Markkanen continues to score a decent amount of points despite struggling with his three-point shot this year. The 28-year-old power forward has shot above 36.4 percent from behind the three-point line in two of eight games so far this year. In one of those games, Markkanen managed to drop 51 points in an overtime victory over the Suns. He’s a career 37.1 percent three-point shooter and shot 37.3 percent from three-point range last year so his shooting should get better soon.

Markannen’s four-game streak of at least 30 points came to an end on Sunday, with inefficient shooting from deep and low volume from the free-throw line being some of the biggest factors. Sunday’s outing also marked his lowest field goal percentage of the young season. Still, the veteran forward logged a team-high in points and was one of two players to record more than 20 points. He’s off to a tremendous start to the season and is showing that his lower production last season may be more of an anomaly than anything else.

While he didn’t provide any defensive production on Friday, fantasy managers don’t roster Markkanen for that reason. It’s the offense, and he’s been on fire to start the season. “The Finnisher” has 32 points or more in four straight games, including a 51-point effort against the Suns on Monday. Markkanen attempted 12 fewer shots on Friday than in the first matchup between the teams, but still dropped 30-plus. Sunday’s matchup with the Hornets could be good for him, as Charlotte is 26th in defensive rating.

Based on his hot start, fantasy managers who decided to pass on Markkanen in drafts due to late-season tanking concerns may regret their choices. He’s scored 30 points or more in three straight games, a feat he did not accomplish during the 2024-25 season. Wednesday’s final stat line was robust, with the 32 points being supplemented by five rebounds and six “stocks.” Through four games, Markkanen is providing top-10 fantasy value, which may prompt some managers to entertain the possibility of selling high. That said, there’s nothing wrong with holding onto Lauri, either.

Not only did Markkanen set a new career-high for points, but he was able to have the first 50-point regular season game for the Jazz since April 7, 1998. It has been a strong start to the year for Markkanen after a down 2024-25 season; he is averaging 34.7 points and 4.7 three-pointers per game. Whether or not the Jazz trade him or keep him, he’s doing everything he can to improve his value. His fifth-round Yahoo! ADP is looking like a bargain at this point. He’ll look to stay hot with the Trail Blazers coming to town on Wednesday.

Despite struggling from beyond the arc, Markannen put together an efficient shooting performance overall as he made his way past the 30-point mark for the first time this season. The veteran forward led Utah in scoring and was one of five Jazz players to reach double figures. Markannen wasn’t involved much as either a rebounder or facilitator in his 36 minutes, nor did he accumulate any stocks. His fantasy production on Friday essentially came from his scoring and contributions from beyond the arc.

After an offseason full of trade speculation, Markkanen had his typical good game against the Clippers in the season opener. The 28-year-old power forward had 20 points and made 4-of-7 three-point attempts. He chipped in six rebounds and five assists as well. Markkanen can still be a top-50 fantasy player when healthy as he showed against the Clippers on Wednesday.

While starting point guard Keyonte George only dished out two assists on Thursday, frontcourt starters Markkanen and Walker Kessler combined for 13. Markkanen, responsible for five helpers, shot the ball well and was a steal shy of a complete stat line. Lauri’s production has not been the concern for fantasy managers since he arrived in Utah; it has been the front office’s willingness to tank. While the front office said all the right things during the offseason regarding their desire to compete this season, the Western Conference is loaded, and a potential first overall pick (AJ Dybantsa) is playing not too far down the road at BYU. Those circumstances conspire to push Markkanen down some draft boards, even if he’s good enough to finish safely within the top-50 in fantasy basketball.

Markkanen reached double figures as a scorer in his first outing of the preseason. Although the three-point shot didn’t fall for him, he was efficient inside the arc and earned a few free throws in his 18 minutes of game action. The veteran forward added some nice assists, as well, but didn’t have a massive impact in any single category. He’ll have one preseason game left to iron out the wrinkles before the regular season begins and he looks to bounce back from his least productive season as a member of the Jazz.

Markkanen will make his 2025 preseason debut on Monday, replacing Svi Mykhailuk in the starting unit. Markkanen played just 47 regular-season games for the Jazz last season, where he averaged his lowest points per game since 2021-22. The remaining four starters will make their third starts of the preseason against the Mavericks as they look to collect their first win.

Markkanen has been dealing with a wrist injury that was never expected to impact his availability to start the regular season, but it has kept him sidelined during the preseason. He’ll make his preseason debut against the Mavs.

Limited to individual workouts after suffering a wrist injury while playing for Finland at EuroBasket, Markkanen fully participated in Sunday’s session. Jazz head coach Will Hardy said Friday that the forward’s limitations were about maintenance rather than significant injury concerns. Sunday’s development should be taken as a sign that Markkanen is on track to be ready to go when the Jazz open the regular season on October 22.

Markkanen, who represented Finland at EuroBasket this summer, injured his wrist during his nation’s run to a fourth-place finish. However, Jazz head coach Will Hardy did not sound too concerned about the injury and its potential impact on the forward’s availability once the regular season begins. “It’s more maintenance. I’m lucky that I got to see this in San Antonio a bunch when guys were playing Eurobasket. They just competed really hard for a month and laid it all on the line,” Hardy said. “It’s nothing that we’re concerned about, but it’s just some bumps and bruises that we want to manage in this moment as he’s coming off of that. There’s nothing to be concerned about at all.” Markkanen was limited to 47 games last season, with the front office’s desire to improve its draft lottery odds being a factor. While the team has said it has no plans of tanking this season, the last two years have likely impacted how many managers view Markkanen, who isn’t guaranteed to be available during the fantasy playoff weeks. If he’s unable to get cleared for the start of the regular season, young players like Taylor Hendricks, Ace Bailey and Brice Sensabaugh will be worth a longer look in drafts.

Finland missed out on the nation’s first men’s EuroBasket medal on Sunday. A rally from 81-64 down with four minutes remaining fell three points short. Markkanen struggled from inside the arc against Greece, shooting 3-of-8, which matched his mark from three-point range. However, the losses to Germany and Greece should not detract from an excellent tournament overall for the Jazz forward. Overall, Markkanen did a good job of playing out of double-teams and was better off the dribble, improvements that should serve him well if they carry over into the 2025-26 NBA season.

Markkanen and Finland did not have enough firepower to keep up with Germany, which won Friday’s semifinal by a 98-86 final score. Defended by Franz Wagner for most of the game, the Utah Jazz forward struggled to get clean looks. However, Markkanen made history during the loss, becoming the second Finnish player to reach 500 career points in EuroBasket. Finland’s first-ever semifinal appearance ended in defeat, but they still have a chance to medal. Finland will face the loser of Friday’s second semifinal between Greece and Türkiye for third place on Sunday.

While Markkanen has led Finland throughout its run through FIBA EuroBasket, he had plenty of help in Wednesday’s quarterfinal victory. The Jazz forward was one of four double-digit scorers for the winners, with Mikael Jantunen’s 19 points leading the way. Unsurprisingly, Georgia devoted most of its attention defensively to limiting Markkanen, but he remained efficient while also contributing as a rebounder and shot-blocker. Next up for Finland will be either Germany or Slovenia in Friday’s semifinals.

It wasn’t the most efficient shooting performance from Markkanen, but he did lead the team in scoring in the upset win over Serbia. He was effective at the free throw line, which includes going 5-of-6 in the final minute to seal the victory. Finland will face the winner of France and Georgia on Wednesday.

Markkanen has been an offensive machine through the first three games of EuroBasket, averaging 32.3 points per game to help Finland move to 3-0. He’ll look to stay hot against Lithuania on Monday, but to this point, Markkanen has been unstoppable, which will hopefully carry over into next season with Utah.

Markkanen went ballistic in this one, more than doubling the point total of the next highest scorer, who came in with 21. The “Finnisher” went 13-of-22 from the field, 7-of-13 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe as Finland dismantled Great Britain. Markkanen has been an absolute menace in international play in recent years, and there’s no reason to think he’ll slow down any time soon.

Markkanen was matched by Sweden’s Ludvig Hakanson with 28 points, but Finland ended up getting the win. Markkanen has been able to carry the offensive load for Finland in recent years, and that should continue for the rest of EuroBasket as he prepares to be the focal point of the offense in Utah once again.

Finland won all three EuroBasket tune-up games, and Markkanen looks to be in mid-season form. Poland had no answer for the Jazz forward on Sunday, as he dropped 42 points in just under 24 minutes of action. Markkanen was a frequent visitor to the foul line, attempting 20 free throws on the day, and he shot over 50 percent from the field. After a somewhat disappointing 2024-25 season, the concern for fantasy managers will be how Utah approaches the upcoming campaign. Concerns that the team may once again look to game the draft lottery system, despite it not working out this season, may negatively impact Markkanen’s standing in drafts. He can offer elite value when allowed to take on a primary scoring option’s usual workload.

With the Jazz in the midst of a rebuild, there have been questions regarding Markkanen’s future with the franchise. However, while John Collins and Collin Sexton were traded this offseason and Jordan Clarkson’s contract was bought out, the team reportedly does not plan to move Markkanen. “It would be too much to describe Markkanen as untouchable, but the Jazz still project the All-Star forward as a key player in their future core,” MacMahon wrote. In addition to how he’s viewed within the franchise, Markkanen’s contract may deter some teams. Last August, he agreed to a five-year extension worth $238 million. Utah still needs some veterans to lead the way for their young roster, which is why Markkanen remains so valuable to the franchise.

Markkanen’s timetable for return is set for 7 to 10 days while Collins is only certain to miss at least a week. Fantasy managers should expect to see a lot more KJ Martin and Kyle Filipowski in the meantime.

Fantasy managers who have Markkanen rostered should operate under the assumption that he won’t help them during Week 22. If he returns, that’s great, but the Jazz forward’s minutes will likely be capped. Williams is also unavailable and will miss another opportunity to play rotation minutes. Brice Sensabaugh and Kyle Filipowski will play plenty as Utah plays out the rest of the season.

This will be a sixth-straight absence for Markkanen, which means that Cody Williams should continue to start. The 10th overall pick last summer, Williams has been incredibly disappointing as a starter in place of Markkanen. Brice Sensabaugh is a better streaming option despite coming off the bench.

Markkanen will miss a fifth-straight game, with Thursday’s absence due to return to competition conditioning. As for Clarkson, he will miss a second-straight contest after logging 23 minutes on Sunday. Fantasy managers should be all-in on Isaiah Collier, Kyle Filipowski and Brice Sensabaugh, as they’re guaranteed to play as long as they’re healthy.

Markkanen will remain out with an illness as the Jazz look to increase their chances of winning this spring’s draft lottery. Even if he comes off the bench, fantasy managers should roster Kyle Filipowski for the rest of the season. The rookie started alongside Walker Kessler on Sunday, which boosts his fantasy value.

After missing two games for personal reasons, Markkanen’s absence on Sunday will be due to an illness. While Cody Williams may remain in the starting lineup, Brice Sensabaugh offers significantly higher fantasy upside, especially on the offensive end of the floor. Kyle Filipowski is also worth adding, even if he continues to come off the bench.

After missing Wednesday’s game against Washington, Markkanen will remain out again when Utah takes on Boston. Cody Williams should get another start in his place, with Brice Sensabaugh filling out the reserve minutes. Sensabaugh has been the more productive player.
