Payton recorded a statistical oddity Friday against the Heat as the 31-year-old point guard put up a double-double with 10 rebounds and 13 assists. Payton was also -41 in 29 minutes as the Pelicans lost to the Heat by 49 points. Payton has been a reliable assist man in the final weeks of the regular season, though he hasn’t provided much else outside of the 10 rebounds Friday.

Alvarado returns from a calf injury that sidelined him for Thursday’s loss to the Bucks. However, he replaces Antonio Reeves in the starting lineup, not Payton. The other change of note is Kelley, who will start due to the absences of Yves Missi and Karl Matkovic.

After making his first appearance in nearly a month on March 21, Payton has reached double figures in assists in two straight outings. He racked up 14 in a March 24 win over the 76ers and had another 10 against the Warriors. Payton should not be rostered since he isn’t guaranteed to be active. When he is active, the veteran point guard serves as Jose Alvarado’s backup. Alvarado played 27 minutes on Friday, finishing with 10 points, three rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot. Only rostered in 16 percent of Yahoo! leagues, Alvarado is the player who should be added by fantasy managers needing a point guard at this stage in the season.

Payton made his second appearance on his current 10-day contract and was immediately able to make a huge impact in the assists category. He wasn’t able to match his 21-assist performance from November, which also came with New Orleans. However, it was still an excellent night for him. Despite this being Payton’s 15th appearance this season, with six of those coming with Charlotte, he is one of 12 players to have at least 14 assists in a game twice this year. They don’t play again until Friday, but if he gets the minutes, he should be a solid source of dimes this weekend.
