Murphy is back in the lineup after sitting out Wednesday’s loss to the Hawks, pushing Karlo Matković to the bench. The other change is McGowens, who will start ahead of Jordan Poole. His offensive ceiling is limited, but McGowens is a better defender than Poole.

McGowens was able to take on a larger role with both Trey Murphy (back) and Herb Jones (ankle) sidelined. He didn’t get the chance to start, but he played a season-high 37 minutes off the bench. He didn’t contribute much in other categories, but if Murphy and Jones remain out in Washington on Friday, McGowens will hold some streaming upside in deeper leagues.

With Herb Jones (ankle) sidelined, McGowens will slide into the starting unit in his place. McGowens had a solid five-game stretch as a starter earlier this season, scoring in double figures in three of those. However, on a day with 14 games, there won’t be much need to stream him in.

With Jordan Poole returning from a hip injury and Herb Jones making his second start since returning from a calf injury, there did not appear to be much room for McGowens in the Pelicans’ rotation on Thursday. Well, interim head coach James Borrego kept him in the rotation during the first half, and McGowens started for the ejected Jones to begin the third quarter. He had one of his best games as a pro, matching his career-high in scoring while not missing any of his five three-point attempts. While this performance isn’t enough to put McGowens on the radar of many fantasy managers, it’s clear that Borrego will give him opportunities if he continues to earn them.

With Trey Murphy, Herb Jones and Jordan Hawkins all ruled out due to injury, McGowens had more opportunities to contribute offensively in his second consecutive start. The wing, who’s on a two-way contract, recorded a career-high point total while shooting 50 percent from the field. McGowens’ fantasy value in Week 7 hinges upon Murphy’s availability. If Trey can play against the Timberwolves on Tuesday, there won’t be much to gain from adding McGowens to your roster.

The Pelicans are without Trey Murphy for Saturday’s game, as he sits with a sore right elbow. McGowens will fill the resulting void, giving him a shot at achieving fantasy relevance. However, managers should not feel obligated to stream him, as the wing is making his first start as a Pelican.

McGowens moves to New Orleans after spending the 2024-25 season with the Trail Blazers. While he spent most of his time with the team’s G League affiliate, he appeared in 13 games for Portland, averaging 2.5 minutes per appearance. Due to New Orleans’ perimeter depth, McGowens is unlikely to be a fantasy asset next season. The Pelicans have filled all three two-way slots, with Trey Alexander and Hunter Dickinson occupying the other two.

McGowens, who’s on a two-way contract, will miss Sunday’s season finale with a fractured rib. His absence does not impact fantasy basketball but ensures that Rayan Rupert plays extended minutes off the bench.
