After going off for 41 points on Saturday, Murphy was held in check by the Suns on Monday. With Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole unavailable, more of the offense will run through Murphy. And the Pelicans’ use of rookie Jeremiah Fears at the point has not negatively impacted Trey’s fantasy value. He’s providing third-round value in nine-cat formats, exceeding his Yahoo! ADP of 42. As long as he stays healthy, Murphy is more than capable of being a top-50 player in fantasy basketball at a minimum.

Murphy carried the offense for New Orleans in this game and ended up setting a new season-high for points, which matched his career-high. Murphy has finished with exactly 41 points three times in his career, but it wasn’t enough for them to get a win on Saturday. Still, it has been a slow start for Murphy, so this type of performance was encouraging. He’ll look to stay hot in Phoenix on Monday.

Murphy had scored at least 17 points in three consecutive games entering play Wednesday, but had just 11 points in a clunker of a performance against the Mavericks. It was the third time in eight games this year that the 25-year-old small forward has shot 27.3 percent or less from the field. Murphy’s stats didn’t jump off the page on Sunday, but it’s worth noting that he was able to tally back-to-back games of at least 17 points and five three-pointers. While the overall offensive production likely hasn’t met expectations from a fantasy basketball standpoint, it appears that Murphy has found his touch from beyond the arc after some early-season struggles. The fifth-year forward has also done solid work on the glass and appears to have made some strides as a passer through six games.

Murphy recorded solid points, rebounds, assists and steals numbers on Friday, a step in the right direction after he totaled 14 points on 4-of-19 shooting in the two games prior. More important may be that Murphy shot 5-of-10 from three after going 5-of-23 in his first four games. He’s a career 38.1 percent shooter from beyond the arc, so it was only a matter of time until Murphy found his stroke. New Orleans ends its Week 2 schedule on Sunday in Oklahoma City.

It was extremely surprising that New Orleans was unable to take advantage of Boston’s undersized frontcourt in this one, even with Zion Williamson out with a left foot bone bruise, as they wound up being outscored 46-38 in the paint. Murphy shot just 27 percent from the floor and failed to connect on all four three-point attempts as he failed to reach double-digit points for the first time this season.

Murphy had a rough season opener, and while he was better in this game, it wasn’t enough for New Orleans to get a win. He swiped his first three steals of the season and was far more productive on the offensive end. This was the last game of the week for New Orleans, but they have a four-game week coming up, which starts with the Celtics on Monday before they head out for a three-game road trip.

Murphy finally found his rhythm from beyond the arc on Thursday, after going 3-of-12 from deep through the first two preseason games. His output against the Magic topped his previous total coming into the evening, and he tied a preseason-high in points along the way. Murphy was enjoying a career-best season during the 2024-25 campaign before a shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. Now healthy, the path to another productive season seems clear.

If there’s a player on the Pelicans roster who fantasy managers appear high on, it’s Murphy, as his ADP is comfortably within the top 50. He’s coming off the best season of his NBA career, having established career-best averages in points, rebounds and assists. The lone negative for Murphy in fantasy basketball was that he only played in 53 games due to a torn labrum that ended his season in March. If he can remain healthy, Murphy can provide top-50 value, but he’s failed to hit the 60 games played mark each of the last two seasons.

Murphy underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in late March, a disappointing conclusion to what was the best season of his NBA career, number-wise. According to Dumars, the Pelicans forward has been scrimmaging for a few weeks and will not be restricted when the team opens training camp. With Dejounte Murray (Achilles) lacking a timeline for return, this is a massive season for Murphy, who will be New Orleans’ top offensive option on the wing. He can provide top-50 value, especially if Zion Williamson’s availability remains an issue.

Murphy injured his right shoulder during a March 17 game against the Pistons, and a labral tear was discovered in the ensuing MRI. A timeline for his return is unknown, but the Pelicans announced Wednesday that the procedure was successful. Murphy had a career year in 2024-25, averaging 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.7 blocks and 3.0 three-pointers per game. With Brandon Ingram traded to Toronto at the February deadline, the Pelicans clearly view Murphy as a critical piece in the team’s rebuild.

Despite a delayed start to the season, this was a healthy year overall for Murphy despite all the injury woes around him in New Orleans. That allowed him to enjoy a breakout season with averages of 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals and three triples per game. He was a fantasy superstar, but his year is officially over. There is no indication of a timeline at this point, but managers will be hoping that he is ready for the start of the 2025-26 season. Jordan Hawkins and Bruce Brown should see a bump in minutes over the final few weeks of the season.

While the Pelicans have not played CJ McCollum and Zion Williamson for both games of back-to-backs, that has not been the approach with Murphy. He’s been active for every game since January 12, a trend fantasy managers hope will continue throughout the season. While Murphy’s fantasy value since the All-Star break has taken a hit, he remains a top-50 player for the season. The only negative for fantasy managers is the schedule, as the Pelicans play 10 games during weeks 20-22, starting with a four-game Week 20.

As expected, Murphy led the way offensively for the Pelicans on a night when CJ McCollum and Zion Williamson were unavailable. The Pelicans wing has been one of the few bright spots in a brutal season, and fantasy managers have benefitted. While Murphy’s fantasy value since the All-Star break hasn’t been elite, he has been a top-20 player in nine-cat formats for the season. How much Murphy plays during the stretch run remains to be seen, but his Yahoo! ADP for next season should be much higher than the 97th spot it was at last fall.

Murphy III got off to a blistering start, scoring 11 of New Orleans’ first 19 points. He opened the game by bullying Jalen Green for a monster jam and hitting a deep three-pointer. His offense quieted down a bit after that, but his hot start propelled him to a game-high point total. Expect he and Zion Williamson to lead the charge on offense every night for the shorthanded Pelicans.

Regarding fantasy value, only Zion Williamson has been more productive than Murphy among Pelicans players since the All-Star break. While he did shoot 1-of-6 from three, Trey made 50 percent of his attempts from the field overall and provided solid value in the rebounds, assists and steals categories. Murphy has been ranked just outside the top-50 in eight-cat formats since the break, and his availability has not been a concern. That’s good news for fantasy managers, as the Pelicans will play three games in the final four days of Week 18.
