Small played 21 minutes in the blowout win, but this is still an important data point, even if he won’t play that much regularly. With Ty Jerome (calf) and Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe) set to miss extended periods of time, Small is the backup behind Ja Morant, who has been managing an ankle injury. If Morant ever misses a game, Small will start, and he showed in this game that he can provide assists.

Small put the finishing touches on a productive close to the preseason, lighting it up from deep on Friday and making his way to double figures as a scorer on efficient shooting. He concluded the night as Memphis’s leader in three-point makes and one of the team’s top scorers and facilitators. Small likely won’t be in the Grizzlies’ nightly rotation, but he does leave the preseason with some positive momentum heading into his rookie campaign.

The rookie got the start on Wednesday with Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. not playing, and he took advantage of the opportunity. The second-round pick out of West Virginia will likely spend most of his time in the G League this season, but if Memphis deals with injuries in the backcourt, he could have some streaming appeal if he’s given the opportunity to play big minutes, though that will likely require multiple injuries to the guys ahead of him.

Small, the 48th overall pick in June’s draft, showed why the Grizzlies signed him to a two-way contract on Sunday. The former West Virginia standout was efficient as a scorer and playmaker in the summer league finale, shooting over 50 percent from the field and recording an impressive 9-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Given Memphis’ depth at the point guard position, fantasy relevance may not be in the cards for Small as a rookie. However, this franchise has not hesitated to give young players a chance in the past, especially in spots where an injury replacement is required.

Small was selected with the 48th pick this summer and was able to provide some dimes in his first taste of Summer League action. However, with Ja Morant, Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. in front of him in the rotation, it is unlikely that Small is in the rotation next season. Still, it is good to see him play well.

The 6’1, 190 pound Small spent two years at East Carolina and a year at Oklahoma State before arriving in Morgantown to play for WVU during the 2024-25 campaign. Small earned All Big 12 honors and AP All-American Honorable Mention with the Mountaineers behind averages of 18.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.6 triples. Small is a three-level scorer and strong playmaker who brings intensity and energy on defense despite his diminutive stature. Small’s quality two-way play can give him plenty of opportunities at the next level. Small will provide some point guard depth behind Ja Morant and Scotty Pippen Jr., which isn’t a clear path to minutes.
