With Egor Dëmin unavailable due to a plantar fascia tear, Traoré and fellow rookie Ben Saraf have made up the point guard rotation for the Nets’ first two preseason games. After Safar received the starting nod in Brooklyn’s opener, Traoré was part of the first unit on Friday. Both provided limited production, with Saraf (9/1/0/1) logging 19 minutes and Traoré 17. While there remains hope that Dëmin will be healthy by opening night, Traoré or Saraf could be Brooklyn’s starting point guard on October 22 against Charlotte.

Traore was one of five first round picks for the Nets this summer, and he came off the bench in his preseason debut. Despite the absence of Egor Demin, Traore didn’t get the start, with coach Jordi Fernandez opting to open with Ben Saraf. It was good to see Traore on the floor in a Nets jersey, but he likely won’t make a consistent statistical contribution this season.

Traoré has been solid this summer, but this was a rough performance for him. Egor Demin and Danny Wolf were out, which made this a great opportunity for Traoré to take on extra responsibility. It just didn’t go very well for him. The 19-year-old should have the ball in his hands a lot during his rookie year, and there could be more games like this he figures things out.

On Thursday, the 6-foot-4 Traoré was Brooklyn’s starting point guard, and he used his handle and quickness to apply pressure offensively. With fellow rookies Egor Demin and Ben Saraf capable of serving as on-ball playmakers as well, that competition will be something to watch throughout summer league and the preseason. Traoré finished Thursday’s opener with as many turnovers as assists, but he shot the ball reasonably well. That was an area of concern for the French point guard; showing consistency as a shooter will raise his ceiling considerably.

Traore didn’t have a phenomenal season for Saint-Quentin, but he was able to put his strengths on full display. He averaged 12.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 22.7 minutes per game across 44 appearances. The 19-year-old has decent size at 6’4”, and his quickness and playmaking make him an intriguing prospect. He isn’t a great shooter or defender, but he is one of the better playmaking options in this class. The Nets’ plan is to keep Traore and eventually pair him with Egor Demin in the same backcourt.
