Niang was given a two-week timeline for re-evaluation on September 27, but he’s still not ready to return. The new evaluation on October 12 means he’ll be sidelined through the start of the regular season. Once he’s back on the court, there’s no guarantee Niang will play enough minutes to be a viable fantasy option in 12-team leagues.

Per a team release, Niang suffered a stress reaction in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot during offseason training. As a result, he’ll be sidelined for two weeks before the team’s medical staff re-evaluates the veteran forward’s foot. Niang was traded twice this offseason, first being sent from Atlanta to Boston before the Celtics moved him to Utah. Once healthy, he’ll play rotation minutes, but the question is how much due to Utah being in the midst of a rebuild.

The deal also sends two second-round picks from Boston to Utah as part of the deal. Moving Niang is just a financial move for the Celtics, but his departure thins out Boston’s rotation even further. Sam Hauser and Baylor Scheierman could see more playing time for the depleted Celtics. Niang’s role in Utah is more difficult to forecast, as the Jazz are already deep in the frontcourt.

Niang was traded to Atlanta at the trade deadline last season and immediately provided a veteran presence in the rotation. He had some big nights from beyond the arc, and with Jayson Tatum (Achilles) set to miss at least most of next season, Niang could be part of the rotation in Boston. However, this was simply a move for the Celtics to avoid the second apron.

Niang put together another strong outing on Friday to add to his recent stretch of good performances. Including Atlanta’s play-in tournament loss to the Magic, Friday’s double-digit outing marked the fourth consecutive for the nine-year forward out of Iowa State. Niang settled in nicely and found a role with the Hawks after being traded from the Cavaliers earlier this season. He’ll likely be a deep-league option in fantasy leagues next season.

Niang and LeVert have bolstered their numbers since joining Atlanta and both had solid performances against 76ers. Vit Krejci and Garrison Matthews can absorb some of LeVert’s minutes while Dominick Barlow has a chance to snag some backup power forward minutes.

The Hawks already know their playoff seed and play-in tournament matchup, as they’ll visit the Magic early next week. Niang and LeVert are among the rotation players listed as questionable for Sunday. If they don’t play, the Hawks will likely give Terance Mann and Vit Krejci additional minutes, to name two players absent from the initial injury report.

Niang’s inconsistent production makes him a challenging player to trust in fantasy leagues. However, his place within the Hawks’ rotation has made him worth a look in some deep leagues. Niang did not shoot the ball well on Saturday, but he did replace Mouhamed Gueye (six points, three rebounds, one assist and one block in 17 minutes) in the lineup to begin the second half. The minutes are there, but the production has not been recently, with Niang reaching double figures in two of his last five appearances.

Niang had an excellent weekend off the bench. After scoring 23 points in Saturday’s win over the Warriors, he tallied 20 more against the 76ers. However, Niang remains a player who does not need to be rostered in most leagues. Ranked outside the top 200 in eight-cat formats over the past two weeks, the Hawks forward is rostered in just seven percent of Yahoo! leagues. Caris LeVert (7/3/7/1/1 with one three-pointer) remains the superior option among Hawks reserves.

After scoring 18 points on 6-of-23 shooting in the three games prior, Niang was outstanding on Saturday. The 23 points are the most he’s scored in a game since March 6, and this was his first game with at least five three-pointers since February 23. Niang and Caris LeVert (14/2/6 with one three-pointer) have boosted their values since joining the Hawks at the trade deadline, with the latter being the superior deep-league asset. The Hawks play three games during Week 21, starting with the Rockets on Tuesday.

Niang’s tenure in Atlanta has been inconsistent as he has alternated between scoring in double figures and scoring less than 10 points basically every other game since he made his debut for the Hawks one month ago. However, Thursday’s performance was one of his best. This was his third 20-point game with Atlanta, and he has provided them with much-needed floor spacing off the bench. This was also his fourth game with at least four three-pointers for the Hawks. He has been an incredible addition for them, but that hasn’t resulted in much fantasy production.

Niang missed Monday’s game against the Grizzlies with an illness, but the 31-year-old small forward isn’t listed on the injury report for Tuesday. Niang should be available as the Hawks take on the Bucks. He’s seen an increase in fantasy value since coming over to Atlanta in a trade from the Cavaliers.

Niang’s fantasy value has increased since he was traded from Cleveland to Atlanta at the February deadline. His absence may result in starter Mouhamed Gueye playing more than usual, but he has not been a factor in fantasy basketball. Terance Mann will also have added value; fantasy managers may be better off targeting him than Gueye.
