Powell is back after sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Nuggets. His absence did not result in another post player entering the rotation, as Anthony Davis and Daniel Gafford split the minutes at the center position. Powell’s return may enable Davis to play a few more minutes at power forward, but he’ll get most of his run at the five.

Powell had previously been listed as questionable but is now expected to be sidelined against Denver. However, with Anthony Davis and Daniel Gafford healthy, Powell’s absence won’t impact the Mavs’ rotation.

The Mavericks are without their three best interior players for Saturday’s game, with Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford sidelined due to injury. So, Powell will move into the starting lineup, with Moussa Cisse serving as his backup. Despite receiving the starting nod, Powell offers a lower ceiling than Cisse in this spot.

After playing eight minutes or less in Dallas’ first three games, Powell picked up the dreaded DNP-CD in Monday’s loss to the Thunder. However, Powell’s name was called with Anthony Davis (leg) joining Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford on the sideline during the first quarter of Wednesday’s game. And the veteran answered, recording season-highs in points, rebounds and blocked shots. He only attempted six shots, but a 10-of-12 night at the foul line boosted Powell’s point total. There’s no need to add him, but that could change if the Mavericks are forced to play without Davis, Lively and Gafford.

Powell had until Tuesday to decide whether or not he would activate his player option for the 2025-26 season. Per Stein’s report, the veteran center had made his decision a few days early, deciding to pick up the option worth $4 million. Powell appeared in 55 games this season but only averaged 10.0 minutes, his lowest mark since the 2014-15 season. He did not impact fantasy basketball this season, and that’s highly unlikely to change in 2025-26.

Powell replaced Max Christie in the starting five for Friday’s game, and the Mavericks may have been better off sticking with the smaller lineup. The veteran center offered little value in his role, while Christie (two points, four rebounds) shot 1-of-13 from the field. Add in Kessler Edwards (12 points, six rebounds, one steal, four blocks and two three-pointers) having a productive night, and there’s no need to consider streaming Powell for Sunday’s game against the 76ers.

Powell is the lone change to the Mavericks’ starting five, as Dallas needs to account for the presence of Alperen Sengun in the Rockets’ lineup. Max Christie has moved to the bench. However, while his fantasy ceiling is lower, he should still be rostered in deep (and some standard) leagues.

Powell only played six minutes on Sunday, as a third-quarter collision with teammate Kessler Edwards ended his day. Powell received seven stitches to close a gash on his forehead and did not return. While Edwards suffered a cut over his left eye, he was able to return to Sunday’s game during the fourth quarter. Dallas finished Sunday’s loss with seven available players and may have similar issues for Monday’s game against the Spurs, as Dante Exum and Caleb Martin are under minutes restrictions due to their recent injuries.

Due to a combination of injuries and Moses Brown’s 10-day contract expiring, the Mavericks have made three changes to their lineup. Edwards and Powell will start for PJ Washington (ankle) and Brown, while Exum’s inclusion pushes Max Christie to the bench. Of the three new starters, Exum may be best equipped to provide some semblance of fantasy value. And fantasy managers who have Christie rostered should hold onto him.

Powell returned Tuesday and logged 16 minutes, finishing with two points, five boards and a block. Despite multiple injuries across Dallas’ frontcourt rotation, Powell isn’t an attractive streaming option.

Before Tuesday’s game, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Powell would be limited to 10-12 minutes in his first game back from a hip injury. He played 16 minutes and replaced Kessler Edwards (four points and three rebounds in 13 minutes) in the lineup to begin the third quarter. Powell did not provide much value outside of rebounds, and that isn’t enough to make him worth streaming while the Mavericks are shorthanded in the frontcourt. However, consistent rotation minutes won’t be an issue for Powell as long as he remains healthy.
