With Darius Garland out, Tomlin enters the Cavs’ opening unit for his second start of the season. The remaining four starters each started Cleveland’s most recent game against the Trail Blazers, which ended in a loss. The Cavaliers have lost four of their last five games and will look to get back on track against the Spurs on Friday.

The Cavaliers won’t have Sam Merrill for Wednesday’s game, as he is out with a hand injury. With Houston having a bigger lineup, Cleveland will do the same, with Tomlin moving into the starting five. The promotion makes him an intriguing deep-league streaming option, but he is not a must-stream player.

Tomlin hasn’t been part of the rotation this season in Cleveland, but after logging 18 minutes in their last game, he played 22 minutes in this one and turned in a strong line. It was his best game of the season, but it wasn’t a career-high; he had 24 points in game 82 last year. This was a fun performance for Tomlin, but it doesn’t mean he should be considered anything more than a dynasty stash.

Due to their contract status, two-way contract recipients are very rarely, if at all, shut down during summer league play. However, the Cavaliers may have to consider something regarding Tomlin, who has been one of the early stars of the NBA 2K26 Summer League. After going off for 30 points on 75 percent shooting in Thursday’s loss to the Pacers, he shot a similar percentage and recorded a double-double with a complete stat line on Saturday. Tomlin is on a two-way deal, but the Cavaliers have a few standard contract slots available. If he can continue to show out in Las Vegas, it’s fair to question if the Cavaliers or another team will look to guarantee Tomlin a standard deal for the 2025-26 season.

Signed to a two-year, two-way contract in March, Tomlin has a lot to prove in Las Vegas. He was excellent in Thursday’s preseason opener, shooting 75 percent from the field and scoring on all three levels. The 6-foot-10 forward faces a difficult fight for a standard contract, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Tomlin ultimately earns that chance. And performances like the one he put forth on Thursday will only help his chances of gaining additional security.
