Johnson stepped up on the offensive end with Tre Johnson (hamstring), Will Riley (thumb), Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George all sidelined. The latter three were just getting a rest night, and they could be back to play Utah on Wednesday. Johnson wasn’t flawless, but he was able to provide some buckets as the offensive engine.

While Johnson’s inclusion in the Kyle Kuzma trade did not draw much attention then, the move east gave him a shot at consistent rotation minutes. The rookie guard averaged 27 minutes per game in his 22 appearances for the Wizards. While Johnson’s fantasy value remained extremely low, the chances of earning a rotation spot in Washington next season are far more realistic than they would have been in Milwaukee.

Johnson has now started four games in a row for the Wizards. The 20-year-old shooting guard played 29 minutes with Jordan Poole and Khris Middleton sidelined Thursday. The opportunity is there for Johnson right now, even though he fell mostly flat with an 11-point game against the Magic.

Johnson has started Washington’s last three games, logging at least 37 minutes in each appearance. And if Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart remain out, there’s no reason to believe the rookie’s playing time will decrease. As one would expect from a rookie, Johnson’s production has been inconsistent, but he’s scored 19 points or more in two of his last three appearances. He’s only shot 38.6 percent from the field over the past week, so fantasy managers have mostly stayed away. However, Thursday’s game against the Magic could be a good one to gamble on Johnson, as that is one of the lighter game days of Week 22.

Johnson made a spot start for the injured Khris Middleton. Fantasy managers that used the 20-year-old shooting guard as a streamer in deeper formats have to be pleased with his effort. Johnson had 20 points on 14 shots including three made three-pointers. He played a team-high 42 minutes. It’s unclear if Johnson will have staying power as it depends on how Middleton recovers from his injury.

The Wizards are without Khris Middleton for Saturday’s game, as he suffered a knee injury during Thursday’s loss to the Pacers. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Johnson, who is worth a roll of the dice in deep leagues. Middleton’s absence will also free up additional opportunities for Colby Jones off the bench.

Johnson made his third start of the season on Wednesday. The rookie offered solid value in the rebound and assist categories, but a 1-of-7 night from three dragged down the field-goal percentage. Johnson will have more opportunities before the season ends, either as a starter or a reserve. There isn’t much to gain from rostering the rookie guard, but keep an eye out for him the next time he’s allowed to start.

While it was initially reported that Colby Jones would move into the starting lineup, the Wizards announced that Johnson would be the starter shortly after. He and Champagnie step in for Khris Middleton and Kyshawn George, who are out due to injury. Johnson and Champagnie are worth streaming for this matchup, while Jones misses out on a boost to his fantasy value.

Just three days after scoring a career-high 14 points, Johnson broke that mark again and had arguably the best performance of his young career. It took a few weeks for Johnson to start seeing minutes for Washington, but he has now played at least 15 minutes in seven games. He has had at least three assists in all of those. That isn’t an impressive number, but for a 20-year-old that is still learning how to play with other young players on a bad team, it’s a great sign for the future.

Two days after Johnson had his highest-scoring game as a Wizard, he was able to top that number and set a new career-high for scoring. Johnson was pushed back to the bench after two games as a starter, but he was still able to play 23 minutes. The 20-year-old rookie should continue to play a significant role for Washington down the stretch as they continue to prioritize the development of their younger players. They’ll play the second night of a back-to-back in New York on Saturday, so if the veterans sit out, Johnson could return to the starting lineup.

For the first time in his career, the rookie was part of the starting lineup. He didn’t turn in a monster stat line, but Johnson was productive during his 35 minutes on the court, even if he was inefficient. Johnson just turned 20 years old in December, and Washington will make sure to get him plenty of development reps down the stretch of the season. This was an important milestone for him, and it wouldn’t be surprising if it wasn’t the last start of the season for him.

Johnson will replace Justin Champagnie in the starting unit, making this the first start of his career. Johnson recorded a 9/2/4/2 line in 18 minutes off the bench and should be more productive in an increased role.
