The Lakers won’t have LeBron James (foot) for Wednesday’s game, opening up a spot in the starting lineup. Vanderbilt will fill the void, and while he doesn’t offer much value offensively, starting may raise his defensive ceiling. The other four starters are unchanged.

While Vanderbilt is still dealing with a sore right leg, he is healthy enough to play. His availability is more critical to the Lakers than to fantasy managers due to his defensive ability.

Vanderbilt is now expected to play after initially being listed as questionable. He’ll occupy his typical role off the bench, where he’ll play a decent amount but won’t be much of a factor for fantasy managers.

Vanderbilt hasn’t been much of a producer in the box score this season, but he was able to have a productive night off the bench in this game. He had his first double-double of the season and set a new season-high for rebounds. It was an excellent performance for him, but this isn’t going to happen often. He averaged 8.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in his two starts in October, and the only time he’ll be worth considering as a streamer is when he’s starting.

Wth Luka Doncic (finger) and Gabe Vincent (ankle) both sidelined, Vanderbilt earned his first start of the season. He played well with the opening unit — he shot with accuracy, was one of the Lakers’ better rebounders on the evening, and was active on the defensive end to accumulate several steals. His stint in the starting unit may not be permanent, but he made a strong impression despite the loss on Monday.

Vanderbilt had a solid first half, so it is disappointing that an injury will end his night early. Vanderbilt will likely be an important reserve for the Lakers this season, so hopefully this is precautionary. More minutes will go to Jake LaRavia if Vanderbilt misses time during the regular season.

Vanderbilt and Vincent have been key rotation players for the Lakers lately. Both reserves have a chance to start against Portland as their stars are resting ahead of the playoffs. Fantasy managers shouldn’t expect gaudy numbers from either player.

Vanderbilt got into a shoving match with Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, which resulted in both players being ejected. Vanderbilt kicked things off with a forceful forearm to the Spurs forward’s back, and Sochan responded by hitting the Lakers forward with the ball. Vanderbilt shoved Sochan, and both players were ejected after the players and officials broke things up. Vanderbilt finished with two points, one rebound, and one assist in 15 minutes.
