LeBron James (sciatica) will practice with the Lakers’ G League affiliate on Monday.

James has not appeared in a game this season, but he’s taking steps toward changing that soon. Cleared for contact activity last week, the 40-year-old forward will practice with the Lakers’ G League affiliate in South Bay on Monday. Until LeBron is cleared to return, the Lakers will lean on Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves to lead the way offensively.

LeBron James (sciatica) has progressed to “contact basketball activity.”

The 40-year-old and not appeared in a game so far this season as he battles sciatica. Progressing to contact drills is certainly a good sign, and the team says he’ll be reevaluated in approximately 1-2 weeks. Given his age and the desire to have him healthy for the postseason, it seems fair to assume that the team may wait another two weeks for that evaluation and to update his timeline. Luca Doncic and Austin Reaves will continue to carry the load for the Lakers in the meantime.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Wednesday that the team is eyeing the second or third week of November for the “general range” of LeBron James’ return.

James has yet to appear in a game this season, and based on Redick’s pregame comments, he’s still a few weeks away. While there is no specific timeline for a return, Redick noted that the team is eyeing the second or third week of November. That means the Lakers will continue to lean heavily on Austin Reaves, and when he returns, Luka Dončić. While Jarred Vanderbilt’s playing time has increased, he does not offer much offensive value.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports LeBron James (sciatica) will take a “patient approach.”

The expectation was that LeBron would return in early November, but they may push that timeline back by a couple weeks if needed. There’s no reason to rush the 40-year-old back, which means the Lakers will rely on Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves even heavier than normal until James is back in the lineup.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports LeBron James will be out for at least 3-4 weeks due to sciatica in his right side.

Due to a nerve issue in his right glute, James was unavailable when the Lakers opened training camp and did not play in Friday’s exhibition against the Warriors. According to Charania, the 40-year-old star forward has been diagnosed with sciatica and will not be available when the regular season begins. Despite his production over the years, James should not have gone earlier than the third round in fantasy drafts before Thursday’s update. Look for the news to knock him further down draft boards, with Austin Reaves’ value receiving a boost. Luka Dončić is already considered a top-5 pick by many, so LeBron’s extended absence is unlikely to be any change to his draft prospects.

According to head coach JJ Redick, Lebron James is “on his own timeline,” when asked about the superstar’s preseason availability.

James has been unavailable due to a glute issue, and Redick’s comments indicate no sense of urgency to get him back on the court for LA before the regular season tips off. James is expected to be ready for the season-opener against Golden State on October 21, though fantasy managers should continue to monitor his health in the coming weeks.

    Injury

LeBron James (glute) was unavailable when the Lakers opened training camp on Tuesday.

According to Lakers head coach JJ Redick, James is dealing with a nerve issue in his glute, hence the 40-year-old’s absence to begin training camp. The goal is for him to be fully healthy for the Lakers’ October 21 season opener against the Warriors, and the Lakers are exercising caution with James’ ramp-up process. “It’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game,” Redick said, according to ESPN. “He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on the body and he’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute. So, we’re just playing the long game with LeBron.” While he’s managed to fend off Father Time for this long, continuing to play at a high level, LeBron will turn 41 in December. He may not be a player you can select in the first round of standard drafts, but James’ early ADP places him in second-round territory.

The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Dan Woike report LeBron James hasn’t had any buyout or trade discussions with the Lakers.

The expectation is that LeBron will be with the Lakers for training camp. If you follow every single rumor that happens during the NBA offseason and read between the lines, you can see that LeBron has been pulling some stunts to create some drama. But if you look at the bigger picture, there isn’t really a move that makes sense for both the Lakers and another team that LeBron will also agree to, since he has a no-trade clause. The reality is that LeBron will be a Laker next year in what could be his final NBA season.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports LeBron James has picked up his player option for the 2025-26 season.

Sunday was deadline day for James, who had a player option worth $52.6 million for the 2025-26 campaign. He’s reportedly decided to pick up the option, meaning LeBron will be back for a 23rd NBA season. However, based on agent Rich Paul’s comments, there are questions regarding James’ future with the Lakers despite the player making it clear in the past that he hopes to remain with the franchise. James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain during the Lakers’ first-round series against Minnesota, but the expectation is that James will be good to go well ahead of training camp. Based on his Yahoo! ADP, James was expected to provide second-round value in standard leagues last season, and he met that expectation. Look for him to have a similar draft position even though he’ll turn 41 in December.

ESPN’s Dave Mcamenamin reports that LeBron James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee in Wednesday’s loss to Minnesota.

James suffered the injury when collided with Donte DiVincenzo in the fourth quarter of the closeout Game 5. The recovery time for the injury is 3-5 weeks, but James will have no need to rush back to the court after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs. It’s unclear if he’ll return for a 23rd season, but if he does, he should be recovered from this latest injury prior to training camp.

    Recap

LeBron James was undecided on his future when asked following Wednesday’s season-ending loss to the Timberwolves.

The 40-year-old James said he had not given much thought to what the future might hold for him, which is unsurprising since he was focused on the task at hand. But it’s a question that will hover over the Lakers franchise throughout the offseason, especially after acquiring Luka Doncic in early February. “I don’t have an answer to that,” James said. “Something I’ll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play. I don’t know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we’ll see.” James, who turns 41 on December 30, has a player option worth over $52.6 million for the 2025-26 season, and that may be reason enough to return for another run. Whatever he decides will significantly impact how the Lakers approach improving a roster that received little trust from head coach JJ Redick this postseason beyond starters James, Doncic, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, and veteran reserve Dorian Finney-Smith.

    Recap

LeBron James finished with 22 points (9-of-21 FGs), seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and one three-pointer against the Timberwolves in Game 5 on Wednesday.

James was awesome in Games 3 and 4, though Los Angeles wasn’t able to get a win in Minnesota. With their backs against the wall in Game 5, LeBron wasn’t able to replicate his two previous performances, and the Lakers’ season ended in the first round for a second straight season. Though there is no indication that James will retire as of now, he’ll be 41 for next season’s playoffs. He should be in for another strong year when he’s on the floor, but if the Lakers want to win a championship next season, they may prioritize rest for James more than ever during the 2025-26 season.

LeBron James finished Sunday’s Game 4 loss to the Timberwolves with 27 points (5-of-9 FGs, 15-of-18 FTs), 12 rebounds, eight assists, three steals, three blocks and two three-pointers in 46 minutes.

While James only had nine official field goal attempts, he was a frequent visitor to the foul line, boosting the final point tally. Unfortunately, the robust stat line was not enough to deliver the Lakers a win, and they’ll head home for Game 5 on Wednesday in a 3-1 hole. James did make some more personal history, however, moving into ninth on the NBA’s playoff career blocked shot list. The extra day off should be welcomed, as James played the entire second half on Sunday.

LeBron James had 38 points (13-of-21 FGs), 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, two blocks and five three-pointers in Game 3 against the Timberwolves on Friday.

It’s been a career full of outstanding performances for LeBron James and the 40-year-old small forward delivered yet another in Game 3. With Luka Doncic available, but dealing with a stomach bug, James carried the Lakers with 38 points and five made three-pointers. Los Angeles found themselves in a tie game with four minutes left before the Timberwolves pulled away. James scored almost as many points in Game 3 (38) as he did in the first two games of the series combined (40). It’s a quick turnaround for the Lakers who will look to avoid falling behind 3-1 in the series in Game 4 Sunday.

LeBron James contributed a strong line with 21 points (8-of-19 FGs), 11 rebounds, seven assists, one steal, one block and one three-pointer in Game 2 against the Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Game 1 was one to forget for LeBron, but he bounced back well on Tuesday. James didn’t match his five “stocks” from Saturday, but the entire team had a much better defensive performance after giving up 117 points in their last game. Offensively, James was better, but he still wasn’t his typical dominant self that we see come out during the playoffs. He’s 40 years old, so we’ll cut him some slack. Game 3 will be in Minnesota on Friday, and James will need to have a big night for the Lakers to reclaim homecourt advantage.

LeBron James shot 8-of-18 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line in Saturday’s Game 1 loss to the Timberwolves, scoring 19 points with five rebounds, three assists, two steals, three blocks and one three-pointer in 36 minutes.

Saturday’s game was the 288th of James’s playoff career, and he finished with a complete stat line. However, this was the first in which he failed to score at least 20 points since Game 5 of the Lakers’ 2023 first-round series against the Grizzlies. Based on what the Timberwolves were able to do in the final three quarters of Game 1, the Lakers are going to need more from LeBron moving forward. Game 2 is on Tuesday night.

LeBron James (groin) and Rui Hachimura (knee) are out against the Trail Blazers on Sunday.

James aggravated his strained left groin during the third quarter of Friday’s win over the Rockets. With that victory, the Lakers secured the third seed in the West, so there’s no need for LeBron to play on Sunday. Hachimura will also get some time off as the Lakers look to get everyone healthy for next week’s playoffs. Jordan Goodwin (foot) and Dalton Knecht should play plenty on Sunday, with the former considered probable on the initial injury report.

LeBron James (leg) finished Friday’s win over the Rockets with 14 points (6-of-11 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), four rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one three-pointer in 22 minutes.

James suffered an apparent left leg injury during the third quarter of Friday’s game, exiting with 7:27 remaining. He did not return, with some wondering if the 40-year-old tweaked the groin injury that sidelined him for seven games in mid-March. However, the heating pad applied to James’ leg appeared to be on his quad. Following the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick said LeBron was “fine.” Friday’s victory secured the three-seed in the West, so there’s no reason for James to play in Sunday’s game against the Trail Blazers. Expect plenty of Dalton Knecht after the rookie only logged four minutes against the Rockets.

LeBron James accounted for 19 points (9-of-16 FGs), three rebounds, seven assists, one steal and one three-pointer in 34 minutes in Sunday’s win over the Thunder.

For just the second time this season and the first since November 27, James did not attempt a free throw in Sunday’s game. However, he was efficient, shooting over 50 percent from the field and committing just two turnovers in the Lakers’ 126-99 victory. Over the past two weeks, James has provided top-25 value in eight- and nine-cat formats, unsurprising production for the future Hall of Fame forward. The Lakers play four games for managers whose leagues will be active during Week 23, starting with the Thunder on Tuesday.

James has had a few quieter scoring performances recently, but Thursday ended up being his highest-scoring game in nearly a month. It didn’t start out well, but LeBron scored 25 of his 33 points after halftime, though it didn’t end up being enough for the Lakers to get the win. The loss dropped them to fourth in the West, and they hold a one-game lead over Golden State heading into a matchup with the Pelicans on Friday. After that, they’ll wrap up the week in Oklahoma City on Sunday in a tough matchup.
