The Grizzlies announced Saturday that Pippen will need to undergo a sesamoidectomy to address discomfort in his left big toe. While the team has officially released no timeline, as Pippen has yet to undergo the procedure, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the guard could be out for at least 12 weeks. Given the sprained ankle that sidelined starter Ja Morant during the preseason, not to mention his injury history, the Grizzlies are in trouble at point guard. While Morant is “progressing well” in his recovery, according to head coach Tuomas Iisola, it isn’t guaranteed that he’ll be available when the regular season begins next week. Ty Jerome, whose fantasy value would have increased with Saturday’s news, injured his calf during Friday’s preseason finale.

Due to Ja Morant (hip) being unavailable, more was needed from Pippen, even if he was already in the starting lineup. He undoubtedly answered the call, matching his career-high point total, and the rebound tally was the best of his NBA career. Having entered the 2024-25 season as a fantasy afterthought, Pippen finished as a 12th-round player in eight-cat formats. He’s on a guaranteed contract for next season and, regardless of who’s hired as the next head coach, will be worth grabbing with a late-round pick in 12-team leagues. In addition to Pippen’s production, Morant’s injury history makes this a worthwhile dice roll.

After totaling 15 points on 5-of-21 shooting in the first two games of this series, Pippen recorded one of his best stat lines of the season in Game 3. However, much of his offensive production occurred before halftime, as Memphis was on a roll. Pippen shot 7-of-10 from the field in the first half, but the Grizzlies’ offense would grind to a halt once Ja Morant exited with a hip injury. Pippen’s final stat line was impressive, and he’ll need a similar effort in Saturday’s Game 4, especially if Morant is unable to play.

During the regular season, the Grizzlies went with Vince Williams Jr. as the fifth starter after losing Jaylen Wells to a fractured wrist. However, Pippen was the choice on Tuesday, with his inclusion shifting Ja Morant off the ball. Pippen was solid but not spectacular; we’ll see if the Grizzlies stick with this lineup when they host Dallas or Sacramento on Friday. Williams only played three minutes, going scoreless with one rebound and one assist.

Memphis is sitting its top rotation players for Sunday’s game, as they will be the seventh or eighth seed in the West, depending on the results. With Pippen and Ja Morant out, Cam Spencer should play heavy minutes, with Yuki Kawamura likely moving into the rotation. Spencer is the player worth targeting in active deep leagues.

Pippen and Kennard are among the Grizzlies’ rotation players listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. Memphis’s loss to the Nuggets on Friday locked them into the play-in tournament; Sunday’s results will determine if they’re the seventh or eighth seed. With Pippen and Kennard unlikely to play, Yuki Kawamura and Cam Spencer should play rotation minutes out of necessity.

Pippen continues to have success as he filled in as a starter for an injured Ja Morant for the third-straight game. The 24-year-old point guard has had at least 15 points and at least five assists in each of the last three games. On Thursday, he even contributed five steals on the defensive end. With Morant out, Pippen is a fantasy asset as a priority streamer.

Ja Morant continues to miss games, and SPJ continues to impress with his new opportunities. Pippen Jr. has averaged 16.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.7 triples across his last three games. Those numbers are good for a top 30 ranking in fantasy hoops over the last week. Rostered in less than a quarter of Yahoo! leagues, Pippen Jr. is worth an add off the waiver wire.

Head coach Taylor Jenkins hasn’t always turned to Pippen to start when Ja Morant is out of the lineup, but he did on Friday. Though it didn’t result in a win for the Grizzlies, it was a strong performance for Pippen. He was able to contribute value across the board while maintaining efficiency as the starting point guard. He had been playing well as a reserve entering this game, so perhaps the starting nod was Jenkins’ way of rewarding him. He’s provided third-round value over the past two weeks, mostly because he has averaged 5.1 assists and 2.4 steals during that stretch.

Memphis will be making some changes to the starting lineup after dropping two consecutive games. Pippen Jr. and Aldama will replace Luke Kennard and Zach Edey in the opening unit. It is an interesting adjustment against Ivica Zubac since this will be a smaller starting unit for Memphis, though Pippen Jr. will provide them with a true point guard presence in the starting lineup.

Pippen missed Monday’s game against the Kings and was questionable Wednesday with a wrist injury, but ultimately played 31 minutes off the bench with Ja Morant out. The 24-year-old point guard’s 18 points were the most he’s had in a game since January 6. Pippen is merely a deep league option when Morant is unavailable.

Pippen is dealing with a sore left wrist, hence his appearance on the Grizzlies’ injury report. With Ja Morant (shoulder) out, a few more minutes may be available to Pippen if he can play. However, Luke Kennard has been the starter on nights when the Grizzlies are without Morant. Kennard is worth streaming in deep leagues, with Morant’s absence also raising Desmond Bane’s fantasy ceiling.

Pippen Jr. came off the bench Monday and played 27 minutes, which was the third-most on the Grizzlies. The 24-year-old point guard had 13 points, but otherwise didn’t have a major impact on the game. Pippen Jr. could continue to see more playing time with all the injuries Memphis is dealing with, but his production leaves something to be desired.

Pippen played just 16 minutes off the bench Monday against the Hawks with Ja Morant out. With Morant back Wednesday, it’s possible Pippen will fall out of the Grizzlies’ rotation. The 24-year-old point guard doesn’t have much fantasy value going into the matchup against the Thunder.

Pippen played 16 minutes off the bench in Monday’s loss to the Hawks, as the Grizzlies employed a starting backcourt of Luke Kennard and Desmond Bane. If Ja Morant can return from his shoulder injury, Pippen will likely fall out of the rotation whether or not he’s healthy or not.

Pippen shined as a starter for the injured Ja Morant earlier this season, so it’s unsurprising he recorded a solid stat line on Saturday. He’s had better nights shooting the basketball, but the assist tally was useful. Pippen’s fantasy value depends on Morant’s availability; there’s no need to hold onto him if Ja is available for Monday’s game against the Hawks.

The Grizzlies are without Ja Morant and Desmond Bane, and Zach Edey has been moved to the bench for matchup reasons. Pippen, Konchar, and Aldama move into the starting lineup, with Aldama being the superior streaming option. However, all three are worth a look due to the Grizzlies’ injuries.
