Simpson is dealing with a sprained left AC joint, but he should ultimately be cleared to play based on the probable tag. While rotation minutes have become available with LaMelo Ball unavailable, Simpson hasn’t done enough to merit being rostered in fantasy leagues.

While Simpson didn’t have the best night shooting the basketball, his leadership throughout the summer league contributed to the Hornets’ winning the title. In Charlotte’s first five games, the second-year point guard averaged 5.8 assists and 2.6 turnovers per game. With Simpson again on a two-way contract and a healthy LaMelo Ball running the show, his ceiling will be limited next season. However, there may be moments when Simpson is worth streaming if Ball’s injury struggles continue.

Simpson cleaned some things up after shooting poorly in Saturday’s win over the 76ers. In addition to improving his shooting, the point guard committed just one turnover on the evening. Due to Charlotte’s depth at the point, Simpson’s chances of entering next season as a fantasy-relevant player are slim. However, due mainly to LaMelo Ball’s injury history, there may be opportunities throughout the season for Simpson to step into a larger role.

Simpson did not have a great evening shooting the basketball, but the 2024 second-round pick still led the Hornets in scoring on Saturday. While these summer league games are undoubtedly crucial for Simpson as he looks to establish himself as a pro, the path to fantasy relevance will be challenging to navigate. In addition to having LaMelo Ball, the Hornets re-signed Tre Mann and acquired Collin Sexton from the Jazz. Add in former first-round pick Nick Smith Jr., and Simpson’s opportunities to transition from two-way contract player to earning a standard deal will be limited.

Sunday’s start was the sixth for Simpson since the Hornets ruled LaMelo Ball (wrist, ankle) out for the rest of the season. While the rookie’s fantasy prospects for next season don’t appear promising, these games allow KJ to show he can potentially serve as Ball’s backup. Sunday’s performance was arguably his best of the season, with Simpson tallying a season-high 18 points. Rostered in two percent of Yahoo! leagues, KJ has provided ninth-round value in eight-cat formats over his last six games.

Simpson has started Charlotte’s last five games, reaching double figures in points on three occasions. During this period, the rookie point guard has averaged 11.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.6 three-pointers while shooting 39.3 percent from the field. While that has only been good for 13th-round value in eight-cat formats, the opportunity makes Simpson worth a look for deep-league managers desperate for an available point guard. The Hornets end Week 22 at home against the Bulls on Sunday.

Earlier Friday, it was announced that LaMelo Ball (wrist, ankle) is out for the rest of the season. Simpson will replace him in the starting lineup, and the two-way rookie is eligible for every game the rest of the way. He’ll likely retain the role for the foreseeable future, with Damion Baugh potentially getting a few opportunities when he’s active. Baugh is inactive for Friday’s game.

With LaMelo Ball sitting out the second leg of Charlotte’s back-to-back, Simpson was called up from the G League and immediately slotted into the starting unit. He has started in his last three appearances, but this was also the first time that Simpson played in a game since February. Even if he is productive when he is given the opportunity, the lack of clarity in when he’ll be available to play makes him a headache to roster.

After being listed as inactive for five straight games, Simpson has started Charlotte’s last two with LaMelo Ball (ankle) sidelined. During this two game stretch, Simpson has averaged 13.5 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists, two steals and one three-pointer per game. If Ball remains out for Charlotte’s matchup with Washington on Saturday, Simpson should be in line for another start. With Charlotte at the bottom of the standings, managers should expect to see Simpson on the floor often as the season winds down, and he should hold plenty of value if he remains in the starting lineup.

Simpson moved into the starting lineup Tuesday with LaMelo Ball (ankle) out again. The 22-year-old point guard has played at least 30 minutes in three straight games now. Simpson hasn’t been particularly effective in any of those games and Charlotte has lost all three outings. It doesn’t appear that he’s much of a fantasy asset at the moment, but he’s certainly getting a bunch of minutes lately.
