing Cleveland’s first seven games due to offseason toe surgery. While a specific minutes limit has not been revealed, it’s likely that Garland won’t be asked to take on a full starter’s workload in his first game back. His return shifts Donovan Mitchell back to the two, and Jaylon Tyson back to the bench.

Charania’s update still doesn’t give a firm return date for Garland, but it’s an encouraging sign that he’ll be good to go at some point during Week 3. If Garland can’t suit up by Wednesday, his next chance to return will come Friday against the Wizards.

Garland, who underwent toe surgery in the offseason, has yet to appear in a game this season. However, he did recently scrimmage with the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate and is “close” to a return. That’s great news for Cleveland, as Donovan Mitchell is dealing with a hamstring injury and will not play in Friday’s game against the Raptors. Garland still does not have an exact return date, but it’s on the horizon based on Atkinson’s pregame comments.

It’s an encouraging update for Garland as he continues to rehab from toe surgery that he underwent in June. Until Garland is back, Sam Merrill, Jaylon Tyson and Lonzo Ball will hold things down in the backcourt through a committee approach. Ball is the most appealing option because of his ability to assist and rebound, while Merrill is best deployed as a points and triples streamer.

Garland underwent toe surgery in June to address an injury initially suffered in March and aggravated during the postseason. While Atkinson did speak positively of the progress his starting point guard has made recovery-wise, Garland remains without a clear timeline for return. While the injury has pushed Garland down some draft boards, he’s well worth the wait. Fantasy managers can stash him in an IL+ slot, while those who select Donovan Mitchell may receive an early boost in the assists category.

Garland injured his right big toe during a March 23 game against the Jazz. He played through the injury until the postseason, when the Cavaliers’ point guard was forced to miss four games. Having undergone surgery in early June, Garland is progressing in his recovery. However, while he has resumed some on-court activities, he will be limited during training camp. According to Fedor, Garland could miss the regular season’s first 10-15 games. “He looks good. He’s stronger. He’s more stout. He has a great attitude. I think his mental is in the right place,” Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman said Tuesday. “The biggest thing is how do we start to ramp him up from a conditioning standpoint? That’s not something that can happen in two weeks. I think he’s had a really good offseason from a strength perspective.” Sam Merrill is expected to move into the starting lineup, which raises his fantasy ceiling, with Donovan Mitchell shifting over to point guard as the team awaits Garland’s return. Lonzo Ball and Craig Porter Jr. will provide depth at the point behind Mitchell, with the former being the more enticing fantasy option despite his injury history.

Garland picked up the injury on March 23 against the Jazz and played through it before ultimately missing time. He missed four of the Cavs’ final seven games of the regular season and Games 1 and 2 of the first-round playoff series with Indiana, re-aggravating the injury in the process. If Ty Jerome re-signs with Cleveland this offseason, he’s the guy most likely to replace Garland in the starting five. Donovan Mitchell’s usage rate spiked when Garland sat and he’d appear to be in line for some big fantasy lines early in the season while Garland is sidelined.

On a night when the Cavaliers needed Garland to be his best, the point guard could not rise to the challenge. Not only did he miss all six of his three-point attempts, but Garland was also responsible for five turnovers. His toe injury suffered during the first round did Garland no favors, but this was a disappointing way for him to end the 2024-25 season. While having a Yahoo! ADP outside the top-50, the Cavaliers’ point guard finished within that threshold in eight- and nine-cat formats. Playing alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley may limit his ceiling, but Garland’s fantasy floor is relatively safe.

It didn’t have much of an impact on the final score, but Garland was much better in the second half. He had 12 points in the third quarter alone before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. At that point, the score was simply too lopsided for Garland to continue. Still, it was good to see him have a productive night after he struggled in Game 3 and missed Games 1 and 2. With Donovan Mitchell (ankle) set to have an MRI on Monday, a lot of responsibility may fall on Garland’s shoulders to keep Cleveland’s season alive in Game 5 on Tuesday.

Friday’s game was Garland’s first since Game 2 of the Cavaliers’ first-round series against the Heat. He did look rusty, but the more concerning moment occurred during the third quarter. Garland appeared to have tweaked the toe injury that sidelined him for four games, but he was able to return later in the contest. Cleveland holding onto its gaudy lead ensured that Garland would not be extended too far in his first game back from injury. He’ll now rest up for Game 4 on Sunday night.

Garland is available after missing four games with a sprained left big toe. Given the stakes, with Cleveland trailing two games to none, the point guard will likely take on his usual workload in Game 3. Sam Merrill’s playing time will likely decrease with Garland in the lineup.

The news couldn’t come at a better time, as Shams also expects Evan Mobley and De’Andre Hunter to take the court. Cleveland fell behind 2-0 in the series with a wild final minute of Game 2 that culminated in a Tyrese Haliburton game-winning three-pointer. Teams down 3-0 in a series have never come back to win, so a victory on Friday is crucial in keeping the Cavs’ season alive. With Garland expected back, Ty Jerome will retreat back to the bench.

Due to a sprained left big toe, Garland has not appeared in a game since Game 2 of Cleveland’s first-round series against the Heat. While Sam Merrill started Game 1, he was moved to the bench for Game 2, with Ty Jerome taking over as the starter alongside Donovan Mitchell. The Cavaliers were also without Evan Mobley and De’Andre Hunter for Game 2, which impacted the lineup overall.

Garland sat out the Game 1 loss to Indiana on Sunday, and his availability will be crucial for Cleveland’s chances of taking Game 2. Sam Merrill started Game 1 in Garland’s place, but provided only a 6/4/4 line with two triples across 18 minutes.

With Garland practicing on Friday, there was hope that he would return to action on Sunday despite sitting out Saturday’s practice session. (It was a scheduled day off for Garland.) Unfortunately, the Cavaliers guard was not on the court during his usual pregame warmup time, and he has officially been ruled out for Sunday’s series opener. Sam Merrill started the final two games of Cleveland’s first-round series and will retain that role against the Pacers.

Garland practiced on Friday, and head coach Kenny Atkinson said this was a scheduled day off to see how his toe responded. His status for Game 1 on Sunday is up in the air, but this isn’t an alarming absence from practice. Garland missed Games 3 and 4 against the Heat, and Sam Merrill would likely continue to start if Garland remains out.

This will be a second straight absence for Garland after he also missed Saturday’s 37-point drubbing. Sam Merrill started in his place in Game 3 and should remain in that role once again, though Ty Jerome will also take on more minutes off the bench.

Garland did not play in Saturday’s Game 3 victory, a game the Cavaliers won by a 37-point margin. Sam Merrill replaced him in the starting lineup, but the point guard’s absence also meant more opportunities for Ty Jerome. Cleveland holds a 3-0 series lead, but that is not expected to factor into the medical staff’s thinking regarding Garland’s availability.

After holding serve in the first two games of the series, the Cavaliers will play Game 3 without their starting point guard. Initially questionable for Saturday, Garland is dealing with a sprained left great toe. Donovan Mitchell will be asked to shift into the point guard role, with Sam Merrill moving into the starting lineup. Merrill and backup guard Ty Jerome will take on additional minutes in Game 3.

Garland is officially questionable with a left great big toe sprain. He could end up being a game-time decision given the high stakes of the playoffs. Ty Jerome would be a candidate to move into the starting lineup and see additional minutes if Garland is ultimately ruled out Saturday.

Garland flirted with a double-double, coming up just an assist shy of the feat. His stellar performance, alongside Donovan Mitchell’s 30-point showing, was just the latest in the two-time All-Star’s spectacular season. The pairing will aim to put Cleveland in a commanding 3-0 lead when they take on the Heat in Saturday’s Game 3.

Cleveland’s backcourt was outstanding in Game 1, with Garland finishing one blocked shot shy of a complete stat line. After averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 three-pointers per game in two regular-season meetings with the Heat, he was far superior to those numbers on Sunday. Garland’s play prompted the Heat to play Davion Mitchell 34 minutes, as starter Alec Burks had no answer defensively. That will be something to watch in this series; if the Heat can’t slow down Garland and Donovan Mitchell, they’re in trouble. Game 2 is on Wednesday.

Garland will not play in Sunday’s regular season finale after leading the Cavaliers to a win over the Knicks on Friday. Mitchell will miss a fourth-straight game with a sprained ankle, but he should be fine to begin the playoffs next weekend. Cleveland is locked into the one-seed in the East and will sit most of its rotation players on Sunday. Craig Porter Jr. and Jaylon Tyson should play plenty against the Pacers.

As he did in Cleveland’s win at Madison Square Garden on October 28, Garland took over during the fourth quarter on Friday. The All-Star point guard shot 6-of-6 from the field in the final frame, with five of the makes occurring in the restricted area. Garland’s charge helped Cleveland complete their rally from a 23-point deficit to win a game that had no impact on their seeding for the upcoming playoffs. With Sunday’s opponent, Indiana, also locked into its seed, fantasy managers should not expect to see Garland playing 30-plus minutes in the regular-season finale.

Garland has scored at least 20 points just once in his last five games despite playing at least 30 minutes in all five games. The 25-year-old point guard has struggled with his shooting of late, but still managed to recored at least six assists in each of his last five games. Fantasy managers will take the assists and Garland will look to get his shot going again Sunday against the Kings.

While Garland’s final stat line would not be described as elite, it was a performance he and those who have him rostered needed. In his three prior appearances, the Cavaliers guard shot 34.8 percent from the field and averaged 16.7 points per game. Garland was considerably more efficient against the Knicks, and fantasy managers will also take the six assists. He’ll look to build on this performance when the Cavaliers visit the lottery-bound Spurs on Friday.
